Technology Use <ul><li>Definition: Using technology as a form of multi-media within the classroom </li></ul><ul><li>Students are using technology when they watch an informational video on a projector, or when the teachers uses an overhead projector to present a lesson </li></ul><ul><li>While Technology is being “used” in the examples listed above, it is not actively being used to improve student understanding </li></ul><ul><li>This is DIFFERENT than Technology Integration </li></ul>
  3. 3. Technology Integration <ul><li>Definition : Effective use of technology by students and teachers that helps to support instruction and motivate learners </li></ul><ul><li>Technology Integration adds to student learning </li></ul>

Purpose of Technology Integration <ul><li>Creates a rich environment where student work shows evidence of conceptual understanding beyond recall </li></ul><ul><li>Encourages students to engage in activities that develop understanding and create personal meaning through reflection </li></ul><ul><li>Provides opportunities for students to apply knowledge in real world contexts </li></ul><ul><li>Incorporates technology to engage in active participation, exploration, and research </li></ul>

Examples of Technology Integration In The Classroom <ul><li>Having students use a video camera to record their own weather predictions video during a lesson on weather </li></ul><ul><li>Using the computer to take a virtual tour of a museum or national park for a social studies lesson </li></ul><ul><li>Having students use the internet to create their own web pages through Google pages to share information with others…this can be done for any subject </li></ul><ul><li>Other Examples: Digital Cameras, Interactive Whiteboards, Webcams, Google Earth/Sky, Blogs, Instant Messaging, Clickers, etc. </li></ul>

It Is Important To Remember… <ul><li>Technology Use & Technology Integration ARE different </li></ul><ul><li>While technology use does not involve students interacting with the technology in order to better their understanding, technology integration IS an interactive way for students to become actively involved in their learning! </li></ul>
