The Egg Tree Guided Reading

  1. 1. A Book Unit for...
  2. 2. Title: The Egg Tree Caldecott Year: 1951 Author: Katherine Milhous Illustrator: Katherine Milhous CONTENTS • A GUIDED READING page to be used before reading the book. This page is for teacher reference. • A GUIDED READING page to be used after reading the book. This page is for teacher reference and concerns both the plot of the story and the artwork. • A JOURNAL RESPONSES page for recording answers to questions during the reading. This page should go in the students reading notebooks (or other appropriate organizational tool). These questions should be discussed and the answers briefly noted on the lines OR the answers can be written by students while the book is being read, and then the answers can be discussed when the book is finished. • A JOURNAL RESPONSES page for recording students own questions. This page should go in the students reading notebooks. There should be questions that students have during the reading, and questions after the reading as well. The during reading questions will help students develop skills of inference and prediction. Students should be given the opportunity to write their questions during appropriate pauses in the reading. The after reading questions may be questions to clarify points the students did not understand, with factual answers, or they may be questions with which students travel beyond what they ve read. In both cases, it is good to spend some class time discussing these questions and their answers. • Two JOURNAL RESPONSES pages of art prompts.
  3. 3. Title: The Egg Tree Caldecott Year: 1951 Author: Katherine Milhous Illustrator: Katherine Milhous GUIDED READING Pre-reading questions These questions should be discussed in class before the book is read. What do you think this book will be about? What pictures make you think so? Have you ever decorated Easter eggs? What are some of the ways you can decorate Easter eggs? What are some other things associated with Easter? What holiday traditions does your family celebrate? Talk about a party you have thrown. Who was it for? What was the occasion? What are some signs that winter is over and spring is coming? Have you ever been in an attic? Does your house have an attic? What sorts of things do people keep in attics, usually? Judge a book by its cover These questions should be discussed in class while looking at the cover. What is the title of the book? Who is the author? Are the author and the illustrator the same person? Is this book about nowadays, or the future, or a long time ago? Why do you think so? What do you think this book will be about? What clues in the title or the cover picture make you think that? What kind of pictures will be in this book? Are they colorful or black- and-white? Do you know how these pictures were made?
  4. 4. Title: The Egg Tree Caldecott Year: 1951 Author: Katherine Milhous Illustrator: Katherine Milhous GUIDED READING After reading: These questions should be discussed in class after the book is read. How did Katy and Carl know the Easter rabbit hadn t come yet? What did Carl suggest Katy do to call for the Easter rabbit? Why did Katy decide to look for eggs up in the attic? What are some of the things she found in the attic? Describe how the children decorated eggs. What were the names of their designs? Why did the children decide to decorate a tree with Easter eggs? What were some of the other decorations on the tree? Do you think this story could be true? Do you think the title of this story was a good choice? About the art: These questions should be discussed in class while looking at the book, after the book is read. Some of the pictures in this book cover two pages. How are these pictures different from the ones that just cover one page? There are no words on the two-page pictures. How do those pictures tell you what is happening in the story? Do you think these drawings were done recently, or many years ago? How can you tell? What do you think about this style of art? Did this art go with the story? Which picture was your favorite?
