IPC have three
publishing
divisions:
•IPC Connect
•IPC Inspire
•IPC Southbank

NME is published by IPC Media. NME is the longest published
and most respected music weekly in the world. IPS is the UK’s
leading consumer magazine publisher and IPC works in
partnership with its consumers, advertisers and business
partners, to deliver innovation and creativity. IPC has award
winning portfolio websites and they reach over 25 million users
each year.
Within IPC, there are three publishing divisions, these include:
•IPC Connect
•IPC Inspire
•IPC Southbank
NME is published by IPC inspire. IPC inspire has a wealth of
leisure brands, as well as lifestyle brands such as NME. NME is
a unique media platform as it reaches over 1 million music fans
every week. Every month NME celebrates all that is new and
old in rock and film.
Ideology

NME is a music magazine, also known an New Musical
Express.
The magazine is mainly a pop/rock magazine, which can
be recognised by just looking at the cover of one of the
NME magazines.
NME focuses on artists that were big in the past and
allows people to see to what extent there groups or artists
were actually successful in the past.
NME is now one of the world's biggest standalone music
site, with over 7 million users per month and up to 25
million per year.
Audience
NME’s main target audience is teenage boys. However, some teenage girls may be interested in the
magazine, depending on what genre of music appeals to them and what they are most interested in.

IPC, describes NME of having a male target audience. Another aspect of the magazine cover that makes
teenagers interested in the magazine is that it is mainly focused on today’s music.
Also, because they have artists and groups from the past in the magazine, will make people interested
because teenagers won’t really know much about groups and artists from the past and how successful
they were. The front cover also suggests that the magazine is aimed at most people who are really
interested in rock groups.

However, not all teenagers will enjoy reading this as they might not be interested in this music genre.
The IPC website states “NME.COM is the world's biggest standalone music site serving an intensely
engaged audience of 16-24 year-olds.”
Representation
The magazine front cover is represented as a rock
magazine and follows the codes and conventions of all
magazine covers.
The main image is the most important and stands out the
most and you can see that the main image is the main
focus of the page and is what attracts the audience to buy
it because if the image doesn’t attract them or it isn’t
someone they like then they aren’t going to be interested.
The arctic monkeys all have very serious faces.
This is also the only image on the front cover of the
magazine, which shows how important it is because you
normally expect there to be more than one image on the
cover.

Bauer media group is Britain's largest privately owned publishing group. The Group is a worldwide media empire
and they offer over 300 magazines in 15 countries. Bauer Media is a multi-platform UK-based media Group which
consist of many companies collected around two main divisions , these are Magazines and Radio and they are
widely recognised innovators.
‘Kerrang!’ is published by bauer media group. Kerrang ensures that the bauer media group are making the
magazines to appeal to the spectrum of readers that read the magazine.
Bauer media group say “Each issue will include a balance of bands and scenes to guarantee that we’re providing
for our readers’ need for variety and their passionate appetite for their favourite bands as well as their desire to be
introduced to new music within our world.”
They always ensure that everything they produce is suitable for their target audience. They always focus on the
biggest things that are happening in the world each week.
Bauer Media currently spans over 80 influential brand names.
Ideology
Kerrang is a music magazine.
Everything Kerrang publish, they aim to make it suitable for
their target audience.
Their magazines are devoted to rock music. Which can be
recognised by just looking at the cover of one of the kerrang
magazines.
The text of the title is bold and very outgoing which
represents rock music and will help the audience to recognise
that it is a rock magazine.
All of the colours used are very dark (black, dark green)
colours and this is what Kerrangs message is, everything they
do they want it to be based on their target audience;
therefore, the theme of the magazine is going to have to
match their target audience.
Audience
From looking at the front cover of the magazine, I can assume that the magazine I aimed at teenage boys who
are interested in rock music.
I can assume that this magazine has predominately male readers because of the text and colours used on the
front of the magazine, it is a very outgoing ‘in your face magazine’ they want to catch the reader’s attention.
From doing research about Kerrangs target audience, I found out that the target audience of Kerrang is:
•Male- 66.2%
•Female: 33.8%
•Target Age: Between 15-45
The age range of their target audience is very big compared to a lot of other magazines, as you can tell by
looking at their front cover, it isn’t just aimed at teenagers, it is also aimed at middle aged people, which is why
their mission is to ensure that their magazine suits their whole target audience and makes them want to read it.
Representation
The magazine front cover is represented as a rock magazine
and follows the codes and conventions of all magazine
covers.
The main image is the most important and stands out the
most and you can see that the main image is the main focus
of the page and is what attracts the audience to buy it
because if the image doesn’t attract them or it isn’t someone
they like then they aren’t going to be interested.
They have also used a popular well knows band on the front
of the magazine because they want it to stand out and
attract people, they want this to be the main focus of their
magazine.

