  • EARLY HISTORY OF SPACECRAFT
  • People have always wondered what is it like outside in space …
  • ... But we have never been there until last century .
  • FIRST SATELLITES
  • Sputnik I , the first artificial satellite launched from USSR , exited Earth’s orbit on October 4 th , 1957 .
  • Can you imagine? Sputnik I was about the size of a beach ball !
  • Shortly after Sputnik I, people had sent other satellites to space.
  • ANIIMALS IN SPACE
  • After the first satellites, the first living creatures were sent to space!
  • WHO?
  • All dogs in space were sent from USSR
  • In total, there were 13 dogs in space.
  • The first dog in space was called LAIKA .
  • Unfortunately, Laika died during the flight of over heat.
  • All the monkeys and chimps were sent from USA .
  • The first monkey in space was named ABLE .
  • FIRST PEOPLE IN SPACE
  • On 12 April 1961 , YURY GAGARIN became the 1 st man in space .
  • Neil Armstrong was the 1 st man that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969
  • SHUTTLES AND BURANS
  • Shuttle is a spacecraft built by NASA.
  • There are 6 Shuttles: Enterprise , Columbia , Challenger , Discovery , Atlantis and Endeavor .
  • Columbia was the 1 st space shuttle to be launched into space on April 12 th , 1981
  • Christa McAuliffe was supposed to be the 1 st civilian in space and leave into space on Challenger , January 28, 1986
  • Challenger exploded due to some technical problems, killing all the members of the crew .
  • Buran was the Soviet spacecraft, similar to Shuttles, but not indentical.
  • Buran made only 1 flight on autopilot . Due to financial problems, it was never launched again .
