Diagrams for Making Boxes

  1. 1. Step 1. "Square-up" the face of the card. Example: if the card is 5"wide, then center the design and make it 5" tall as well...ending upwith a 5" square piece to work with.
  2. 2. Step 3. Flip card face over and draw a line corner to corner to form an"X" on the back of the card.
  3. 3. Step 4. Fold each pointed cornerto the center of the "X". This willform a smaller square....lookingsomewhat like an envelope. Lookat both illustrations on this page.
  4. 4. Step 5. The reddashed lines arethe fold line creasesthat you made inStep 4. Now takethe corner and foldacross to the pointthe dashed linecrosses the "X" line.Crease each side asyou fold. Once thecreases are madewe will use the foldlines for folding andcutting in the nextstep.
  5. 5. Step 6. You should now have the second folded crease line (shownwith black ink). You will now cut from the edge to that second foldline.....cut only to the corner of the square that is made by the secondfold lines. Look at illustration below.
  6. 6. Step 8. You will fold the side wings that you previously cutto the inside so that that they overlap one another. Thenlift up the sides to form the sides of the box lid...fold in thesmall wings and fold over the other corners to form the Original "X" line.other two sides of the box lid. Once finished, the box sideshave been formed and the corners of the original squaremeet inside the middle of the box lid. These are the lines where you made the previous 4 cuts.
  7. 7. Extra Notes: Notice the original square that youmade from the front of the card. The diagonal linesthat make the "X" are shown....note the "X" is madeon the back of the card and does not show on thefront of the card. The dashed lines show thethree sets of folded line creases that are madewhen proceeding through the steps....all folds aremade on the back of the card face. Note that thecentral picture on the card will end up on thediagonal of the box top as shown here.If you want it to be square to the box top, youmust cut the original card face on the diagonalby turning 1/4 of a turn to make a diamond.
