Critical Research - Everything you need to know about Book Research - Presentation Transcript

    1. Book Research Everything you need to know about book research
    2. The Do’s
      • Be confident you know what you are looking for.
      • Do ask for advice and help on how to use the library catalogue.
      • Do always write down the reference information for your book to build a complete list of sources.
    3. The Don’ts
      • Don’t rely on the title, use the index.
      • Don’t give up! As you read, look for answers to your questions.
      • Don’t read it and then walk away! Tell yourself the main points or ideas of what you’ve just read and MAKE NOTES.
    4. Harvard Referencing System
      • Use the title page, not the book cover, for the reference details.
      • The required elements for a book reference are:
      • Author, Initials/First name., Year. Title of book . Edition. Place of publication: Publisher.
    5. Example of Harvard Referencing
      • Mason, Jennifer. 1996. Qualitative Researching. London: Sage Publications.
    6. Useful websites to assist with book research
      • Long Road Library link on Moodle
      • http://moodle.longroad.ac.uk/moodle/login/index.php
      • Google books
      • http://books.google.co.uk/
      • Questia, an online library of books
      • http://www.questia.com/search
      • This website allows you to see the index of
      • a book but you have to pay to see the
      • pages. It is still a useful tool.
