Processing performance of computers is increased by using multi-core processors, execution of software in an environment separated from the underlying hardware resources Storage virtualization, the process of completely abstracting logical storage from physical storage Memory virtualization, aggregating RAM resources from networked systems into a single memory pool Network virtualization, creation of a virtualized network addressing space within or across network subnets
This gives rise to new cloud-based computing and storage models in which user data and even the applications that use the data are hosted at data centers in the ‘‘cloud’’ and users access the resources over a network.
I will bring some hardware – hard disk as presentation material.
- expect all major hard drive makers to develop similar technologies - Capacity leadership is the key to Cloud Computing stream. - Performance and reliability leadership is also the key issue for better quality of Cloud computing service provider. - Manufacturers who provide the fastest drives will have advantage. - Flash will be the leading choice in portable applications where a limited number of small files are used because it will offer the lowest overall system cost – Google Chrome OS net book. - Everything will change over time, as declining prices cause flash to replace HDD in portable applications where storage requirements reach some natural limit. - In applications where file size or the total number of files to be stored is of more concern than total system cost, HDDs will prevail - Cloud Computing servers.
IT hardware vendors are not offering cloud storage products – yet; Sun - experimented with cloud-based concepts. However, several vendors are positioning themselves to supply cloud computing hardware to businesses or to sell cloud computing and storage services to both business and end-users. Amazon - transform into a 21st century IT utility. IT infrastructure uses Linux servers and Oracle Real Application Clusters with HP MSA storage arrays. EMC - announced its Hulk and Maiu clustered NAS hardware/ software. HP – acquired Polyserve technology. Google - cloud computing services provider leveraging its own tera-scale data centre infrastructure. This is being aggressively built out and Google probably owns the largest IT infrastructure on the planet. IBM and Google - seed universities with small cloud computing facilities so that computer science students become familiar with the programming concepts. Isilon - has a growing clustered NAS product line/ launched the world's largest NAS cluster with almost 100 nodes- a theoretical 2.3PB of capacity. NetApp - become more active if a cloud computing enterprise market develops. Sun - the hardware/software vendor with the most cloud computing components. Seagate - Evault acquisition and is building on that to offer online backup to its own data centres. Seagate wants to become a major force in supplying storage-based online services to businesses and is another prospective cloud computing services supplier.
CSIT 534 presentation: The Rise of Cloud Computing and Data Storage Cherri Chiang Edmond Low Cherri Edmond Confidential
Cloud computing is using the existing power of internet to host software applications and store information at any situation in which computing is done in a remote location (out in the clouds), rather than on your desktop or portable device using the Internet connection.
A way to access applications hosted on the web through your web browser (Software as a Service -- SaaS)
A pay-as-you-go model for IT resources accessed over the Internet (Platform as a Service – PaaS)
Use of commodity computers, distributed throughout an internet, to perform parallel processing, distributed storage, indexing and mining of data
An IT buzzword that assures potential clients that your product is on the cutting edge of technology
Zettabytes = one billion trillion bytes: 1 with 21 zeros at the end or 1 billion gigabytes — is roughly equivalent to the capacity of 5.1 million computer hard drives, or all the hard drives in Minnesota.
