Highland Airways was an airline based in Inverness, Scotland which ceased trading
in 2010 after failing to secure new investment. The Prestwick-built Jetstream 31,
which had been owned by the airline had to be sold to pay off debts.
Administrators PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) confirmed that the aircraft,
registered as G-UIST was sold for a specific purpose which also led to employment
and boosted the local economy of the Scottish Highlands by generating £1.1m.
PwC partner Bruce Cartwright said: "There was real diversity in the notes of
interest in purchasing the planes after the airline went out of business. This
included film production firms, who appear to schedule activity years in advance. We
never imagined that they would look for them via an administration."
What use was G-UIST put to?

Beth Howard, a resident of Eldon, Iowa sits at her kitchen table and pulls back the
curtain to peer at a group of youths with grim faces and dour portrayals taking
pictures on her front lawn.
"People seldom know that people live here, much less that there's someone watching
them from the other side of the curtain," says Howard.
The interior of the house is off-limits to visitors, but Howard's lease with the owner,
the state historical society, includes a clause stating that she has to be nice to
interlopers. Tourists sometimes tramp into the house, ignoring the sign that says
"Private residence. Please do not disturb." At night, they'll train their headlights on
the house. Then again, the rent is just $250 a month.
Why has this house been famous since 1930?

In September last year, the University of New Hampshire started offering a new
course on this. While the class explores how law and journalism impact sports in
general, it has also had a few science tutorials to teach the students.
“These scientists, who are all doctors, are going to answer all the questions you’ve
been dying to know but I can’t answer because I’m not a scientist,” professor Michael
McCann said to his students, many of whom were perched on the edge of their seats,
trying to catch a glimpse of the props in the room.
The three scientists were John Leonard, an MIT engineering professor, and UNH
professors Michael Briggs, who teaches in the physics department, and Martin
Wosnik, who teaches in the school of marine science and ocean engineering. The
lessons learned have been invaluable for anyone pursuing a legal career or simply
wanting to win an argument with friends.
What were the scientists trying to show in class (or) what is the name of the course?

After it is done, each of them is immediately taken for a psychiatric evaluation.
“The experience can be quite draining, so [the producers] want to make sure you
don’t want to kill yourself — or someone else,” an on-set source reveals.
“After that, they send you to this beautiful house where you can get anything you
want: back rubs, nails done, hair cut. It is kind of like decompression before you go
back into society.”
What intense experience is this, which has led to editorial accusations of staging and
dramatic license in the past?

This Victorian home is located about an hour outside of Pittsburgh in Fayette
Country, Pennsylvania has now been put up on the market for $300,000. According
to its listing, it has four bedrooms, one full bath, and sits on 1.76 acres. The three-
story house also has a detached four-car garage and a pool.
Scott and Barbara Lloyd, who bought the house in 1976, gave their permission for
the place to be used for something fourteen years later. They're now retired and
looking to downsize.

Operation Torch was the British-American invasion of French North Africa during
the North African campaign of World War II. The Americans attacked at three
different locations in French North Africa, one of the three being the landings at X
because of its important port and the major administrative centers.
X was an important strategic port during World War II and hosted the X Conference
in 1943, in which Churchill and Roosevelt discussed the progress of the war. It was
also the site of a large American air base, which was the staging area for all
American aircraft for the European Theater of Operations during World War II.
Why did this operation lead to something being moved from the spring of 1943 to
November 26, 1942?
And the answer is…
One of the landings was at Casablanca, and the release for the movie
was rushed to take advantage of the publicity during the invasion.

