Solr does great filtering and faceting, but often your documents are not flat at all and have some kind of structure i.e. items or sub-documents. Ignoring their identity leads to poor navigation experience. Lucene can model such sub-documents via its intrinsic abilities: TermPositions and SpanQueries.
