Guide to Mapmaking <ul><li>Maps help us to learn where places are, how far they are from each other, and what we can find there. </li></ul><ul><li>Some maps show us land and water, while others show us roads and buildings. </li></ul><ul><li>There are also maps that show how many people live in a town, or what kinds of plants are found there? </li></ul><ul><li>People can make maps to explain just about anything about a place. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Guide to Mapmaking <ul><li>Map : A drawn picture of a place, usually drawn to scale on a flat surface. </li></ul><ul><li>Cartographer : A person who makes maps. </li></ul>

Key Elements <ul><li>DOGSTAILS makes it easy to remember the important parts of a map. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Not every map will have all of these parts: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Date </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Orientation </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Grid </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Scale </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Title </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Author </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Index </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Legend </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Sources </li></ul></ul></ul>

Key Elements <ul><li>Date : when the map was made </li></ul><ul><li>Orientation : directions (north arrow) at the top of the map, or a compass rose (all four points N, S, E, W) </li></ul><ul><li>Grid : crossed lines drawn on the map to help you find places on the map </li></ul><ul><li>Scale : what the map distance is </li></ul>Map Scale Compass Rose Compass
  6. 6. Key Elements <ul><li>Title : what, where, and when </li></ul><ul><li>Author : who made the map </li></ul><ul><li>Index : just like an index in a book, a map index tells you where to find certain places </li></ul>Map Index
  7. 7. Key Elements <ul><li>Legend : what the symbols and colors mean, also called the key </li></ul><ul><li>Sources : where the information on the map came from </li></ul>Map Legend

North America Map Exercise <ul><li>You will label the North America map using all of the DOGSTAIL elements. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>You will be graded on the elements. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Make sure your map includes the date, orientation, a grid, (don’t worry about scale), title, author, an index, a legend, and sources. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>If these items were already included on the map, circle them and label them. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>For items not included on the map, draw them and label them. </li></ul></ul></ul>