As a pilot for British charter airline Astraeus Airlines, he routinely flew
unconventional clients around the world. In 2008, for example, he flew an RAF
squadron back home after duty in Afghanistan.
In October 2010, he took the controls of a Boeing 737 to fly a football team from John
Lennon International Airport to a Europa League tie in Napoli. The match ended in
a 0-0 draw, but the passengers said they were incredibly excited when they found out
who their pilot was. For his part, the pilot said that ferrying a sports team was a
fairly routine job for him, given that he's usually at the controls of “the biggest tour
bus in the world”.
Who was the pilot? Who were the passengers?
And the answer is…
Bruce Dickinson, Liverpool FC

Dr Joan Ransley, honorary lecturer in human nutrition at the University of Leeds,
while analysing something notes: "During and immediately after the Second World
War, British children ate well but austerely." In other words, they ate healthily but
not heartily.
Staples are found throughout: ham, bacon, eggs, the ubiquitous ginger beer and
lemonade, together with loaves of crusty bread and cakes and buns. But luxuries –
chocolate for example – don't find their way onto the menu until the postwar years.
A balanced diet and a structured approach to eating is depicted. Despite an
abundance of humbugs, toffees and ginger pop, when grouped into the five main food
categories (fruit and vegetable; meat and fish; dairy; starchy foods; high fat/sugar
foods), no one group outweighs another.
What is Ransley analysing?
And the answer is…
The food habits/diet of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five

Aris Kindt (an alias of Adriaan Adriaanszoon) was a petty thief
convicted for armed robbery and later sentenced to death by hanging. In
her 2014 novel, author and journalist Nina Siegal tells his life story,
based on documents about his criminal history that she discovered in the
Amsterdam city archives.
Set in one day in 1632, the novel focuses on Kindt, Flora, his pregnant
lover; Jan Fetchet, the curio dealer who acquires corpses and René
Descartes who was on quest to understand where the human soul
resides.
What was Siegal trying to capture the backstory of?
And the answer is…

For over two decades, Chris Toal, a qualified therapist has researched upon the
science of remedial deep tissue therapy. He studied something specific and said the
reason that it might have such an impact was because it centred on myofascia, the
name for the thin, but super tough, tissue that surrounds muscles. Like a gel and
semi solid under static conditions, this tissue moves easily when shaken, heated or
stressed - as happens during such a performance.
Unlike stretching, this wakes up the muscles, connects the proprioceptors on the
skins surface to the tissue underneath. It stimulates the body by increasing blood
pressure, suppresses the immune system and creates a burst of energy. This leads to
the mind getting into a fully alert challenged state, while the verbal form itself itself
opens up the airways and helps get the heart ready. Essentially, it is one of the most
effective ways to be at your peak.
What was Toal studying?
And the answer is…
The psychological impact of the Haka dance

Truman Capote spent a good deal of the 1950s in New York, specifically in Brooklyn,
writing Breakfast at Tiffany's. While here, he also wrote Brooklyn Heights: A
Personal Memoir, published in 1959. In it, he describes the various characters that
inhabited the suburb during the time - artists, photographers and the like.
He describes one incident in particular as follows:
“Know where they caught him? Right Here! smack on Fulton Street! Trapped him in
a building between David Semple’s fine-foods store and Frank Gambuzza’s television
repair shop. Frank, grinning as though he’d done the job himself, had his picture in
Life; so did the waitress at the Music Box Bar, the _______’s favorite watering hole.”
a) Whose capture did Capote document?
b) In what way was this incident revived in popular consciousness over the past
year?
And the answer is…
Rudolf Abel, Bridge of Spies

