Learning space - Presentation Transcript

  1. CREATION OF HIGH QUALITY LEARNING SPACES Pedro Silva [email_address] Luís Borges Gouveia L earning S pace ED-MEDIA 2008
  2. Main Objective This research project is the result of a set of experiences to understand the issues involved in the use of the virtual environments in higher education institutions. Problem of the investigation The need of a referential system to guide the higher education institutions in the performance of virtual learning environments and in its adjustment from the physical teaching spaces The main interest of the project is try to find and test a set of factors that maximize the creation of high quality learning spaces, pliable and sustainable to the future needs of the students.
  3. The Enviroment
    • STUDENTS
    • Preparing the
    • New Generation of Students (Net Generation)
    • - Digital
    • Connected
    • W ant to create and learn at the same time
are face to face (f2f) with a new teaching reality KNOWLEDGE SOURCES Students can access to that contents and study by themselves, developing therefore individual and group skills Study by themselves in any place with Internet and the also can, if they have questions, use the email to clear up all doubts and solve problems with their tutors THE TECHNOLOGY The technology changes affect the teaching and learning processes and the places they are possible
  4. Looking back to Look forward Old Space Many universities have insufficient or inappropriate learning spaces; they are too small, very dark or cold, made in the wrong places, etc. The s tudents dont talk, and there are encoraged to work allon. New Space The new learning space should be able to motivate learners and promote learning as an activity, support collaborative as well as formal learning.
  5. Learning Space
    • “ Learning space is under re-evaluation and redifinition ”
    • A learning space is much more than a classroom. It can be any place where the learning process is possible: home, halls, congress rooms, cafés, etc. And, of course, the classrooms.
    • Spaces are by themselves changing agents; if we modify teaching spaces we change the kind of learning.
    • Understanding the university spaces is an important factor to understand the way they function, not only what concerns the teaching and learning method but also how the involving space should be planned.
  6. How to improve Space ?
    • The classrooms of a higher education institution are, in greater number, used by different departments , different teachers , with different needs .
    • So it is important consider some aspects:
    • - How will the space be used by other in the future?
    • - The physical, technological and program needs
    • - The shape of the classroom will be controlled by a presentation?
    • - The room will have a front area where the teacher will be teaching?
  7. Guiding Principles
    • A learning space should support a diversity of learning styles.
    • At the different times learning can be a social as well as an independent activity,
    • A learning space must be versatile and attractive
    • The space must be maintained continuously and the technology must be present everywhere
    • The resources must be allocated for learning spaces and used whit effectively.
    • must take into account styles of teaching needs for technologies and other aspects that demand specialized spaces.
  8. Case Study
    • In this case, the challenge for this investigation was to create several learning environments that would progressively draw educators from traditional classroom to innovative learning environments.
    • The University Fernando Pessoa (UFP) illustrate
    • how an experimental
    • teaching space has been
    • created within the
    • constraints of a existing
    • structure
  9. Case Study
    • The objective of this study is to prove that:
    • The learning space’s arrangement and organization influences the quality and the way we collaborate, interact, share and build knowledge
    • We wanted to demonstrate the environments we put people in when we’re asking them to learn things.
    • The space supports three learning styles:
    • Traditional learning environments
    • Social learning spaces
    • Collaborative learning environment
  10. Traditional learning environments
  11. Social learning spaces
  12. Collaborative learning environment
  13. CONCLUSION
    • The teaching and learning process won’t be the same it was for the last10 years
    • The use of technology change the teaching and learning process
    • In order to provide appropriate space to teach and learn it is necessary more than a simple space. The educational activities are organic and flowing
  14. CONCLUSION
    • There is lot to do in this area. Many people investigate this area but the changing of physical learning spaces requires many challenges and it presents so many opportunities that we can’t even imagine.
    • We cannot find the right learning place but the challenge is try to get there.
  15. Thanks
