The Mesolithic period refers to archaeological cultures that existed between the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. It developed as a category for artifacts that did not fit into other prehistoric classifications. Some cultures from this period include the Azilian, Balkan mesolithic, Capsian, Fosna-Hensbacka, Harifian, Kebaran, Jomon, Jeulmun, Komsa, Kongemose, and Kunda.
