  • smattering of results from research about all of these web sites -- though mostly photobucket, myspace, flickr, facebook, twitter plus the snapfish shutterfly kodakgallery trio. PLUS 5 people who participated in the research are here to talk about what’s useful and confusing about photo sharing and social networking
  • A few clips to set the tone and then I’ll introduce the panelists -- In this first clip, Susan is logging out of Flickr and describing why she loves Kaboodle
  • Allison just started using Twitter a couple days (before this video) and she likes it. She found some friends, which helped -- a dozen other people tried out Twitter but couldn’t find or convince friends to use it.
  • Kathleen just started using Facebook and was impressed with the Photo application
  • Jeff is brand new to Facebook and wants to know where to find out what’s going on
  • Megan tried out a lot of photo sharing web sites as a part of this project and liked Zoto the least
  • Allison wants to find people on Twitter but “Find and Follow” doesn’t find
  • JP uses a sea of social networking sites everyday to interact and share. He tried out socialthing and friendfeed and pownce as a part of this project. What do you like best about all these sites?
  • Megan tried out zoto and “shutterfly collections” as a part of this research project and she shares photos on multiple web sites - tell us a bit about why have you used so many diff photo sites? have you found a good place to share pics with the amount of privacy+access that you want?
  • Susan photographs most of the events with her friends and shares photos online in a bunch of places, mostly Flickr - she tried out photobucket as a part of this project and discovered Ning. What do you particularly love about Flickr? She’s also looking for a way to collaborate with a group of interior designers online - maybe with a wiki? What have you found that works so far?
  • Victor uses email and IM to communicate with famiy and friends. He tried out picasa and flickr and facebook as a part of this project. He started using facebook in March -- how has it changed your online relationships with your kids?
  • Becky keeps flickr, facebook and twitter open in browser tabs all day long and she blogs using wordpress. She also uses myspace and snapfish but hates them -- why do you hate them and why do you keep using them?
  • Becky - Facebook events creation, clunky & can’t repeat events; Flickr too many choices
JP, Becky, Victor, Susan - Facebook applications - any experiences having to spam friends in order to use them?
  • Megan - there’s a site you use that doesn’t require login now? (KG)
No way to get all photos back; hard to remember where photos are; sometimes the login isn’t language-friendly for my relatives in south america
Susan - signed up for Ning? have to create new profile all over again
Becky - maintain diff username/passwords because separate rules

  • Almost all age groups in U.S. are using email and/or IM now as well as some photo sharing, but is social networking only for the young?
Victor comments while looking at his friend updates ... all Facebook friends are much younger
Becky - can’t get family to join
Twitter/Pownce -- can’t get friends to sign up and use it with me
  • Khan comments about what he thought after he setup profile on Facebook
Stewart - I’m not sure what this site does for me.
Twitter; friendfeed; facebook homepage, there’s no clear direction re what to do next for newbie -- once again, too many choices and no recommendation. good for the tech savvy but what about the newbie?
  • Allison - loves Flickr but still can’t always find her way around
Photobucket - easy to navigate forward, hard to find way back - similar in Flickr
Flickr - can’t get directly from Organize to Contacts
  • Katie is lead singer in a band and wanted to create a page on Facebook for her band - similar to the page she has on MySpace for her band.
Facebook pages - how to create one? (Becky)

  • Twitter & MySpace have simple privacy options - Flickr options for who can see what
Facebook privacy set in three places -- account, edit profile, privacy -- AND not enormously public
MySpace is sometimes not private enough and not public enough -- can only be mostly all public or mostly all private
Karima couldn’t figure out how to set profile to private on MySpace so just removed info
Becky - how to give temporary full access to photos?
Megan - how to share with just family without requiring login and still keeping private?
  • I feel connected .... Victor/kids/son/IM/Facebook
Ron loves Hi5. Magdalena likes to share herself. Alec says MS is good for keeping in touch. Flickr is good for checking in with friends. Becky keeps tabs open all day.
My friends are here - it suits my needs. Made new friends, reconnect with old friends.
Kathleen - easy to search for people
  • Ron using Hi5 - keeps music in background, constantly using iLike (who claims they are the #1 driver of sales to iTunes)
Katie, seen earlier, says fans use myspace more than her band web site
Mattea - myspace finds new bands and i don’t have to download (FB) apps
  • Photobucket - for getting links for MySpace, Craigslist ads, etc
How do you all keep track of where you photos are? Are they all in one place?