You me at six are also wearing all black clothing which makes
them stand out from the rest of the page and they are
wearing the darkest colours so the focus is on them. What
they are wearing also fits in with the ‘rock’ magazine.
Also, the rest of the images on the page represent rock
because none on the people in them look very happy, they
are very serious, which is what most people are like when
they play rock music.

Institution
Billboard is published by Prometheus Global Media. Billboard
is music’s most powerful brand. Prometheus Global media is
an American entertainment publishing company based in
New York City. Prometheus Global media, doesn’t just
publish music, such as billboard but the company also
consists of Entertainment (The Hollywood Reporter,
Backstage, ShowEast, Cineasia, and CineEurope). They also
advertise, and aim to engage and empower content and
deliver it across a multimedia platform. The company was
formed by the sale of the entertainment and media division
of Nielsen Business Media in December 2009. Billboard is
published by Tommy Page who works with billboard.
Ideology

Billboard is the world's most influential music media brand reaching
key executives and tastemakers in and around the music business
through Billboard Magazine and billboard websites. The Billboard
brand is built on its exclusive charts and allows people to see that
latest issues and trends across all genres of music. Billboard receives
hundreds of millions of brand impressions daily through many
companies across various industries. magazine front cover fits with
the typical conventions of a magazine front cover, including a
headline, cover lines etc. The magazine aims to encourage people to
get up to date with all of the latest music and trends in the music
industry. Billboard has well known artists on the front of their
magazines, whereas a company like NME has new, fairly unknown
artists on there cover, which many people wouldn’t really know. This
particular magazine cover features Katy Perry as she is very well
known in England as well as in America, they like to stick to artists that
many people will be aware of and will have an interest in reading the
magazine.
Audience
•The target audience of a billboard magazine
ranges from young teens to people aged 26. This is
due to the fact that billboard don’t just base their
magazine on one particular genre of music,
allowing them to open up their magazine to a wider
target audience and age range.
• This is also represented through the layout of the
cover on the magazine as it is not overcrowded
with images.
• Billboard are mainly about covering the latest
trends in and around pop culture.
• The magazine reaches It recently reached
approximately 16,327 people.
•The magazine usually costs £5.50, which also
supports the age range for Billboards target
audience.
Representation
Every aspect on the front cover of this magazine represents
it as a music magazine. They have also used a popular well
knows artist on the front of the magazine because they
want it to stand out and attract people, they want this to
be the main focus of their magazine.
The main image on the front of the magazine connotes that
she is the main focus of the magazine because she stands
out from everything else on the page and she is wearing
darker colours compared to the rest of the page.
The main colours featured in the magazine are:
•Pink
•Black
•White
•Yellow
The artist on the cover looks directly at the audience
making them look at her and because she is a popular artist,
this is used to catch the readers attention, which also
explains why her name is one of the biggest fonts on the
page.

The main image is the most important and stands out the most and you can see that the main image is the main focus of the page and is what attracts the audience to buy it because if the image doesn’t attract them or it isn’t someone they like then they aren’t going to be interested. They have also used a popular well knows band on the front of the magazine because they want it to stand out and attract people, they want this to be the main focus of their magazine. You me at six are also wearing all black clothing which makes them stand out from the rest of the page and they are wearing the darkest colours so the focus is on them. What they are wearing also fits in with the ‘rock’ magazine. Also, the rest of the images on the page represent rock because none on the people in them look very happy, they are very serious, which is what most people are like when they play rock music.