It occurred on the fourth day of the 2nd Test between New Zealand and England in
Christchurch in 1978. The characters involved were two of the most stubborn in the
game at the time - X and Y. After English captain Mike Brearley had broken his arm
and had to fly home, X took over the captaincy. It was a long-cherished dream for
him but he faced a tough job given his relationship with some team-mates was
strained. It deteriorated after X took over seven hours to make 77 in the first innings
of the first test.
In the second test, England took a lead of 183, but their second innings did not start
until the fourth afternoon. Quick runs were needed if they were to have enough time
to bowl the New Zealanders out. Y was promoted to No. 4 by vice-captain Bob Willis
with the aim of quick runs - and also with a specific order.
a) Who were X and Y?
B) What was the specific order given to Y?
And the answer is…
a) X- Geoff Boycott, Y- Ian Botham
b) Botham was asked to intentionally get Boycott run out,
which he did.
14.
While there is much speculation that the fictional character X is actually based on Y,
the author has denied these allegations repeatedly. This is despite the fact that she
had actually worked under Y as Y's personal assistant, for a period of 10 months,
which makes it much more likely that the book featuring Y is indeed a roman à clef
of the author's real life experience of working under someone who is famous for being
aloof and having a demanding personality. Other similarities between X and Y
include the fact that both have trouble remembering the names of people who work
for them, and that both are known for a fashion quirk: X who always accessorises
with a white Hermès scarf and Y who is often observed wearing sunglasses indoors.
ID X and Y.
And the answer is…
X- MIRANDA PRIESTLY FROM THE DEVIL
WEARS PRADA
Y IS VOGUE’S ANNA WINTOUR
15.
The __________ ________ : X in Theory and Practice is an essay by Christopher
Hitchens published in 1995. It is a critique of the work and philosophy of X and it
challenges the mainstream media's assessment of her charitable efforts.
The book's thesis, as summarized by one critic, was that “X is less interested in
helping the poor than in using them as an indefatigable source of wretchedness on
which to fuel the expansion of her fundamentalist Roman Catholic beliefs.”
a) Who was the subject of the essay?
b) What was the title of essay, something referring to what X had founded, but which
might throw up entirely different results when entered as a search term on Google?
And the answer is…
Mother Teresa, Missionary Position

In 1987, X produced a stage adaptation of his most famous work. This adaptation
was an open rebuke to the world famous 1971 screen adaptation. The contempt for
the 1971 adaptation is subtle in some places and blatant in others. X's '87 work
includes the final chapter of the original text, while the '71 work did not. Most
prominently, a stage direction at the end of Act Two of the stage adaptation reads “A
man bearded like Y comes on playing, in exquisite counterpoint, Z on a trumpet. He
is kicked off stage.”
Give me X, Y, the song Z and the work.

With his daughter Menaka next to him, Y stated in an interview a few years ago,
“Sorry to tell you, but X madam is a liar. A B isn’t her imagination. There have been
many such As in this field, starting from A C to A Keller. And Richard B was a
famous African-American in the field.”
“I can feel the weight of my grandfather on me. I’ve built a bridge between me and
the audience, to take them to another world altogether. All you need to do is take the
first step.”

Doune Castle is a medieval stronghold in the Stirling district of central Scotland. In
X's first novel, Waverley (1814), the protagonist is brought to Doune Castle by the
Jacobites. The novel describes the "gloomy yet picturesque structure", with its "half-
ruined turrets". The castle was used as a location in MGM's 1952 historical film Y
starring Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor, which was an adaptation of one of X's
most famous works.
Where we might have seen this castle the most is in a 1974 film, Z. The film's
producers had gained permission from the National Trust for Scotland to film scenes
at several of their Scottish castles. However, the National Trust later withdrew their
permission, leaving the producers with little time to find new locations. Instead, they
decided to use different parts of Doune Castle to depict the various fictional castles
in the film, relying on tight framing of shots to maintain the illusion.

In 1846, X was officially appointed as the ‘Surveyor for the District of Salem and
Beverly’. However, he lost this job due to the change of administration after the
presidential election of 1848. He returned to writing and published Y in 1850,
including a preface that refers to his three-year tenure in the Custom House and
makes several allusions to local politicians, who did not appreciate their treatment.
The screenplay of a 2010 teen comedy film starring Emma Stone was partially
inspired by Y.
X and his family moved to Massachusetts in 1850 where he became friends with Z. Z
had just read X's short story collection and his review of the collection was printed in
The Literary World. Z, who was composing A, wrote that these stories revealed a
dark side to X, "shrouded in blackness, ten times black". Y dedicated A to X: "In

Post 2005, the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology started to call
this the ____________ Syndrome. Dr. Muthulakshmi of the Critical Care Service
explained that it was invariably associated with severe physical abuse and neglect
during childhood, when the mind blots out the unbearably painful experience from
consciousness, by blanking out the memory.
Those affected by the syndrome were recorded as having ‘lost time’ and reported to
have found items in their homes not consciously purchased, notes in different
handwritings, evidence of unexplained activity and failure to recognize close friends
and relatives in their ‘alter’ state(s).
What was this Syndrome called?
• And the answer is…

