  • 4. Zealotry for Justice Exodus 2 11 Some time after that, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his kinsfolk and witnessed their labors. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his kinsmen. 12 He turned this way and that and, seeing no one about, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand 13 When he went out the next day, he found two Hebrews fighting; so he said to the offender, “Why do you strike your fellow?”
  • 5. The lone ranger Exodus 2 14 He retorted, “Who made you, the man, chief and ruler over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses was frightened, and thought: Then the matter is known! Exodus 18 21 You shall also seek out from among all the people capable men who fear God, trustworthy men who spurn ill-gotten gain. Set these over them as chiefs of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, and 22let them judge the people at all times. Have them bring every major dispute to you, but let them judge every minor dispute themselves. Make it easier for yourself by letting them share the burden with you.
  • 6. Early retirement? Exodus 4 11 And the Lord said to him, “Who gives man speech? Who makes him dumb or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12Now go, and I will be with you as you speak and will instruct you what to say.” 18 Moses went back to his father-in-law Yether and said to him, “Let me go back to my kinsmen in Egypt and see how they are faring.” And Yithro said to Moses, “Go in peace.” 19The Lord said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who sought to kill you are dead.” 20 So Moses took his wife and sons, mounted them on an ass, and went back to the land of Egypt; and Moses took the rod of God with him.
  • 7. Zealotry renewed Exodus 32 19 As soon as Moses came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, he became enraged; and he hurled the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain. 20He took the calf that they had made and burned it; he ground it to powder and strewed it upon the water and so made the Israelites drink it. 26 Moses stood up in the gate of the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come here!” And all the Levites rallied to him. 27He said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Each of you put sword on thigh, go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay brother, neighbor, and kin.” 28The Levites did as Moses had bidden; and some three thousand of the people fell that day.
  • 8. Zealotry challenged Numbers 11 24 Moses went out and reported the words of the Lord to the people. He gathered seventy of the people’s elders and stationed them around the Tent. 25Then the Lord came down in a cloud and spoke to him; He drew upon the spirit that was on him and put it upon the seventy elders. And when the spirit rested upon them, they spoke in ecstasy, but did not continue. 26Two men, one named Eldad and the other Medad, had remained in camp; yet the spirit rested upon them—they were among those recorded, but they had not gone out to the Tent—and they prophesied in the camp. 27A youth ran out and told Moses, saying, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!” 28And Yehoshua son of Nun, Moses’ attendant from his youth, spoke up and said, “My lord Moses, restrain them!” 29But Moses said to him, “Are you wrought up on my account? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord put His spirit upon them!”

The ultimate(?) showdown Numbers 16 5 Then he spoke to Korah and all his company, saying, “Come morning, the Lord will make known who is His and who is holy, and will grant him access to Himself; He will grant access to the one He has chosen. 6Do this: You, Korah and all your band, take fire pans, 7and tomorrow put fire in them and lay incense on them before the Lord. Then the man whom the Lord chooses, he shall be the holy one. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!” 35 And a fire went forth from the Lord and consumed the two hundred and fifty men offering the incense.
  • 10. The aftershocks Numbers 17 6 Next day the whole Israelite community railed against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You two have brought death upon the Lord’s people!” 21 Moses spoke thus to the Israelites. Their chieftains gave him a staff for each chieftain of an ancestral house, twelve staffs in all; among these staffs was that of Aaron. 22Moses deposited the staffs before the Lord, in the Tent of Meeting. 23The next day Moses entered the Tent of Meeting, and there the staff of Aaron of the house of Levi had sprouted: it had brought forth sprouts, produced blossoms, and borne almonds. 24Moses then brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the Israelites; each identified and recovered his staff. 27 But the Israelites said to Moses, “Lo, we perish! We are lost, all of us lost! 28Everyone who so much as ventures near the Lord’s Tabernacle will die. Alas, we are doomed to perish!”
  • 11. Zealotry in retirement? Again? Numbers 25 1 While Israel was staying at Shittim, the people profaned themselves by whoring with the Moabite women, 2who invited the people to the sacrifices for their god. The people partook of them and worshiped that god. 3Thus Israel attached itself to Baal-peor, and the Lord was incensed with Israel. 4The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the ringleaders and have them publicly impaled before the Lord, so that the Lord’s wrath may turn away from Israel.” 5So Moses said to Israel’s officials, “Each of you slay those of his men who attached themselves to Baal-peor.” 6Just then one of the Israelites came and brought a Midianite woman over to his companions, in the sight of Moses and of the whole Israelite community who were weeping at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. 7When Phinehas, son of Elazar son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he left the assembly and, taking a spear in his hand, 8he followed the Israelite into the chamber and stabbed both of them, the Israelite and the woman, through the belly. Then the plague against the Israelites was checked.
