  13. 13. Name _______________________________________________ Date __________________ THE LONG WINTER by Laura Ingalls Wilder Discussion Questions Have you ever heard the expression Laura used, "make hay while the sun shines?" By reading Laura's book, we see the sense in this old saying. Laura truly did make hay while the sun shone. Sometimes you might hear other people use this expression to mean different things. Have you heard other expressions that seem silly but still make sense? Can you name a few? Can you name any ways that you "make hay while the sun shines." Pa was concerned about the winter ahead. Can you name two reasons Pa worried? Pa told Laura the animals knew by instinct a hard winter was coming. Do you remember the examples Pa used? How do we know a hard winter or wet spring are coming? Do you think we can predict the weather now? How do you think the Indian knew about the hard winter ahead? Why did he want to warn the settlers? If you were Pa, would you have believed him? Laura and Carrie were afraid to go to school after the family moved into town. Have you ever been afraid to start a new school or go back the next year? Why were you afraid? How did you learn to enjoy being at school again? Or did you? Once the blizzards began, Laura is sad because she can't go to school until spring. Has this ever happened to you...you dread some situation but after it happens you begin to enjoy yourself and wonder why you were ever afraid? After the blizzards began, the Ingalls family had to make due with what they had to survive. Do you think they did a good job of surviving the winter? Why? Do you think you could have learned to twist hay sticks or grind wheat to make bread? What would you have done differently if you were the Ingalls? The Ingalls family moved to town with the hopes of having all the coal and food they would need for the winter. As long as the trains ran, they expected the stores to be filled with whatever they might need. How do you think they felt when they found out the trains would not run again until spring? Were they frightened? How did Laura feel? Laura tried to stay cheerful to help her family through this difficult time. Do you think this was the right way for Laura to act? Can you think of anything else she might have done to help? Would you have helped your family by learning to twist hay, grind wheat or by singing during hard times? Can you think of a time when you helped your family pull through a crisis? What did you do to help?
  14. 14. Name _______________________________________________ Date __________________ THE LONG WINTER by Laura Ingalls Wilder Discussion Questions, continued Almonzo Wilder built a wall to hide his seed wheat so his brother, Royal, wouldn't sell it. Why was Almonzo so anxious to save his seed wheat? Do you think he was right? Do you think Almonzo would have sold his wheat if he had needed to save the town from starving? Should he? Or not? Do you think it was brave of Almonzo and Cap Garland to go after the wheat to save the town? What would you have done? Do you think Almonzo did it just to save his wheat or to make sure the people in the town had plenty to eat? Was it good that the people in the town decided to divide the wheat so everyone would get a share? Should they have done this or just let whoever could pay Mr. Loftus have the wheat? Why? Why not? Can you think of an example where your school or town has shared or helped one another like this? If one person has enough food to keep a town from starving, should they be fair and share or try to make a profit? Why? Was Mr. Loftus right or wrong to try to sell the wheat for high prices? What would you do if you had the wheat? Laura and her family were excited to see the winter end because it meant the trains could run again. Even though they were independent and self sufficient, the Ingalls' family still depended on the railroad to bring in goods from other places. Can you name some ways that people today are dependent on one another? We don't usually depend on the railroads to bring in groceries or goods but we do count on other forms of transportation. Name some of the ways groceries are brought to our stores and guess what might happen if they had to stop because of bad weather. Could you survive a blizzard? Do you know any safety tips to help if you were outside and a blizzard hit? Thankfully, we do not have as severe weather as Laura experienced, but there are still occasions when people are caught in snowstorms. Would you know what to do? Could you help your family to survive? Name ten ways to protect your family during a storm that cuts off your power, water and heat. Make a list of supplies you should have in your home. When the trains finally did come through, the Ingalls family decided to have Christmas in May. Do you think this was a good idea? Why? Were the Ingalls family happier with this Christmas than one in December? Why? Can you name a special celebration your family had that was out of the ordinary? How did it compare to the Ingalls Christmas in May?
  15. 15. Name _______________________________________________ Date __________________ THE LONG WINTER by Laura Ingalls Wilder Writing Prompt Ideas 1. Pretend you are a reporter covering the "Storm of the Century." Describe the "Long Winter" Laura and her family lived through. Use quotes from the Ingalls, Almonzo Wilder and other townspeople to get their reactions to the blizzards. You might also research how deep snow gets in a blizzard and make a chart of how the worst "storms of the century" compare to Laura's winter. 2. Pretend you lived in DeSmet during the Long Winter. You went to school with the Ingalls girls and played ball with Cap Garland. Write a letter to your grandmother describing the exciting story Cap Garland told you about going to get the seed wheat to save the town. 3. You are a freelance writer for "Prairie Home" magazine. Write a short how to article on how to survive a long winter. Give tips for twisting hay, grinding wheat or making a button lamp. 4. Imagine you lived through the "Long Winter." Your grandchildren want to hear a story of the "good old days." Write down the memories you have about that winter for your grandchildren. You can invent a character or pretend to be one of the characters from the book. 5. You live in the East and have heard about the heroism of Almonzo Wilder and Cap Garland. Write a speech to give to them as you present them with a special "Medal of Heroic Behavior." Remember to explain how they saved the town from starvation.
