  2. 2. How is Aboriginal Health a whole of region issue? <ul><li>Aboriginal people are 1.1% of the population within CNAHS and are represented in all subregions and all council districts </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Aboriginal people are under-represented in mainstream health services including general practice, and particularly in primary care. </li></ul><ul><li>Aboriginal people tend to seek help at a later stage of illness and have poorer health outcomes. </li></ul><ul><li>Life expectancy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males is 56.0 years, (76.6 for non-Indigenous) and 62.7 for females (82.0) </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Aboriginal people run twice the risk of death from CVD of other Australians. The 25-54 age group the risk is up to nine times greater (National Heart Foundation, 1999) </li></ul><ul><li>Rheumatic heart disease 30 times higher for males and 22 times higher for females </li></ul><ul><li>Deaths from chronic respiratory disease are 3 to 5 times higher and from infective respiratory conditions, 9 to 11 times higher. </li></ul><ul><li>Higher death rates from cancer are due to the more advanced stage of tumours at diagnosis. </li></ul><ul><li>Prevalence of diabetes is estimated at 2 to 4 times higher than that of other Australians </li></ul>
