  • 1. Evaluation Part 6 what have you learnt abouttechnologies from the process of constructing this product?
  • 2. Introduction Through the course of AS Media Studies and through the process ofconstructing this piece as well as my preliminary task I have learnt a great deal about technology, the use of it, how it’s developed and how to use equipment I had never laid eyes on before the course.
  • 3. Learning and UnderstandingI had already learnt briefly about the use of a camera within the media, how it is used in specific ways to create certain meanings andatmospheres from still shots from cameras used in adverts from themovements of the camera used within the filming industry which is what Ihave been focusing a lot more on through the course of this year so far.My understanding of technical terminology created through technologyhas grown significantly over the past few months through this course andthis has been assisted by the experience I have had actually getting togrips and using equipment in ways I couldn’t before the year had started.
  • 4. ExperimentingBy filming little scenes with my group and constructing my preliminarytask, this has helped me immensely when creating my final piece. Throughthe lecturing of our teachers and the ability to use the camera equipmentwe were able to have a much more active learning experience by putting inwhat we’d learnt into practice using a Sony camcorder. I feel much moreaware of the importance and creation of specific shots, zoom andmovements in the Media industry and is what has helped me to developmy skills to interpret them into the final piece of filming which was thefilm opening clip.
  • 5. ExperimentingI found out by experiencing and practicing with the camcorder that therewere strengths with using the tripod when filming as it made the piecelook significantly more professional as it was steadier than handheld. Thishelped me and my group when filming the final task as we will mostprobably get a higher mark for using the tripod creating steady movementrather than shaky which looked amateurish.During our first experiences with the camcorder, we found the sound wasextremely faint and lacked volume compared to when we used amicrophone. This was a lesson well learnt as it has improved the quality ofour final piece and I would never have used a microphone before the startof the year.
  • 6. Problems With TechnologyWe also learnt that some of the shots drawn in our storyboard wereharder to produce than once anticipated as the high angle shot in thebathroom of the Goth character putting on bracelets was hard to executedue to a wall which ended up with one of my fellow team members sittingupon a window seal determined to get the shot.
  • 7. AnalysingNearer the start of the course when learning about camera shots, anglesand movements I completed various tasks to challenge myself such asanalysing various clips of programmes and films such as The Hustle andDr. Who in order to progress my learning further to make sure I fullyunderstood the meanings and importance of these terms in order formyself to be able to recreate them easily with more understanding. Theseexamples of analysis are all available on my blog.
  • 8. LearningAll of the technology we have faced and used during this course hashelped to build our knowledge from the simplest of learning about camerashots, movements and continuity to the practical work testing whatworked best for our film opening as without trying there is no knowing.Altogether, the tripod, camcorder and microphone have all helped toimprove the quality of our film opening; I believe that knowing about howto use them was even more important.
  • 9. Editing TechnologyTo edit all of our captured footage we used free software called PremierePro which we learnt how to use at the start of the year. We learnt theentire basics from shortening, removing parts as well as great affects andtransitions available to make the piece much more exhilarating for theaudience, to keep them interested. After playing around with Premiere Proa few times, I eventually got to grips with it and found editing my finalpiece with my group a whole lot easier as we developed new and existingskills on the program.
  • 10. Overall… Overall I feel as if I have fully engaged with the course in learning about the various types of technology and techniques used within the mediaindustry letting me to use technology on a much higher level that I haven’t done before allowing me to progress and use it in an effective and successful manner in order to gain the best possible grade I am able to when I constructed my final product. I believe I have a much better understanding in the media world and the importance of technology and how you use it in the correct way to create a certain meaning or atmosphere and I believe that I have been able to develop my skills immensely helping me in the long-run when I created the final piece.
