In 2008, U.S. health care spending was about $7,681 per resident and accounted for 16.2% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP); this is among the highest of all industrialized countries. Since 1999, family premiums for employer-sponsored health coverage have increased by 131 percent, placing increasing cost burdens on employers and workers. With workers’ wages growing at a much slower pace than health care costs, many face difficulty in affording out-of-pocket spending. One-third of adults (31 percent) and more than half of all children (54 percent) do not have a primary care doctor 46.6 million Americans, (15.9 percent) were uninsured in 2005. It is estimated that at least 7% of health care expenditures are for administrative costs The United States ranked among the bottom of industrialized countries on healthy life expectancy at age 60. Close to 100,000 Americans die annually from medical errors -- more than double the number of Americans who die annually in car crashes.
