  • The Golden Ball
  • The Golden Ball , referred to as the European Footballer of the Year award, is an annual association football award. It is presented to the player who has been considered to have performed the best over the previous calendar year. The award was conceived by France Footballs 's chief magazine writer Gabriel Hanot , who asked his colleagues to vote for the player of the year in Europe in 1956. The inaugural winner was Stanley Matthews of Blackpool.

Widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the modern era, he was the recipient of the prestigious Ballon d'Or , the first Czech player since the break up of Czechoslovakia, in 2003 while at Juventus. He is known for his energy and tireless runs as well as his goal scoring ability.

Shevchenko's career has been highlighted by many awards, the most prestigious of which were the Ballon d'Or in 2004 (becoming the third Ukrainian, after Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov to receive it) and the UEFA Champions League in 2003 with Milan . Along with this, he has won various league and cup titles in Ukraine , Italy , and England . Besides the Golden Ball, Shevchenko was awarded other individual awards.

Ronaldo simply went by his first name upon his move to Europe, thereby allowing Ronaldinho to drop the "Gaúcho" and remain simply as Ronaldinho.

In addition to his contributions on the pitch, Kaká is known for his humanitarian work.

His contract with Real Madrid is believed to have made him the highest-paid football player in the world.
  • 2009 Lionel Andrés Messi born 24 June 1987 is an Argentine footballer who currently plays for La Liga team Barcelona and the Argentine national team . Messi is considered to be one of the best football players of his generation, having received several Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21. His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to football legend Diego Maradona , who himself declared Messi his "successor".
