Clicking the “on campus” link will get you to this page. To access the literary criticism databases, click “Literary Criticism”.
From here you can choose between the two literary databases (GaleNet and LION) that the ECC library subscribes to. Just click on the database you wish to use.
If you are working from off campus, clicking the MYECC link will get you here, and you will have to enter your USERNAME and PASSWORD to continue. Help is available.
Once you are into the MYECC page your screen will look similar to this. Find and click on LIBRARY DATABASES
All of the databases will be displayed. Click on GaleNet or LION to access the literary criticism databases
GALE Literary Database: Defaults to searching all three collections, but you can select only one if you wish. Search by Author, Title, etc. separately, or in combination. Use the bottom “Full Text” box to search for words within the text of the article. For instance, here I am searching for change within essays on “The Old Man and the Sea”.
The results page for my search on Hemingway/Old Man and the Sea/ and change. Note that the results give you the author, title of article, title of original source, plus the name of the database the essay is from and the type of information you will get from this essay. Click on the essay to get the full text.
Full text display. See the MLA citation handout for advice and help on how to cite these articles correctly. Note that for the GALE product there is no option to email the full text article home. You will have to use the product from home, or copy and paste the article into another email program and send it that way. Other options are to print a copy using your print card, or save the essay to your flash drive.
LITERATURE Online (lion) Database: You can do a quick search from the box provided (advised), or you can click an option to search by Author, Title, etc. Other search option, like Author Indexes, exist. And there is a useful tutorial here.
View 1 of the Results screen for a search on Hemingway. Clicking the Author result will get you again to all of the options available.
View 2 of the Results screen showing other material on Hemingway from Reference works, plus web site addresses that specialize in Hemingway. Again, just clicking on the Author results in the previous view will get you to all of these options on one screen.
A view of the Author screen selection. As you can see, all of the options are still available to you – the Reference Works, the Criticism (Articles) and the web sites.
A full text selection. From this screen you can choose to print, save, or email the text.
When looking at articles from the Author page selection, you just have access to a list of articles on the author. For a more specific article search you may prefer to choose the Criticism link - then you can craft a detailed search. Note that you can truncate search terms to pick up variants of the word
The search resulted in 2 results, both full text, that can now be clicked on and read and saved/printed/emailed. Abstract, Full Text, Contains pictures For Additional Help, Please visit the Library Reference Desk.
