West Point Foundry was an early ironworks center located in Cold Spring, NY that operated from 1817 to 1911. It was built in 1817 as an iron casting business for domestic weapons production.
Manufactured weapons and a variety of iron products for civilian use. Including materials for steam engines, locomotives, pipes, water wheels and mill equipment that sparked America’s burgeoning industrial economy.
Employed as many 1200 workers, operating 24 hours a day, in three shifts.
It is most famous for its production of Parrot Rifles during the Civil War.
The gun was invented by Robert Parker Parrott in 1860.
The rise of the Steel Industry and the declining demand for cast iron after the Civil War caused it to gradually sink into bankruptcy and cease operations in the early 20th Century.
