  2. 2. Contents <ul><li>I will look at three different religions and their places of worship. </li></ul><ul><li>The Religions are : </li></ul><ul><li>Sikhism </li></ul><ul><li>Judaism </li></ul><ul><li>Islam </li></ul>

Gurdwaras <ul><li>The place of worship for Sikhs are called Gurdwaras </li></ul><ul><li>The most famous Gurdwara is the </li></ul><ul><li>“ Golden Temple” in Amritsar, India. </li></ul><ul><li>This is a very holy site as it houses the original Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which is the holy book of the Sikhs. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Golden Temple <ul><li>The head priests of Sikhism reside in Golden Temple. </li></ul><ul><li>The Golden Temple is in the Sikhs holy city of Amritsar. </li></ul><ul><li>Amritsar means “ Pool of the Nectar of Immortality”. </li></ul>The Golden Temple

Golden Temple <ul><li>The Golden temple was made in 1604. </li></ul><ul><li>It was made by the tenth Guru of the Sikhs. “Guru Gobind Singh” </li></ul><ul><li>Sikhs from all over the world come here to worship and bathe in the “Sarovar”, the lake that surrounds the temple. </li></ul><ul><li>In gurdwaras “Langar” is given than is when food is given out the unfortunate </li></ul>
  6. 6. Judaism <ul><li>The place of worship for Jews is a “Synagogue” </li></ul><ul><li>Synagogue means House of prayer </li></ul><ul><li>Synagogues are usually in sections </li></ul><ul><li>A Jewish priest is called a rabbi </li></ul><ul><li>Rabbi means “Teacher”. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Synagogues <ul><li>A synagogue is a place where Jews pray. </li></ul><ul><li>In all Synagogues there have to have the Tanakh </li></ul><ul><li>The Tanakh consists of The Torah (most important), Nevi'im, Ketuvim. </li></ul><ul><li>These are the Holy books of Judaism . </li></ul>

Ben Ezra <ul><li>Ben Ezra is a famous synagogue in Egypt </li></ul><ul><li>Founded:882 </li></ul><ul><li>Rebuilt:1892 </li></ul><ul><li>Location: Egypt Cairo </li></ul><ul><li>The Ben Ezra got its name from Abraham Ben Ezra </li></ul><ul><li>It is one of the main synagogues in Cairo </li></ul>
  9. 9. Islam <ul><li>People who follow Islam are known as Muslims and worship in mosques. </li></ul><ul><li>Prayers in the mosque are led by a priest who goes by different names or titles depending on which sect of Islam he belongs to (e.g. Imam, mullah ) </li></ul>
  10. 10. Mosques <ul><li>The most important place of worship for the Muslims is Ka’aba. It is in Mecca, Saudi Arabia which is the holiest city for the Muslims. </li></ul><ul><li>Ka’aba is a large structure, roughly cubic in shape, made from granite. </li></ul><ul><li>Every Muslim should make a pilgrimage to Ka’aba. This is called “hajj” </li></ul>

Ka’aba <ul><li>The Ka’aba was built by Prophet Abraham and represents the house of God on earth. </li></ul><ul><li>The sole purpose for Ka’aba is to worship God and only to worship one God . </li></ul><ul><li>When the Ka’aba was first built it was taken over by Arab pagans .Until prophet Muhammad came and destroyed all the idols. </li></ul>