Harry Chiti was a catcher who played in the major leagues from 1950-
1962, taking two years off in that span to fight in the Korean War. In
1962, the New York Mets, who were an expansion club that year decided
to trade by buying Chiti from the Cleveland Indians. The deal stated
that Chiti was traded to the Mets for a “player to be named later”.
Who was the player named later, in what was the first such deal in

In 1882, a partially paralyzed 62-year old X wrote to a friend to tell him of a recent
visitor Y to that home.
“He is a fine large handsome youngster,” X wrote of Y. And “he had the good sense to
take a great fancy to me.”
This meeting between the self-described “old rough” who revolutionized American
poetry and Y has been examined often in the intervening years, usually through the
lens of what is now called queer history and as an interesting moment in the history
of literature.
A portrait of himself that X gave Y (who was 27 years old then) after their meeting
appeared on his next book, 'Specimen Days & Collect', an assemblage of travel
diaries, nature writing, and Civil War reminiscences.

Researchers recently said they wanted to demonstrate the broader potential of
geographic profiling, a sophisticated form of statistical analysis used in criminology
to try and narrow down possible locations where a certain repeat offender might be
living. The academics selected 140 of these in London and Bristol and using publicly
available information, the researchers concluded that those locations were all places
lived in or frequented by Robin Gunningham.
The academic team included Dr Kim Rossmo of the Texas State University, a
criminologist and former detective who pioneered geoprofiling. In criminology, the
technique relies on the assumption that crime happens close to where the person
responsible lives. Legal intervention did not alter the research, which was published
in the Journal of Spatial Science after a short delay.
Which repeat offender were they trying to narrow down to?
• And the answer is…

This song, which was a paean to the inevitability of happiness was inspired by a
giant text installation (of the same name) by the artist Ugo Rondinone, which X used
to see every day riding her bike over Waterloo Bridge. X told Mojo magazine April
2012 about the rainbow-hued text: "It was plastered over the south Bank in London
for six months and I rode past it on my bike every day. It's a reference to the star
Sirius: when it was closest to the Earth, all the animals would get languid and
sleepy; when it moved away, they'd wake up. I've tried to get in touch with him to say

Bhupinder Singh Hooda claimed credit for this achievement, pointing out that four
years ago in Melbourne, the contribution had been negligible. Despite housing less
than 2% of the country's population and 1.37% of its land area, it managed to
produce 40% (15/38) of its victors, arguably because of the 350 newly built stadiums,
and the brand new academies for wrestling and kabaddi. The number is so high, in
fact, that if Hooda's success separated from the rest of the country, the table would
have pushed India down to fourth and looked like this: Australia, England, Canada,

for Best Original Song.
On Valentine's Day in 1985, X was arrested during a protest outside an embassy in
the United States and said that he was guilty of being a ''conscientious criminal''
against oppression.
Subsequently, X went on to accept the Academy award that year ''in the name of Y,'

Churchill Solitaire is a "devilishly difficult" version of the classic card game which
the man used to play to clear his mind in the humdrum of WWII. Churchill taught
the game to a young Belgian foreign office man named Andre de Staercke in 1943.
Thirty years later, De Staercke met the author of this piece while he was serving as
America's ambassador to NATO under Nixon. With the demise of Churchill and De
Staercke, this man realised that he was perhaps the last carrier of the game's great
legacy, and recently developed an app to popularise the game.
Who is this 83-year-old app-designer, given a nickname after another card game by

In George Rippey Stewart's 1941 novel Storm, he gives the storm which is the protagonist of
his story the name "_____". In 1947, Stewart wrote a new introduction for a reprint of the
book, and discussed the pronunciation of "_____": "The soft Spanish pronunciation is fine for
some heroines, but our _____ here is too big for any man to embrace and much too
boisterous." He went on to say, "So put the accent on the second syllable, and pronounce it
'rye'".
The success of Stewart's novel was one factor that motivated U.S. military meteorologists to
start the informal practice of giving women's names to storms in the Pacific and the North
Atlantic. Although Stewart's novel is set in 1935, the novel and its impact on meteorology
later inspired Lerner and Lowe to write a song for their play about the California gold rush,
and like Stewart, they too gave a wind storm the name _____, which is pronounced the same
way. The lines throughout the song end in feminine rhymes mostly using the sound /aɪ/,
echoing the stress pattern and vowel sound of the name _____.
What onomastic curiosity derives from Stewart's alternative pronunciation?

