  • Structure• Plot – The sequence of events through which an authorconstructs a story• Structure - the way the writer arranges the plot of a text –not the action itself• The author uses the structure to create meaning that is notdirectly stated• The author has made a conscious choice to arrange theactions and events in a particular order or format to conveysomething about the narrative and characters
  • Types of Plots• Chronological Order – the story is told in theorder that the events happened• Flashback – an event or scene that took placebefore the present time in the narrative isinserted into the chronological order of thetext• In media res (in the middle of things) – thenarrative starts in the middle of the actionwith out exposition
  • Analyzing MeaningYoung Goodman Brown• We look for elements that are repeated• Dialogue – “I will not go any further”• Action – He continues to walk deeper into theforest• Description – The forest grew darker
  • Analyzing Meaning• We look for shifts in:• Direction• Focus• Time• Place
  • Analyzing Meaning• When the author makes these choices in thestructure the reader must pay attention• The author is communicating a deepermeaning• The significance of the action is moreimportant than the action itself

  • Young Goodman Brown• Hawthorne uses the structure tocommunicate Goodman’s Brown realization ofhis own sin• As the events progress he also uses the setting– Goodman Brown walks deeper into thedarkness and into sin• The dream at the end is another plot device –Goodman, as well as the reader, is not sure ifit actually happened.
