GRID 2009 Update

  1. 1. An Update from Northern Ghana 2008-2009 2008-2009 <ul><li>Ghana Rural Integrated Development (GRID) </li></ul>
  2. 2. Women’s Co-ops <ul><li>400 more women were each given: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>peanut seeds </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>a female goat </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>agricultural training and support </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Their average income increased from $20/year to $350/year. </li></ul>

Aquaculture <ul><li>Eleven village fish ponds were fully stocked. </li></ul><ul><li>Six fish ponds were harvested, yielding an average of 1500 lbs. of fish per pond. </li></ul><ul><li>Each fish pond is sustainably managed so that it can continue to provide food for about 300 families. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>A new primary school was constructed. </li></ul><ul><li>A new junior high school was constructed . </li></ul><ul><li>30 students were given scholarships to continue secondary or post-secondary education. </li></ul>Education

Health <ul><li>Over 30,000 people received important health awareness training. </li></ul><ul><li>More women are accessing prenatal, delivery and antenatal care at local clinics. </li></ul><ul><li>6000 patients were seen by a medical mission team, and more than 95 hernia surgeries were conducted </li></ul>
  6. 6. Environmental Protection <ul><li>600 volunteers worked to eliminate the use of chemicals and of illegal nets on the Black Volta River. </li></ul><ul><li>They protected 250 km of the river and 350 km of its tributaries. </li></ul><ul><li>Fish stocks are increasing along the river, and a greater variety of fish are returning. </li></ul>

Peace Building <ul><li>Over 60 chiefs and 120 opinion leaders met regularly to discuss areas of tension and to solve them peacefully. </li></ul><ul><li>Several local disputes have been resolved or are being worked on peacefully . </li></ul><ul><li>Two formerly warring tribes have been peacefully reunited . </li></ul>
  8. 8. Church Growth <ul><li>3 full-time pastors were sent for one year of formal Bible school training . </li></ul><ul><li>2 new churches were constructed for growing congregations. </li></ul><ul><li>Several new congregations were started in villages without a church presence. </li></ul>
