The Iroquois in the 17 th and 18 th centuries <ul><li>Believed in: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A life where each person is given the gift of body with the choice to care for it and use it with respect </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A world where people live in harmony with nature </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>People in groups providing mutual support. Alone, a person could not survive </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Communal ownership of land and resources </li></ul></ul>
  5. 5. Imposition of European Ideology <ul><li>As more people immigrated from Europe, Native leaders looked for ways to live them. </li></ul><ul><li>Eventually treaties were signed with governments which grant security for the native populations </li></ul>
  6. 6. Ethnocentrism? <ul><li>Europeans soon ignored these treaties or refused to treat the First Nations as sovereign states. </li></ul><ul><li>The first peoples of North America were now subjects of European masters. </li></ul>
