The 160 survey respondents included eye care professionals of varied positions, including:

Pre-operative anti-infective use
73% reported instructing cataract patients to use their anti-infective drops prior to surgery:
Most popular brands? Vigamox (53%) and Zymar (33%)
Most common dosing regimen? qid (50%) and tid (24%) for “less than one week” prior to surgery (78%)

Pre-op steroid use?
73% of respondents reported that cataract patients are not instructed to use steroid drops during the days leading up to surgery
For those that do have patients using steroids pre-operatively, they most commonly (30%) reported use for less than one week.
52% say the drops are used qid
50% named Pred Forte their preferred brand and 44% named Omni-Pred

What about NSAIDs pre-op?
62% said yes! They do instruct patients to use NSAIDs pre-operatively
89% of them instructed patients to use for less than one week
qid use was most common at 24% with tid not far behind at 20%
Brands of choice were Nevanac at 34%, Acular/LS at 25% and Xibrom at 13%

Artificial Tears
26% of respondents reported instructing patients to use artificial tears in the days leading to surgery
61% of those reported PRN use for the number of days
77% reported PRN use when asked about the number of drops per day

Drops used the day of surgery?
66% of respondents said that they do instruct patients to use their drops the day of surgery
The regimens for day of surgery use were so varied that it was hard to find much common ground
The one consistency we did find is that the majority (65%) instructed patients to only use their drops in the morning prior to surgery. Those respondents did not mention instructing patients to use the drops the rest of the day or night after surgery

Post-op anti- infective use
98% said they do instruct patients to use anti-infective drops after surgery.
58% of those choose Vigamox, and 38% prefer Zymar.
According to this survey, patients are most often instructed to use their anti-infective drops for 1-2 weeks after surgery (69%). 19% tell patients to use the drops less than 1 week.
The most common regimen for number of drops per day was qid at 66%. tid use is instructed by 24% of our respondents

Post-op steroid use
98% of participants reported instructing patients to use steroid drops after cataract surgery
51% of those prefer Pred Forte, while 40% choose Omni-Pred
60% instruct patients to use their steroid drops for 3-4 weeks after surgery, 21% instruct use for 1-2 weeks, and 15% > 1 month
The most common number of drops per day was qid at 54%, with “taper” chosen 21% of the time and tid 17% thirdly

NSAID use post-op
88% of respondents reported instructing NSAID drops use after cataract surgery
The most popular brands were Nevanac (41%) and Acular/LS (36%)
41% of the respondents instruct the use of NSAID drops for 1-2 weeks after surgery, 32% for 3-4 weeks and 15% > 1 month
With regards to number of drops per day, the most common answer was qid at 45%, with tid at 27%, bid at 13% and “taper” at 9%.

Artificial Tears After Surgery
56% of participants said that they do instruct patients to use artificial tears after cataract surgery
The most commonly recommended brands were Systane (43%) and Optive (27%)
The most commonly recommended use was PRN for number of days and number of drops per day
