Introduction Hi, my name is Niamh and I’m going to answer some of the questions you might have about Christmas in the UK. • Why do we celebrate Christmas? • How do British people prepare for Christmas? • What food do we eat on Christmas day? • Why do we give presents? • Why do we put up decorations? • Where do our presents come from? • What is the run up to Christmas called? • What do we do in the snow?

Why do we celebrate Christmas? • Every year in December we celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ .That is why we call this time of year Christmas, we celebrate the mass or church service, for Christ. • Christmas is a truly magical season, bringing families and friends together to share the much loved customs and traditions which have been around for centuries.

How do British people prepare for Christmas ? • During the weeks before Christmas day, we send cards , watch nativity plays and go to carol services. • Nativity plays are when children act out what happened on Christmas day. • Carol services are when either children or adults go out to care homes , hospitals and on the street to spread the Christmas joy.
  4. 4. What food do we eat on Christmas day? • At Christmas time our traditional main meal’s would be turkey , chicken, beef or gammon • Drink for adults might be the option of mulled wine. • For desert a nice mince pie will do! • For the kids we will have whatever to drink
  5. 5. Why do we give presents? • We give presents to people as a kind gesture from when Jesus got given the gifts from the wise men (magi). Also beacause of the gift that god gave us his only son !!! • We give gifts as a sign of appreciation towards another person . It should make you happy that you are doing a nice thing for someone .
  6. 6. Why do we put up decorations? Christmas trees originated in the German states around the 15th century especially the fir tree. Christmas trees are an ancient German tradition King George the 3rd brought Christmas trees to England It only became common when Queen Victoria reigned . Wreaths are put up on doors as a sign of christmas spirit.
  7. 7. Where do our presents come from? • Santa also known as St. Nicolas, gives us presents on christmas eve when were asleep. • He lives in the North Pole with his elfs !!! • Santa has 12 reindeer that guides his sleigh with main one Rudolph.
  8. 8. WHAT IS THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS CALLED? • The run up to christmas is called advent and in church every Sunday on the run up to christmas in December they light a candle. • We have a calender which has little doors on it and inside it has chocolate it is called an advent calender .
  9. 9. What do we do in the snow? • In the winter we normally get a lot of snow especially around christmas time . • Children go out on a snowy day and build snowmen or have snowball fights!!!!! • It might be cold but we love snow .
