  2. 2. What do I do after I collect the waypoints with the GPS units? <ul><li>Download the waypoints to the computer </li></ul>
  3. 3. 1. Download the waypoints from the GPS units into Garmin MapSource software. <ul><li>Start Menu > All Programs >Garmin >MapSource </li></ul>
  4. 4. MapSource <ul><li>Click on Transfer>Receive From Device </li></ul>
  5. 5. MapSource <ul><li>Click the Find Device Button and select the boxes you wish to receive </li></ul><ul><li>Usually you just want Waypoints and Tracks </li></ul><ul><li>Press the Receive button when ready </li></ul>
  6. 6. MapSource <ul><li>Waypoints can be seen to the left hand side of the screen </li></ul>
  7. 7. MapSource <ul><li>Right Click on a waypoint </li></ul><ul><li>At the bottom of the menu click on Waypoint(s) Properties… </li></ul>
  8. 8. MapSource <ul><li>Here you can change the name and symbol </li></ul>
  9. 9. MapSource <ul><li>You can also edit the Tracks </li></ul><ul><li>Right click on a track and click on Track Properties </li></ul>

  11. 11. MapSource <ul><li>Once you finish editing your waypoints and tracks you need to send them back to the GPS unit but this time click </li></ul><ul><li>Send to Device (make sure to turn GPS on) </li></ul>
  12. 12. MapSource <ul><li>Click the Find Device Button and select the boxes you wish to receive </li></ul><ul><li>Usually you just want Waypoints and Tracks </li></ul><ul><li>Press the Send button when ready </li></ul>

  14. 14. 2. Download waypoints into DNR Garmin Software <ul><li>Start Menu > All Programs >DNRGarmin >DNRGarmin </li></ul>Make sure the GPS is turned ON BEFORE opening the program <ul><li>Start Menu > All Programs >DNRGarmin >DNRGarmin </li></ul>
  15. 15. MN DNR - Garmin <ul><li>Click on Waypoint>Download </li></ul>
  16. 16. MN DNR - Garmin <ul><li>Delete waypoints you do not want by selecting the whole row and pressing the red x button </li></ul><ul><li>Always delete the Garmin Taiwan, Garmin Europe, and Garmin waypoints </li></ul>
  17. 17. MN DNR - Garmin <ul><li>Click on File >Save To >File… </li></ul>
  18. 18. MN DNR - Garmin <ul><li>Then save the waypoints as a Text file (*.txt) </li></ul>
  19. 19. 3. Import the Waypoints into ArcMap <ul><li>Close MN DNR – Garmin </li></ul><ul><li>Turn of the GPS unit </li></ul><ul><li>Open ArcMap </li></ul><ul><li>Start Menu > All Programs >ArcGIS >ArcMap 10 </li></ul>

  22. 22. ArcMap <ul><li>Select the text file you saved and click Add </li></ul>
  23. 23. ArcMap <ul><li>Make sure there is a Geographic Coordinate System in the Description Box </li></ul><ul><li>Click OK </li></ul>
  24. 24. ArcMap <ul><li>Right Click on the Event layer you just created </li></ul><ul><li>Click on Data >Export Data </li></ul>
  25. 25. ArcMap <ul><li>Rename the Export Output to a logical name </li></ul><ul><li>Click OK </li></ul>
  26. 26. ArcMap <ul><li>Click Yes </li></ul>
  27. 27. ArcMap <ul><li>Right click on the Event layer and click Remove </li></ul>
  28. 28. ArcMap <ul><li>You the waypoints are now a real layer on the Map </li></ul><ul><li>Click to zoom in and see them better </li></ul>
  29. 29. ArcMap <ul><li>You can repeat this for as many layers as you want </li></ul>
