Divide students into groups of three. Based on typical accounting enrollment numbers, I will probably have 15 groups of three.
Assign each group an “accounting mentor,” a Dodgeville High School alumni currently working in an accounting-related field.
Assign each group the financial analysis of a corporation traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Occasionally I will look up the list of the WORST performing corporations and have the students analyze those companies.
Using Google Docs spreadsheet program:
One student is assigned the horizontal analysis of their corporation’s financial statements
One student is assigned the vertical analysis of their corporation’s financial statements
One student is assigned the calculation of their corporation’s financial ratios
Spreadsheets will be shared with accounting mentors for critiquing.
Students will video group conference call with their accounting mentors. Students should conduct a career interview with their mentor.
Where they work
What their duties are
Where they went to school, what they majored in
Key piece of advice for students to succeed as an accounting major
What they like best about their job, least
Anything else of interest . . .
Students should incorporate Skype video and information from Skype video conference into iMovie to create 1-2 minute video on accounting career.
Sample Grading Rubric

Send an invite to the group’s accounting mentor.
Students should compose an in-depth written review of their corporation with their mentor serving as editor. The written review should cover:

It will allow for easier student communica-tion than Skype.

Financial Analysis Rubric
The accounting mentors will conduct the evaluation of the final written document. As the classroom teacher, I will evaluate the classroom presentation.
Attached you will find numerous suggestions for evaluation rubrics.
