Why Firefox Why Firefox Presentation Transcript

  • Why firefox?
    Add-ons and more
    LeAnn Suchy, Metronet
    leann@metronet.lib.mn.us
  • www.mozilla.com/firefox
Works best with web 2.0 tools
    Customizable
    More secure than IE
  • This is a customizable search box in the Firefox browser.
  • There are currently almost 800 different search engines you can add.
Some come automatically – Google, Wikipedia, Creative Commons, etc.
  • I recommend adding:
    Google Scholar
    Internet Archive
    Webster
    YouTube
    Amazon
    Shmoop
    IMDB
    Delicious
    Twitter
  • To search for more to add, click on “Manage Search Engines…” and then…
click on “Get more search engines…”
  • Add-ons: More than search engines
Over 5,000 Add-ons can interact with your browser
Almost anything you’d want your browser can do can be done with an Add-on*
*they can’t actually do your work, sorry

  • FireShot

  • TwitterBar
Have something to share on Twitter but don’t want to go into Twitter to share it?
  • Scrapbook
Want to take a snippet of a website and save it? And even add highlights and notes? Miss Google Notebook?
  • Zotero
    Free bibliographic manager
  • Adblock Plus
Sick of all the ads on the Internet? Don’t want to see them?
  • ScribeFire Blog Editor

  • Colorful Tabs
Make tabs easier to see by adding some color
  • Overall: Makes life easier
Add-ons take some initial investment (finding them, learning how to use them), but will save time in the long run.
    More suggested Add-ons:
    PC Mag’s Best Firefox Add-ons
    Add-ons for the Reference Desk
    Lifehacker’s Must-Have Add-ons
