Para el primer aterrizaje lunar, El Mare Tranquilitatis era el sitio elegido porque ser un área relativamente lisa y llana. Chronology Of Major Events In Manned Space Flight And In Project Apollo, 1957-1975 1957 October: The Soviet Union placed the first artificial earth satellite (Sputnik) into orbit. 1958 April: The Air Force contracted with the Yerkes Observatory, University of Chicago, to produce a new lunar photographic atlas. The Air Force published a development plan for its manned space program, which included two exploratory man-in-space projects, a lunar reconnaissance mission and a manned lunar landing and return; the plan envisioned completion of the program in seven years at a cost of $1.5 billion. June: The Air Force contracted with Rocketdyne to design a single-chamber rocket engine burning kerosene and liquid oxygen and producing 1 to 1.5 million pounds of thrust. July: President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 (P.L. 85-568) establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. October: The Special Committee on Space Technology, created in January 1958 and chaired by H. Guyford Stever of MIT, reported its recommendations: development of both clustered- and single-engine boosters of million- pound thrust; vigorous attack on the problems of sustaining man in the space environment; development of lifting reentry vehicles; research on high-energy propellant systems for launch vehicle upper stages; and evaluation of existing boosters and upper stages followed by intensive development of those promising greatest utility. November: A Space Task Group (STG) was organized at Langley Research Center to implement NASA's first manned satellite project (Mercury). Robert R. Gilruth was named project manager. 1959 January: In a report of the staff of the House Select Committee on Astronautics and Space Exploration entitled "The Next Ten Years in Space, 1959-1969," Wernher von Braun of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency predicted a manned flight around the moon within 8 to 10 years and a manned lunar landing and return a few years later. NASA and industry officials envisioned similar progress. March: The first F-1 engine was successfully test-fired by Rocketdyne, producing more than one million pounds of thrust. April: NASA announced the selection of seven pilots for the Mercury program. NASA created a Research Steering Committee on Manned Space Flight. Over the next several months this committee examined long-term human-in-space problems to recommend future missions and coordination of research programs at the NASA centers. At its May 25-26 meeting the committee recommended the manned lunar landing as a focal point for studies in propulsion, vehicle configuration, structure, and guidance requirements, since a lunar landing would constitute an end objective that did not have to be justified in terms of its contribution to a more useful goal. November: STG appointed a panel to study preliminary design of a multiperson spacecraft for a circumlunar mission, conduct mission analyses, and plan a test program. 1960 January: NASA presented its ten-year plan to Congress, calling for a pro' gram leading to manned circumlunar flight and a permanent earth-orbiting space station to start in 1965-1967 and a manned lunar landing some time beyond 1970. Cost estimates for the plan ran to $1.5 billion annually for five years. February: NASA approved Project Ranger, a project to send an unmanned, hard-landing spacecraft to the moon to relay television pictures of the lunar surface to earth during the final stages of its flight. March: The Army Ballistic Missile Agency's Development Operations Division at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama, headed by Wernher von Braun, was transferred to NASA as the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. April-May: STG developed guidelines for the advanced manned spacecraft program, including detailed propulsion and spacecraft requirements. May: A meeting on space rendezvous was held at Langley Research Center to discuss the problems of bringing two spacecraft together in space. NASA began work on a project (later named Surveyor ) to send a soft-landing spacecraft to the moon to provide scientific and engineering data on the lunar surface. July: The House Committee on Science and Astronautics urged NASA to intensify its efforts to send humans to the moon and back "in this decade." In the committee's view, NASA's ten-year plan did not go far enough and the space agency was not pressing forward with enough energy. July: The name "Apollo" was approved for the advanced manned space flight program. NASA held its first NASA-Industry Program Plans Conference in Washington to brief industrial management on the overall space program. George M. Low, chief of NASA's Manned Space Flight program, stated that circumlunar flight and earth-orbiting missions would be carried out before 1970, leading eventually to a manned lunar landing and a permanent space station in earth orbit. September: NASA issued a formal request for proposals for six-month feasibility studies for advanced manned spacecraft, to define a system fulfilling STG guidelines, formulate a plan for implementing the program, identify areas requiring long lead-time research and development, and estimate the total cost of the program. In October proposals were received from 14 companies, and in November contracts were awarded to Convair/Astronautics Division of General Dynamics Corp., General Electric Company, and The Martin Company. November: A program of detailed studies of lunar geology was undertaken by the U.S. Geological Survey, funded by NASA. STG proposed to organize a number of Technical Liaison Groups to coordinate the activities of NASA centers in research for Apollo. 