The Astavakra lived around 3000 BC , much before Patanjali. Sri Aurobindo is another great master who learnt from Master Lele. Both great masters declared that ‘ the state of relaxation and calm’ is inner state of consciousness for which no effort is required. It is an art of withdrawing the mind from the body and allowing to rest it within. It is like a person moves inside his room when he sees the storm outside. 6 The practice can be done easily by moving one’s awareness and attention within , without any effort at all. But one must learn it under the supervision of a master until one knows how to practice , how to live and how to awaken to inner state. Read for details Turiya rest and relaxation Program

Follows fundamentals of yoga tradition /Free from styles , dogma, belief, cult, religion 2. When I say ‘authentic’ it simply means – nothing related to ‘me’, ‘mine’ but relates to ‘self-discovery’ 3. No opposition to any form but YOGA AS IT IS from tradition 8 4. Yoga is yoga alone, free from styles, cult, dogma, belief. I always talk about the fact that peace, harmony, happiness, wisdom etc. are beyond all religion, belief and cult. Yoga should be taught in freedom for freedom, in peace for awakening to peace and in wisdom for awakening to wisdom. It is 6000 years old tradition , with more than 3000 masters and over 1000 texts. When it was oral tradition ended, many texts were written on a stem or leaves of paper , known as Bhoj Patra (Bhoja –name of a tree and patra meaning leaf). Still India has preserved many manuscripts of yoga. One such image is shown below where master had scribed in Sanskrit language about the importance of Yoga. When I use the word ‘authentic’ , I simply mean following the age old tradition, strictly adhering to fundamentals and teaching yoga as whole ( aims at self-discovery and conscious evolution) and not against any one on this earth 9

Yoga was never a cult, belief, dogma, -ism or religion. Many English dictionaries define yoga as a religious disciple but they are not aware that there was no religion when yoga was discovered, validated, taught and written by great masters. Even masters never cared to claim authorship as after enlightenment , nothing really matters. What yoga IS? Yoga fundamentally is all about Self-discovery, conscious evolution and transformation and 12 ‘knowing thyself’. No master who taught only part of yoga , known as physical yoga was ever considered as great or enlightened master. It is a method, science and tool for Awakening, Realization and Transformation ( ART). It is a method, tool and technology to discover inner peace, calm and happiness. Dr Ben Johnson of Harvard medical school has contributed a lot in understanding the real form of yoga.

Definition by masters • • Emptying the mind of its contents • As Samadhi ( deep meditative states) • As Equanimity of mind ( when mind moves within, reflects the Realself) • 14 Yoga – common definition – union Real Self ? – Consciousness is the self ( REAL-SELF) • No mention – physical practice is yoga but a part of practice ( like car) that leads to goal of yoga ( awakening) • Skill in Action ( consciously integrating Thought, Speech and Action that awakens one to Real-Self) Read explanation in The next slide

Definition by masters The word ‘yoga’ means ‘union’, ‘state of consciousness’ and ‘process’. The famous understanding of yoga is about ‘union’, however, when people talk about union of body, life and mind, it appears as if they are separate and needs to be united. However, the word ‘ union’ is explained as awakening to ‘higher states of consciousness’ or ‘real-self’. It is important to understand the entire philosophy of yoga before we can really know the definition of yoga as explained by different masters in many texts written over a period of 6000 years. There is misunderstanding about yoga where meditation is separated from it. But meditation , physical practices , breath regulation, mudra, Yantra, mantra and many other groups of practices includes ‘yoga’. Any single practice can not termed as yoga practice as it does not confirm to its definition. Only 15 when one practices that aims at unfoldment of one’s inherent and latent potentials leading to awakening , can be said as yoga practice. However, the best way to explain yoga by citing an example of Alchemies who ran out of bath tub when he discovered the principle. He ran out tub just because of joy of discovery. Yoga discovers the ‘self’ that gives one immense joy that never ends in space, time and outer world. it is a joy of conscious living.

There are already enough information available online. But what is striking to me is that Vasistha – great master of Vedic period ( lived almost 4500 years before Patanjali) is not mentioned who taught yoga systematically to Rama. Later another master , Valmiki , wrote his teachings in a book, known as YogaVasistha. later "Yajnavalkya – another master taught yoga who lived more than 3000 years 18 before Patanjali. ( ref: Shatapatha Brahmana (including the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad), besides the Yoga Yajnavalkya and the Yājñavalkya Smṛti) It is not clear if Atri ( master) had three sons namely Duravasa – Dattatreya- Patanjali. But it is clear that Dattatreya who is known as ‘Lord of Yoga and Tantra: started eight fold path of Yoga which was later revised by Patanjali ( codifier of yoga). It can be argued that ‘eight fold path’ of Dattatreya was revised and summarized by Patanjali

Evolve and help others to evolve by Acharya Girish Jha , more details at www.girishjha.org Authentic Yoga Tradition Personal Transformation Program – 10 groups After learning from many masters for more than 26 years, I realized that yoga practice ( commonly known as Sadhana) should include practices for every layers of our existence like physical, mental, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Initially I included 20 groups of practices but later revised and developed program at five levels. These programs were initially known as Veetrag yoga, and now personal transformation program. Personal transformation program – level-1 is much more than physical , meditation or breathing practices. The goal is to help people to discover oneself , awaken to peace, happiness and bring about changes in attitude, personality. It is more than healthy living as it helps in deeper understanding of oneself in relationship to world –outside and inside. 21 The program is very simple, easy to practice and progressive in nature that aims at creativity, harmony , happiness first within one self and later outside.
