  2. 2. © Creaons by LAckert Name: _____________________________________________________ May 1st: May Day In many countries throughout the world, May Day is a day for welcoming spring. The tradition of a Maypole dates back well over 400 years. In some countries, May Day is a time for recognizing workers. In some of those countries, it is also seen as a socialist or even communist holiday. How is May Day celebrated where you live? If it is not celebrated in your town, how would you like to see it celebrated? Describe the celebration plans if you were the person in charge of planning!
  3. 3. © Creaons by LAckert Name: _____________________________________________________ May 2nd: National Tourism Week To commemorate National Tourism Week, you have been assigned the task to develop a tour of your community for visitors. What places would you highlight on the tour? Why? What would you want visitors to know about each place?
  4. 4. © Creaons by LAckert Name: _____________________________________________________ May 3rd: Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby is held on the 1st Saturday of every May. What do you know about the derby? How do people dress for the derby? Why do you believe the derby is such a big event? Would you like to go to the derby? Why or why not?
  5. 5. © Creaons by LAckert Name: _____________________________________________________ May 4th: 4 students killed at Kent State In 1970, many students were protesting the Vietnam War at their university in Kent, Ohio. The campus banned the rallies, which tended to get out of control. The National Guard was even called into to break up the protests. Despite the ban, and the presence of the National Guard, 2000 people gathered at Kent State to protest the war. The National Guard ordered them to disperse. The students teased the Guards, and some threw rocks. The National Guard fired into the crowd, killing four students, and wounding several others. In your opinion, were the students wrong to protest? Were they wrong to throw rocks? Were the National Guardsmen wrong to fire into the crowd? Should the people who participated in this event have done things differently, and if so, how do you think they should have done them?
  6. 6. © Creaons by LAckert Name: _____________________________________________________ May 5th: Cinco de Mayo What do you know about Cinco de Mayo? Learn something about this historic day and write about it here.
  7. 7. © Creaons by LAckert Name: _____________________________________________________ May 6th: National Nurses Day There are over 2.5 million Registered Nurses in the United States. When was the last time you saw a nurse? Were you or someone else sick at the time? Do you personally know someone that is a nurse? Would you ever consider becoming a nurse? Why or why not?
  8. 8. © Creaons by LAckert Name: _____________________________________________________ May 7th: National Water Safety Month Why is water safety important? Why do you believe that National Water Safety Month is scheduled for May and not November? What do you know about water safety? What would you like to learn about it?
