  • Don’t dress the dolls as biker chicks or strippers! Also large volume dresses are difficult to pack, it can be done but try to make them fit in a box slightly larger than a shoe box.

    • 2. 06/24/11 Detroit Goodfellows
      • The Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit is a charity founded in 1914 by James J. Brady.
      • The organization includes 300 members whose sole mission is to ensure that there is “No Kiddie without a Christmas.”
      • Each holiday season the Detroit Goodfellows distribute holiday gift boxes to children ages four through 13 living in Detroit, Highland Park, River Rouge and Hamtramck.
      • Each child receives warm clothing, toys, books, games and candy .
    • 3. 06/24/11 The Detroit Goodfellows will dress and distribute 12,000 dolls for the 2011 holiday season.
    • 4. 06/24/11 Guidelines for Dressing Dolls
      • Bridal
      • Wedding dress made from regular materials, either crocheted or knitted, may be finished off with garter, veil/hat, slip or flowers tied to the hand
      • Fancy Dress
      • Elaborate outfit in regular materials, either crocheted or knitted, may have beads, fur, sequins, lace, etc. (must sewn to material)
      • Careers
      • Professional attire: i.e. judge, doctor, nurse, police officer, etc.
      • Look-a-like
      • A child’s outfit and doll outfit made from same material (exactly alike)
      • Character
      • Clown, Raggedy Ann, Heidi, Mother Hubbard, nursery rhyme, etc.

      • Nationality
      • Doll representing an ethnic group and/or country
      • Sport
      • Hockey player, ice skater, roller skater, jogger, skier, cheerleader, etc.
      • Crocheted

    • 7. Additional Information
      • All dolls must have underpants. The staff will turn each doll upside down to check.
      • No tattoos
      • No hair dye or hair extensions
      • The dolls submitted city-wide are judged the week before Thanksgiving and are on display at the Compuware building in downtown Detroit until the Monday after Thanksgiving. We may plan a “field trip” to see the dolls in November. . .
    • 8. Store-bought patterns are available. . .The dolls wear a size “small”. . . 11” – 12” You can buy a pattern when Joann’s has a sale. Recently Simplicity patterns were on sale for 99 cents, McCalls at $1.00. There are also other patterns available at the desk you can borrow.

    • 10. Don’t Sew?
      • You can buy a ready-made dress from several websites and a local store.

      • Sew What Goodfellows Doll group designed a good-fitting pattern for the Goodfellows dresses
      • There is a copy available at the desk in case you would like to use it. Just make a copy for yourself.

    • 17. 06/24/11 All Dolled Up – The 3rd Sat. 1 – 3:30pm, A group will be working on doll clothes for Goodfellow Dolls . Carol will provide patterns for the clothes, we will have some scrap fabrics here or you can pull from your stash. You can work on clothes here or take patterns home. Our goal was to dress 60 but we turned in 154. Can we top that for next Christmas?       • June 23 - Orientation and Doll distribution
      • June, July, August, September - Work on making doll clothes and/or buying outfits
      • September 9- Turn in your dressed dolls
      • September 10 - Doll display and selection of the best dressed Bridgewater doll
      • September 12 –dolls prepared for shipment (volunteers greatly appreciated for this task!) to the Goodfellows warehouse in Detroit and distribution to 60 lucky little girls in time for Christmas 2011!
    • 21. She may not be featured in fashion magazines, but she still is decked out in fine style. She’s the “India princess” doll, as named by three student judges, who gave her top honors in the city-wide Best-Dressed Goodfellows Doll Contest on Nov. 22 at the Compuware Art Gallery. For the second year in a row, a Goodfellows doll dressed by a Compuware employee won first place honors in the contest. The company has been a long- time financial supporter of the Goodfellows Contest, and has displayed the dolls in the final competition since 2003. This year’s Compuware beauty was selected out of 150 finalists from 12,000 dolls, which will be distributed for Christmas to girls ages 4-10 from low-income families in Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck and River Rouge.