1961 January: A meeting of the Space Exploration Program Council discussed the manned lunar landing project, with emphasis on three methods of conducting the mission: direct ascent, rendezvous of spacecraft in earth orbit, and rendezvous in lunar orbit. It was decided that all three methods should be explored thoroughly. The Council established a committee headed by George M. Low to define the elements of the project insofar as possible. February: The Instrumentation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was selected to conduct a six- month study of a navigation and guidance system for the Apollo spacecraft. March: The Space Science Board of the National Academy of Sciences recommended that "scientific exploration of the moon and planets should be clearly stated as the ultimate objective of the U.S. space program for the forseeable future." April: The USSR launched a five-ton spacecraft ( Vostok I ) carrying Major Yuri A. Gagarin on a one-orbit, 108- minute flight. May: STG proposed a new NASA development center to manage the development of manned spacecraft and projects. The United States launched its first human into space, Lt. Cmdr. Alan B. Shepard, Jr., who rode a Mercury spacecraft ( Freedom 7 ) on a parabolic flight path 116.5 miles high and landed 320 miles down range. Final reports of the six-month feasibility studies for advanced manned spacecraft were submitted to STG by the three contractors. President John F. Kennedy addressed Congress on "urgent national needs," which included new long-range goals for the American space program. Kennedy expressed his belief that the nation should adopt the goal, "before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth." He requested additional appropriations of $611 million for NASA and DoD for fiscal 1962. NASA appointed a committee (Lundin committee) to study all possible approaches for accomplishing a manned lunar landing in the period 1967-1970 and to make rough estimates of costs and schedules. July: Twelve companies were invited to submit proposals for the Apollo spacecraft. A detailed statement of work, based on contractor and NASA design studies, was provided for a three-phase program terminating in a lunar landing. NASA and DoD created a Large Launch Vehicle Planning Group to study development of large launch vehicles for the national space program. August: NASA selected the Instrumentation Laboratory of MIT to develop the guidance and navigation system for the Apollo Spacecraft. September: After a study of several locations around the country, NASA selected a site near Houston, Texas, for its new development center for manned spacecraft. The center would design, develop, and test new manned spacecraft, train astronauts, and operate the control center for manned space missions. In October the Space Task Group, still based at Langley, was formally redesignated as the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC); personnel would move to Houston starting in 1962. October: John C. Houbolt and others at Langley Research Center presented to the Large Launch Vehicle Planning Group a study on the use of lunar-orbit rendezvous in a manned lunar landing. November: After evaluation of proposals from five companies, NASA selected the Space and Information Division of North American Aviation, Inc., Downey, California, to design and build the Apollo spacecraft. December: MSC announced a new manned program using a two-man version of the Mercury spacecraft, which would test techniques of rendezvous in earth orbit. 1962 February: The first American to orbit the earth, Lt. Col. John H. Glenn, Jr., USMC, completed three orbits in a Mercury spacecraft and returned safely to earth. February-June: Several groups within NASA were intensively studying the various modes of going to the moon (direct ascent, rendezvous in earth orbit, rendezvous in lunar orbit). The third method required a separate spacecraft to detach itself, land on the moon, and return to lunar orbit to rendezvous with the Apollo spacecraft. March: At the request of the Office of Manned Space Flight, American Telephone & Telegraph established a group called Bellcomm, Inc., to provide independent analysis of systems and problems in the manned space flight program. For the duration of Apollo, Bellcomm performed many services, including advice on selection of landing sites, for OMSF. July: NASA Headquarters announced that the lunar-orbit rendezvous mode had been selected for the manned lunar landing project and that requests for proposals would be issued for the second spacecraft (the "lunar excursion module"). MSC invited 11 firms to submit proposals for the lunar excursion module. Nine companies responded; in November NASA selected the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Company to build the module. August: A summer study conducted by the Space Science Board at the State University of Iowa examined the state of NASA's space research program and made recommendations concerning future efforts. Many scientists expressed objections to Apollo (which was not specifically on their agenda), but the study cautiously endorsed the program's scientific goals. September: A second group of nine test-pilot astronauts was selected for the manned space flight program. November: MSC released sketches of the space suit assembly and portable lifesupport system to be used on the lunar surface. December: A contract was awarded for construction of a Vertical Assembly Building at NASA's Merritt Island Launch Area, Kennedy Space Center. The $100-million structure would provide space for assembling four Saturn V launch vehicles simultaneously. 