How To Optimize Your Social Media Data Flow for All Networks - Presentation Transcript

    1. Know and Master Your Social Media Data Flow Louis Gray -- May 2009
    2. The Social Data Explosion
      • The growing number of social sites enables users to rapidly share text, images and video to interested friends and followers around the world
      • Social networks, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Twitter and FriendFeed can operate both as the destinations for new data or as transmitters to other sites

    3. The Social Data Impact
      • The ease of data creation and distribution can create conflicts of choice as to the ‘best’ way to send updates from one network to another
      • Comments and other social activity can occur in multiple locations with differing social networks and friend circles

    4. Confusion And Complexity
      • One Approach: Send All Data to All Places
        • Spawning duplication
        • Mixing social circles (e.g. pro vs. casual)
        • Missing downstream conversations, activity
        • Appearing disjointed and uninvolved, leading to resentment

    5. Selectively Manage Your Data
      • Choose what updates are most appropriate for which destinations where you participate
        • You may want your YouTube and Flickr updates on Facebook, but not on LinkedIn or Plaxo
        • You may want your Twitter updates on FriendFeed, but not on Facebook
      • Choose the major tools to help distribute
        • For blogs, this is typically RSS
        • FriendFeed can leverage Twitter, based on your account preferences

    6. Data Flow: Blogging
      • Publish once, land in multiple places
        • RSS sends to feed readers, like Google Reader, in full text
        • Headlines or excerpts can be sent to social networks, like FriendFeed, Socialmedian
        • You can also use tools to send headlines and links to Twitter

    7. Data Flow: Twitter
      • Microupdate, Mega Reach
        • Twitter, Identica and other microupdate services can be sent to aggregation networks, like FriendFeed and Plaxo
        • Twitter messages can also update your status on Facebook and LinkedIn

    8. Data Flow: FriendFeed
      • 57 Supported Services
        • FriendFeed can import updates from all around the Web
        • Most users are only active on a dozen or so, but the option is available to add many more
        • This leaves potential for duplication of data if not managed well

    9. Data Flow: FriendFeed
      • A Strong Data Conduit
        • FriendFeed can send as much or as little data to Twitter as users select
        • Manage the data distribution by choosing some services to send, while not including others
        • Too much syndication can lead to flooding of Twitter, annoying followers
        • Don’t create a data loop!

      • Leveraging RSS, I send my blog posts to subscribers on RSS readers and in e-mail by FeedBlitz. I trust FriendFeed to distribute select sites to Twitter, which in turn, updates Facebook. This solution makes FriendFeed the foundation and conduit, while not drowning Twitter followers in too many updates.

    11. Don’t Forget to Participate
      • Social networks expect you to listen and participate, not just broadcasting. Be sure you are tuned in to conversations on Facebook, FriendFeed, Twitter and Socialmedian about your content, and respond as you are able
      • Search tools in FriendFeed and Twitter aid discovery. Tools like BackType and TweetBeep can help provide e-mail alerts. Facebook sends you updates by default
