  • 1. 1 FOOD AND DIGESTION WE NEED FOOD TO LIVE • Food gives us the substances we need to grow and to stay healthy. • We get energy to walk or study.
  • 2. 2 WE NEED FOOD TO LIVE - Some food comes from animals, like milk. - Others, comes from plants like fruit and bread. - We also need water and salt, that do not come from plants or animals. FOOD GROUPS - We classfity food into five groups. - Grains gives us energy. -Vegetables gives us vitamines. - Fruit gives us vitamines to be healthy. - Milk gives us calcium to grow and… - Meat, fish and beans give us proteins…
  • 3. 3 A HEALTHY DIET - Our diet is made up of the things that we eat and drink. - We need to eat food from all the groups to stay healthy, this a balanced diet. HOW MUCH FOOD DO WE NEED? - The quantity of food we need depends on how old we are and how much physical exercise we do. - When we are growing, we need more of some types of food. For example, we need milk because it has calcium. - If we do a lot of exercise, we need to eat more.
  • 4. 4 FOOD AND MEALS • There are four meals that we eat during the day: breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. This is so we have enough food to give us energy through the day. • It is very important to have a good breakfast. THE DIGESTIVE SISTEM - The digestive system is made up the following organs: the mouth, oesophagus stomach, intestines and anus. - Food enters our body through our mouth.
  • 5. 5 THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM • Our esophagus is a tube between our mouth and stomach. • Our stomach is like a bag. THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM • Our intestine is a long tube. • At the end of the large intestine is the anus.
  • 6. 6 THE STAGES OF DIGESTION 1. Digestion begins in the mouth: - Our teeth cut and chew the food. - Our tongue mixes the food with salive. - Then food goes down. THE STAGES OF DIGESTION 2. In the stomach the food is mixed with a liquid (gastric juice.)
  • 7. 7 THE STAGES OF DIGESTION • 3. In the small intestine, the food is divided into the substances our body needs. • These substances pass from the intestine to the blood. THE STAGES OF DIGESTION • 4. Parts we cannot use go into the large intestine. They are transforme into faeces and expelled through the anus. • Digestion takes time (2 hours). We should wait before swim or run.