1963 February: The President's budget request for fiscal 1964 included $5.712 billion for NASA. $1.207 billion was for Apollo - almost a threefold increase over the previous year. April: Preliminary plans for Apollo scientific instruments were completed. Emphasis was placed on experiments that promised maximum return for the least weight and complexity and were man-oriented and compatible with weight and volume available in the spacecraft. Experiments would be selected after evaluation of proposals from outside scientists. May: The Mercury project ended with the 34-hour, 22-orbit flight of astronaut L. Gordon Cooper, Jr., in the spacecraft Faith 7 . August: NASA Headquarters approved the Lunar Orbiter project, which would use unmanned spacecraft to take detailed photographs of the lunar surface to be used in selecting landing sites for Apollo. September: Dr. George E. Mueller became Associate Administrator for Manned Space Flight, replacing D. Brainerd Holmes. October: Headquarters sent MSC some general guidelines for scientific investigations of the moon. Principal scientific activity was expected to include comprehensive observation of lunar phenomena, collection of geologic samples, and emplacement of monitoring equipment. October: Fourteen more test pilots were selected as astronauts. November: A Manned Space Science Division was established in the Office of Space Science and Applications (OSSA), NASA Headquarters, to coordinate the efforts of OSSA and the Office of Manned Space Flight in developing scientific experiments for Apollo. MSC's Space Environment Division recommended 10 specific areas on the moon for evaluation as landing sites for Apollo. These sites and others would be photographed by Lunar Orbiter, after which some would be selected as targets for Surveyor, a project to land unmanned spacecraft on the moon and study the surface. President Lyndon B. Johnson announced that NASA's Launch Operations Center at Cape Canaveral (Atlantic Missile Range) would be designated the John F. Kennedy Space Center. December: An ad hoc group working on Apollo experiments recommended the principal scientific objectives of the program: examination of the surface around the landed spacecraft, geological mapping, investigation of the moon's interior (with instruments), studies of the lunar atmosphere, and radio astronomy from the surface. 1964 March: NASA's Office of Space Science and Applications (OSSA) began organizing groups of scientists to assist in more specific definition of the scientific objectives of Apollo. Outside scientists were called upon to propose experiments in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, biology, and atmospheric science. April: NASA enlisted the aid of the National Academy of Sciences in preparing a plan to recruit scientists for training as astronauts. The first flight of an unmanned Apollo spacecraft was launched from Kennedy Space Center, demonstrating the compatibility of the spacecraft and the launch vehicle. OSSA announced opportunities for scientists to fly experiments on manned space missions, including the lunar landing missions. The NASA Administrator and the Surgeon General agreed to form an Interagency Committee on Back Contamination to define requirements for biological isolation and testing of material returned from the moon and to advise on the construction and operation of a quarantine facility for samples and astronauts. June: Six scientists were selected for training as NASA astronauts. Two were qualified pilots; the other four were sent to Air Force flight training school before beginning astronaut training. July: OMSF established an Apollo Site Selection Board to work with OSSA, MSC, and Bellcomm in choosing the sites where Apollo missions would land on the moon. The Space Science Board convened a Summer Study at Woods Hole, Mass., to recommend directions for future space research. The agenda included manned exploration of the moon and planets. Conferees drew up a list of 15 questions that should determine the course of lunar research. Following the Woods Hole sessions, another group met at Falmouth, Mass., to formulate specific recommendations for the Apollo and related unmanned projects. August: Three finns were awarded six-month contracts to design prototypes of an Apollo lunar surface experiments package, which would be left on the moon and would return data by telemetry over a period of time. September: Meeting with MSC scientists, Public Health Service physicians insisted on rigorous quarantine of astronauts and lunar samples following each lunar mission. December: Two Gemini spacecraft performed the first space rendezvous, maneuvering to a separation distance of one foot with no difficulty. 