1. How did you attract/ address your target audience?
From doing our previous audience research we decided that
our most appealing audience would be 16- 21 year olds and
that it would be more for females than males. We did this
research by creating a questionnaire.
Throughout the whole making of our horror film opening we
kept this in mind to make sure it was as appealing to our
target audience as possible.
From doing the research we found out that females do not
like blood and gore so we made sure we didn’t include any
of that. But they did tell us they liked mysteries and the build
up of tension. We achieved mystery and tension by
revealing the doll slowly part by part and by using
flashbacks. The music also helped to build up a creepy
tense atmosphere. Many of the girls interviewed enjoyed
women in black so we got a few ideas from that film.
I have decided to get opinions of our film opening from
people of our target audience, who are also quite simular to
the voki we created. I have asked both a 17 year old and 21
year old as this shows both ends of our target audience.
2. Lydia Edmonds Age: 17
Did you enjoy the film opening and would you watch the whole film, if so why?
Yes i enjoyed the opening, and i would like to see the rest of the film
because i want to know what will happen to the boy, why he felt like he
wanted to pick the doll up and it seems like a weird but scary film.
Do you think it fits the horror genre and if so why or why not?
Yes it looks like a horror, because when you see a doll and then see
it come alive, people tend to have nightmares about that kind of stuff,
it plays a simple trick to the viewers to get them scared as it’s an
inanimate object coming to life.
What could we have done to improve our film opening?
To improve some of the shots, you could have added some effects such
as making a scene blur in then out to focus, so it doesn’t make that
shots look so fixed together, might make it look a bit smoother.
What do you think is effective about the film opening?
The music is quite eerie, making the views wonder whats going to
happen to this boy in the middle of the woods. The over dramatic
sound of the feet shuffling in the leaves on the floor increases the
impact that he’s alone and has no one to help protect him if something
terrible happens to him. The unravelling of the dolls feel, then a quick
cross cut to her running in the woods looked pretty smooth and shows
the audience clearly that this doll is possessed or alive in someway.
3. Emma Watkins Age: 21
Did you enjoy the film opening and would you watch the whole film, if so why?
Yes I would want to watch the whole film to find out what happens,
Although dolls scare me!
Do you think it fits the horror genre and if so why or why not?
Yes, the human form of the doll looks evil, the doll looks really creepy
and the music adds a really dramatic effect. Also the crunching of the
leaves is effective. Maybe the main character could have been a girl
instead of a boy, as it is traditional for the girl to be a victim.
What could we have done to improve our film opening?
Again it may have been more effective if the main character was a girl.
What do you think is effective about the film opening?
It leaves you on a cliff hanger which makes you want to watch on - its
probably going to be a good story!! I think its also creepy that its set in
the woods!
