The first thing that the audience see isthe beginning of a camera tape, as if theaudience are viewing back footage ofthe events that happened on that nightin New York, this is done for a reason tomake the film seem as real as possible, almost like a documentary. At the bottom you can see a counterwhich counts the time like a usual handheld camera does. The titles appear like just like a taperecording camera if you would view itback however it says ‘Property of the U.SGovernment’ which shows that thecamera is connected to the incident inthe movie and this is serious businessaffecting the whole of the U.S.A. We hear a buzzing sound as if the camera is not properly working or it needs to be fixed. The changes in pitch of the sound creates tension which is significant because this film is a sci-fi/horror. Silence is also often used because it also highlights the fact that the audience don’t know what is going on and are slightly confused at the beginning.
The motivated cut from the titlesequence starts with the mainprotagonist walking to his apartmentwindow in New York. His apartmenttells us about the characters in themovie that they are quite wealthy; theview from the window overlooking NewYork in the morning is significantbecause in the next few hours later thewhole city is destroyed by analien/monster.Quite low-key lighting is also used (asit’s the morning) which hasconnotations with mystery andtension. From the beginning of thefilm we see the city asnormal, however as the filmprogresses into night time things beginto change.