1966 February: OSSA selected the experiment complement for the Apollo lunar surface experiments package (ALSEP). The first Apollo spacecraft, a test version of the command and service module, was launched from Cape Canaveral on a two-stage Saturn 1-B rocket. March: The Gemini VIII spacecraft performed a rendezvous with an unmanned target vehicle, then docked with it - the first accomplishment of this critical procedure. The mission was aborted soon afterwards when a small thruster malfunctioned. NASA Headquarters selected the Bendix Corporation to build the lunar surface experiments package. May: Surveyor I , the first instrumented spacecraft designed to soft-land on the moon and return scientific data, landed in Oceanus Procellarum. August: Lunar Orbiter I , the first of five photographic satellites to be launched in the following 12 months, returned detailed photographs of nine primary and seven alternate Apollo landing sites. Contracts were let for the first two phases of construction of the lunar receiving laboratory at the Manned Spacecraft Center. December: MSC created a Science and Applications Directorate to manage the scientific activities of the center, removing this responsibility from the Engineering and Development Directorate. 1967 January: A Lunar Missions Planning Board was established at MSC. A flash fire in Apollo command module 012 during preflight simulations at Cape Canaveral killed all three of the astronauts inside. Investigation of the cause of this tragedy by NASA and by Congress revealed serious shortcomings in the design of the spacecraft and management of manufacturing, testing, and manned simulations. Progress in the lunar landing program was drastically slowed; it was later estimated that the fire delayed the first lunar landing by 18 months. February: MSC announced selection of a scientist, Dr. Wilmot N. Hess, of Goddard Space Flight Center, to head its new Science and Applications Directorate. March: The Office of Space Science and Applications released the names of 110 principal investigators whose proposals for scientific research on the lunar samples had been accepted. Eleven scientists were selected for astronaut training, bringing the total number of scientist-astronauts to 15. May: Prime and backup crews were named for Apollo 7, the first mission to fly after the fire. No launch date was announced, but assignment of crews indicated NASA's confidence that problems uncovered by the fire were on the way to solution. July: Construction of the lunar receiving laboratory was completed and work was under way to install its specialized scientific equipment. August: MSC named P. R. Bell, a radiation physicist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to head the lunar receiving laboratory. Bell would report to MSC's Director of Science and Applications. Wilmot Hess convened a group of NASA and academic scientists at the University of California at Santa Cruz to prepare more detailed plans for lunar exploration based on current expectations for lunar missions. At the end of the conference Hess named a Group for Lunar Exploration Planning to work continuously with MSC in defining the scientific aspects of Apollo missions. September: A Lunar Sample Preliminary Examination Team and a Lunar Sample Analysis Planning Team, both including outside and NASA scientists, were created to assist the staff of the Lunar Receiving Laboratory in the examination and apportionment of lunar samples. November: The first test flight of a complete Saturn V was successfully launched from NASA's new facilities at Kennedy Space Center and completed without significant anomalies. December: OMSF established a Lunar Exploration Office within the Apollo Program Office, merging several program units concerned with lunar exploration. A Systems Development group staffed from OMSF would direct hardware development; a Lunar Science group staffed from OSSA would approve operating plans and scientific objectives, payloads, and principal investigators for specific missions. During the year: The Interagency Committee on Back Contamination worked out procedures for quarantine and release of lunar astronauts and samples and defined a biological test program to search for extraterrestrial organisms. NASA and the National Academy of Sciences worked to establish a center for research on lunar and planetary samples adjacent to the Manned Spacecraft Center. The center, to be managed by a consortium of universities, would be the organization through which interested researchers could gain access to the lunar materials for scientific work and would provide office space and other support for visiting scientists. 1968 January: The lunar module was given its first test (unmanned) in an earth-orbiting mission. August: Plans were set in motion to fly a circumlunar mission on the second manned Apollo flight. In view of problems in building the instruments and constraints appearing in mission planning, OMSF decided not to fly the lunar surface experiments package on the first lunar landing mission. Instead, a simplified set of instruments (a laser reflector and a passive seismometer) would be developed for the first mission and the more extensive set currently in development would be flown later. October: Apollo 7, the first manned flight of the Apollo command module, was launched for an 11-day earth-orbital test. All primary objectives of the flight were met. An operational readiness inspection of the lunar receiving laboratory was conducted and numerous discrepancies were noted. A 10-day simulation of LRL operations similarly uncovered many shortcomings in equipment and procedures. December: The first flight of a manned mission on a Saturn V was launched on December 21. Apollo 8 flew to the moon, completed 10 orbits, and returned safely to earth on December 27 . While in lunar orbit the crew made numerous visual and photographic observations of potential landing sites. During the year: The Apollo Site Selection Board, working with the Group for Lunar Exploration Planning and Bellcomm, selected five sites as alternatives for the first lunar landing mission. Work continued into 1969 to produce and refine a list from which sites for subsequent exploration missions would be chosen. 