"I’m in Austin Texas in college, not even thinking about being an actor at this point. I go to

and you might be right for this part.’
“Well, sure enough I wake up the next morning and I go pick up this . Next thing I know,

And I tell myself, 'Wooderson's (his character) about four things: he's about cars, weed,

“I look around, where I am, well I'm in my 70's Chevelle. That's one. I've got Slater riding
shotgun, so I'm definitely getting high, that's two. And we've got Ted Nugent playing
Stranglehold on the eight-track, well that's three. At this point I hear over the intercom,

myself, ‘Buddy, you got three out of four. _______, ________, _______!’”

Who is this 83-year-old app-designer, given a nickname after another card game by
President Nixon in 1971, who said "He's a ruthless little bastard. You can be sure of
that."?

and Rhea Silvia appear before them in a blue and white scooter.
Tiberinus is described as handsome in an old fashioned manner, wearing high

every bit as exciting a life as X and Y, and had taken great delight when New York
newspapers began to identify them as icons of youth and success- enfant terribles of
the Jazz Age, so to speak.

Teenagers in the USSR during the early '50s were notoriously hooked on rock and
roll, and would apparently do anything to be able to listen to American music. Stalin

The rock and roll fans' response was to shun vinyl and produce "bone music".

They repurposed X-ray films to etch music onto them, cut them into disks and burnt a
hole in the center.

  • 6. 1. Highland Airways was an airline based in Inverness, Scotland which ceased trading in 2010 after failing to secure new investment. The Prestwick-built Jetstream 31, which had been owned by the airline had to be sold to pay off debts. Administrators PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) confirmed that the aircraft, registered as G-UIST was sold for a specific purpose which also led to employment and boosted the local economy of the Scottish Highlands by generating £1.1m. PwC partner Bruce Cartwright said: "There was real diversity in the notes of interest in purchasing the planes after the airline went out of business. This included film production firms, who appear to schedule activity years in advance. We never imagined that they would look for them via an administration." What use was G-UIST put to?

  • 8. 2. Beth Howard, a resident of Eldon, Iowa sits at her kitchen table and pulls back the curtain to peer at a group of youths with grim faces and dour portrayals taking pictures on her front lawn. "People seldom know that people live here, much less that there's someone watching them from the other side of the curtain," says Howard. The interior of the house is off-limits to visitors, but Howard's lease with the owner, the state historical society, includes a clause stating that she has to be nice to interlopers. Tourists sometimes tramp into the house, ignoring the sign that says "Private residence. Please do not disturb." At night, they'll train their headlights on the house. Then again, the rent is just $250 a month. Why has this house been famous since 1930?

  • 10. 3. In September last year, the University of New Hampshire started offering a new course on this. While the class explores how law and journalism impact sports in general, it has also had a few science tutorials to teach the students. “These scientists, who are all doctors, are going to answer all the questions you’ve been dying to know but I can’t answer because I’m not a scientist,” professor Michael McCann said to his students, many of whom were perched on the edge of their seats, trying to catch a glimpse of the props in the room. The three scientists were John Leonard, an MIT engineering professor, and UNH professors Michael Briggs, who teaches in the physics department, and Martin Wosnik, who teaches in the school of marine science and ocean engineering. The lessons learned have been invaluable for anyone pursuing a legal career or simply wanting to win an argument with friends. What were the scientists trying to show in class (or) what is the name of the course?
  • 11. 4. After it is done, each of them is immediately taken for a psychiatric evaluation. “The experience can be quite draining, so [the producers] want to make sure you don’t want to kill yourself — or someone else,” an on-set source reveals. “After that, they send you to this beautiful house where you can get anything you want: back rubs, nails done, hair cut. It is kind of like decompression before you go back into society.” What intense experience is this, which has led to editorial accusations of staging and dramatic license in the past?
  • 12. 5. This Victorian home is located about an hour outside of Pittsburgh in Fayette Country, Pennsylvania has now been put up on the market for $300,000. According to its listing, it has four bedrooms, one full bath, and sits on 1.76 acres. The three- story house also has a detached four-car garage and a pool. Scott and Barbara Lloyd, who bought the house in 1976, gave their permission for the place to be used for something fourteen years later. They're now retired and looking to downsize. What were the premises of the house used for?

