  1. Insects Insects are part of the Animal Kingdom. All insects must have 4 things to be an insect: Name _______________________________________ Ladybug Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly
  2. 1. All insects have 3 body parts: a head, a thorax and an abdomen. 2. All insects have 6 jointed legs. Grasshopper head thorax abdomen 1 2 3 4 5 6 Stag Beetle
  3. 3. All insects have 2 antennae to sense the world around them. 4. All insects have a hard skeleton on the outside of their bodies called an exoskeleton. Praying Mantis Rhinoceros Beetle exoskeleton antennae
  4. Spiders are not insects, because they have eight legs. Centipedes also have too many legs to be insects. Some insects have wings. They can have one pair or two pairs of wings. Spider Centipede NOT INSECTS Hornet 1 pair of wingsDragonfly 2 pairs of wings
  5. There are more than a million different kinds of insects on the earth! Most insects are helpful to humans. For example, they make honey, silk, and wax. They clean up dead plants and animals. They are food for other animals. Bulldog Ant Monarch Butterfly
