“When I see a barrier, I cry and I curse, and then I get a ladder and climb over it.” John H. Johnson
Being a media mogul is not an easy road.
His widowed mother’s hard work along with a move to Chicago, in the midst of the Great Depression, gave Johnson a greater determination to succeed.
So, what makes the difference in why some people make it, while others flounder?

Developing a Mogul Mindset
In honor of Black History Month, I thought I would share the quote above from John H. Johnson,
founder of Johnson Publishing Company. Aside from starting the largest minority-owned Publishing
Company in the US, Mr. Johnson is also the creator of both Ebony and JET magazines.
Being a media mogul is not an easy road.

determination to succeed.

The Mogul Mind
We have talked quite a bit about our mindsets here on Mindful
Mondays, but today I want to talk about that “mogul” mindset.

free from the cubicle?

all the time. Mr. Johnson said he’ll cry and curse. It is ok to struggle. It doesn’t mean something is
wrong with you when challenges come. The defining factor between those who make it and those who

Get a Ladder and Climb Over the Obstacle
Setbacks happen and it is how you handle them that makes the difference. You can take some time to
be upset. Hey, you feel what you feel right! And when you work so hard for something that doesn’t
work out, it bytes!
But, when all is said and done, you gotta get back in the arena. Pushing through is what builds your
persistence for the next time, just like those last few reps in a workout are what make you stronger. The
muscles tear down, but then heal and strengthen.
Those who change their lives and grow can see a better picture for the future. The Entrepreneurial
Mogul can see freedom. The long hours, the passing on outings to read and research through the
learning curve is all worth it for the bigger picture. Running your own schedule and being your own
boss, but most importantly:
Taking Control of Your Own Life!
Moguls don’t have time to continue to wallow when obstacles come, because they are already on to
the next thing. They’ve got that ladder out ready to climb.

Again, they are willing to work and climb those ladders. The mogul mindset says that it’s a process not
an event.
Those with an entitlement mindset wait for an even to occur, like winning the lottery for instance.
But, the real winners don’t wait.

“I’m a greater believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more