  • 14. 6. This song, after release received an enthusiastic response from the residents of the US state of XY. It became the theme song of the XY University and has been performed at every home football pre-game show since 1972. Hillary Clinton quoted the song in the opening line of her speech following her massive win in the 2008 XY Democratic primary, stating: "You know, like the song says, 'It's ______ ______.'" In 2014, the XY Legislature approved a resolution to make this song the official state song of XY. Which song, and which state?

  • 33. 7. Operation Torch was the British-American invasion of French North Africa during the North African campaign of World War II. The Americans attacked at three different locations in French North Africa, one of the three being the landings at X because of its important port and the major administrative centers. X was an important strategic port during World War II and hosted the X Conference in 1943, in which Churchill and Roosevelt discussed the progress of the war. It was also the site of a large American air base, which was the staging area for all American aircraft for the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Why did this operation lead to something being moved from the spring of 1943 to November 26, 1942?
  • 34. And the answer is…
  • 35. One of the landings was at Casablanca, and the release for the movie was rushed to take advantage of the publicity during the invasion.
  • 36. 8. As a pilot for British charter airline Astraeus Airlines, he routinely flew unconventional clients around the world. In 2008, for example, he flew an RAF squadron back home after duty in Afghanistan. In October 2010, he took the controls of a Boeing 737 to fly a football team from John Lennon International Airport to a Europa League tie in Napoli. The match ended in a 0-0 draw, but the passengers said they were incredibly excited when they found out who their pilot was. For his part, the pilot said that ferrying a sports team was a fairly routine job for him, given that he's usually at the controls of “the biggest tour bus in the world”. Who was the pilot? Who were the passengers?
  • 37. And the answer is…
  • 39. 9. Dr Joan Ransley, honorary lecturer in human nutrition at the University of Leeds, while analysing something notes: "During and immediately after the Second World War, British children ate well but austerely." In other words, they ate healthily but not heartily. Staples are found throughout: ham, bacon, eggs, the ubiquitous ginger beer and lemonade, together with loaves of crusty bread and cakes and buns. But luxuries – chocolate for example – don't find their way onto the menu until the postwar years. A balanced diet and a structured approach to eating is depicted. Despite an abundance of humbugs, toffees and ginger pop, when grouped into the five main food categories (fruit and vegetable; meat and fish; dairy; starchy foods; high fat/sugar foods), no one group outweighs another. What is Ransley analysing?
  • 40. And the answer is…
  • 41. The food habits/diet of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five
  • 42. 10. Aris Kindt (an alias of Adriaan Adriaanszoon) was a petty thief convicted for armed robbery and later sentenced to death by hanging. In her 2014 novel, author and journalist Nina Siegal tells his life story, based on documents about his criminal history that she discovered in the Amsterdam city archives. Set in one day in 1632, the novel focuses on Kindt, Flora, his pregnant lover; Jan Fetchet, the curio dealer who acquires corpses and René Descartes who was on quest to understand where the human soul resides. What was Siegal trying to capture the backstory of?
  • 43.
  • 44. And the answer is…
  • 45. ANATOMY LESSON OF DR. NICOLAES TULP
  • 46. 11. For over two decades, Chris Toal, a qualified therapist has researched upon the science of remedial deep tissue therapy. He studied something specific and said the reason that it might have such an impact was because it centred on myofascia, the name for the thin, but super tough, tissue that surrounds muscles. Like a gel and semi solid under static conditions, this tissue moves easily when shaken, heated or stressed - as happens during such a performance. Unlike stretching, this wakes up the muscles, connects the proprioceptors on the skins surface to the tissue underneath. It stimulates the body by increasing blood pressure, suppresses the immune system and creates a burst of energy. This leads to the mind getting into a fully alert challenged state, while the verbal form itself itself opens up the airways and helps get the heart ready. Essentially, it is one of the most effective ways to be at your peak. What was Toal studying?
