Expanding as a writer requires pushing yourself in styles and topics you don't usually write about.
Pushing the boundaries is how we grow and advance as writers.

See what I did with the “W’s” there! I know, I’m just so clever Today I want to talk to you about pushing your limits! Not by working more, but by adding more variety. LET’S CONNECT Writers Expansion I have the privilege, as a freelancer, to write a vast variety of topics and styles for clients. I have my own voice, which is important, as we have talked about before, but get to change things up. I’m a personal/brain development girl. That is my comfort zone. This morning I found myself, however, writing a fictional story set in the 1930′s. Would it have been my work of choice? Nope, fiction is not really my thing. But you know what? I rather enjoyed myself and found that it flowed pretty easy once I got started. And, my client loved it, so guess it wasn’t so bad. My point is, sometimes as writers we get stuck in one arena. One subject, one style, never really pushing the boundaries on our skills. Pushing t he boundar ies is how we gr ow and advanc e as wr it er s. I encourage you to try something totally different from your usual, even if it is just for your own benefit. Are you a non-fiction writer? Try your hand at a fictional short story. If that feels too overwhelming, just write one scene. Do you write teenage romance novels? Try writing about an experience you had with a family member or friend as a child. You may discover a new style or topic that you really enjoy, or it may be a struggle. Either way, your writing will benefit from the attempt. SEARCH POSTS