  • 47. And the answer is…
  • 48. The psychological impact of the Haka dance
  • 49. 12. Truman Capote spent a good deal of the 1950s in New York, specifically in Brooklyn, writing Breakfast at Tiffany's. While here, he also wrote Brooklyn Heights: A Personal Memoir, published in 1959. In it, he describes the various characters that inhabited the suburb during the time - artists, photographers and the like. He describes one incident in particular as follows: “Know where they caught him? Right Here! smack on Fulton Street! Trapped him in a building between David Semple’s fine-foods store and Frank Gambuzza’s television repair shop. Frank, grinning as though he’d done the job himself, had his picture in Life; so did the waitress at the Music Box Bar, the _______’s favorite watering hole.” a) Whose capture did Capote document? b) In what way was this incident revived in popular consciousness over the past year?
  • 50. And the answer is…
  • 52. 13. It occurred on the fourth day of the 2nd Test between New Zealand and England in Christchurch in 1978. The characters involved were two of the most stubborn in the game at the time - X and Y. After English captain Mike Brearley had broken his arm and had to fly home, X took over the captaincy. It was a long-cherished dream for him but he faced a tough job given his relationship with some team-mates was strained. It deteriorated after X took over seven hours to make 77 in the first innings of the first test. In the second test, England took a lead of 183, but their second innings did not start until the fourth afternoon. Quick runs were needed if they were to have enough time to bowl the New Zealanders out. Y was promoted to No. 4 by vice-captain Bob Willis with the aim of quick runs - and also with a specific order. a) Who were X and Y? B) What was the specific order given to Y?
  • 53. And the answer is…
  • 54. a) X- Geoff Boycott, Y- Ian Botham b) Botham was asked to intentionally get Boycott run out, which he did.
  • 55. 14. While there is much speculation that the fictional character X is actually based on Y, the author has denied these allegations repeatedly. This is despite the fact that she had actually worked under Y as Y's personal assistant, for a period of 10 months, which makes it much more likely that the book featuring Y is indeed a roman à clef of the author's real life experience of working under someone who is famous for being aloof and having a demanding personality. Other similarities between X and Y include the fact that both have trouble remembering the names of people who work for them, and that both are known for a fashion quirk: X who always accessorises with a white Hermès scarf and Y who is often observed wearing sunglasses indoors. ID X and Y.
  • 56. And the answer is…
  • 57. X- MIRANDA PRIESTLY FROM THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA Y IS VOGUE’S ANNA WINTOUR
  • 58. 15. The __________ ________ : X in Theory and Practice is an essay by Christopher Hitchens published in 1995. It is a critique of the work and philosophy of X and it challenges the mainstream media's assessment of her charitable efforts. The book's thesis, as summarized by one critic, was that “X is less interested in helping the poor than in using them as an indefatigable source of wretchedness on which to fuel the expansion of her fundamentalist Roman Catholic beliefs.” a) Who was the subject of the essay? b) What was the title of essay, something referring to what X had founded, but which might throw up entirely different results when entered as a search term on Google?
  • 59. And the answer is…
  • 61. ROUND III: WRITTEN VARIABLES 4 questions Points/blanks indicated in the slide

  • 90. 23. Researchers recently said they wanted to demonstrate the broader potential of geographic profiling, a sophisticated form of statistical analysis used in criminology to try and narrow down possible locations where a certain repeat offender might be living. The academics selected 140 of these in London and Bristol and using publicly available information, the researchers concluded that those locations were all places lived in or frequented by Robin Gunningham. The academic team included Dr Kim Rossmo of the Texas State University, a criminologist and former detective who pioneered geoprofiling. In criminology, the technique relies on the assumption that crime happens close to where the person responsible lives. Legal intervention did not alter the research, which was published in the Journal of Spatial Science after a short delay. Which repeat offender were they trying to narrow down to?