1969 March: Apollo 9 checked out manned operation of the lunar module, including rendezvous procedures, in a successful 10-day mission in earth orbit. May: Apollo 10 carried out all phases of a lunar landing mission except the final descent and landing. The lunar module descended to 50,000 feet ( 15,000 meters) above the lunar surface, visually verified the approach to the primary landing site for the first landing, and returned to lunar orbit to rendezvous with the command module. OMSF authorized the Marshall Space Flight Center to proceed with development of a manned lunar roving vehicle capable of carrying two astronauts several kilometers from their landed lunar module. The vehicle would be used on the later Apollo exploration missions. July: Apollo successfully achieved its primary goal with the landing of the lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility on July 20 and the successful completion of Apollo 11 on July 24. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin spent 2.5 hours on the lunar surface, collected some 50 pounds (23 kg.) of lunar rocks and dust, and emplaced a passive seismometer and a laser retroreflector. July-August: The Apollo 11 samples were brought to the lunar receiving laboratory, examined, and prepared for issuance to outside scientists. After a three-week stay, the crew was certified free of any biological contamination and released. August: NASA Headquarters approved a package of experiments for remote sensing of the moon, to be flown in the Apollo service module on missions 12 through 20. September-November: Lunar samples were released for scientific examination by principal investigators. October: NASA awarded a contract to the Boeing Company to build the lunar roving vehicle. November: Apollo 12 performed the first precision landing (within 1 km. of a preselected spot) at a site in Oceanus Procellarum near the spacecraft Surveyor III . In two surface excursions (more than 7% hours spent outside the lunar module) the astronauts emplaced the first complete ALSEP instrument package, collected almost 75 pounds (34 kg.) of samples, and removed several parts from the Surveyor for analysis. 1970 January: The Lunar Science Institute adjacent to the Manned Spacecraft Center was officially dedicated. Detailed reports on the analysis of samples from Apollo 11 were presented at a Lunar Science Conference in Houston, the first of a series of annual conferences on lunar (and later planetary) science. Budget restrictions and the need to get on with post-Apollo development forced NASA to cancel Apollo 20 and stretch out the remaining seven missions to six-month intervals. April: Apollo 13, launched on April 11, was aborted two days later when an oxygen tank containing an undetected defect exploded. Mission Control teams devised emergency procedures to conserve oxygen and electrical power, and the spacecraft and crew were brought back safely to earth on April 17 after looping around the moon. An investigation board concluded that the explosion resulted from a highly unlikely combination of circumstances that were traceable to human oversight. September: Two more missions, Apollo 15 and 19, were canceled because of budget cuts. The remaining four missions were designated Apollo 14, 15, I6 and 17. 1971 January: Apollo 14 landed at a site of prime scientific interest, the Fra Mauro Formation. During two excursions to the lunar surface the astronauts emplaced a second set of scientific instruments and collected some 92 pounds (40 kg.) of samples, but failed to reach a crater that had been one of their primary objectives. The orbiting CSM carried out considerable photography during the mission, including photography of a landing site proposed for a future mission ("bootstrap" photography). April: On the recommendation of the Interagency Committee on Back Contamination, NASA discontinued the practice of quarantining returned lunar samples and astronauts. No evidence of viable organisms on the moon had been produced on three lunar landing missions. July: Apollo 15 carried the first extended lunar module and the first lunar roving vehicle to the moon. The mission landed near Mount Hadley and Hadley Rille and stayed almost 67 hours on the surface - twice as long as any prior mission. The astronauts made three trips from their lunar module, emplaced the third set of experiments (including a seismometer that completed a three-site seismic network on the moon), and drove the "rover" a total distance of 17 1/2 miles (28 km.). The orbiting CSM carried the first scientific instrument module (SIM), which housed sensors that recorded data from the moon's surface. A moon-circling subsatellite was launched to measure particles and fields in the lunar environment. Neil A. Armstrong Comandante Misión Apollo 11 “ El Enigma” Mar de la Tranquilidad, 20 de Julio de 1969 Neil Armstrong ante los ojos del mundo, tal vez, es el único hombre que camino sobre la superficie de la Luna. Todo el mundo recuerda su nombre, muchos al recordar este histórico evento recuerdan que estaba haciendo y donde estaban observando este primer paseo en la Luna. Aldrin vive el Laguna Bech, California, es uno de los futuristas más reconocidos del mundo, es presidente de Starcraft Enterprise. Aldrin se ha dedicado a la difusión del programa espacial, ha escrito tres libros; en 1974 escribió “Retrun to the Earth” (Regreso a la Tierra) una autobiografía donde expone al mundo como fue su difícil transición después de abandonar NASA y la Fuerza Aérea. En este libro habla de como el cayo en el alcoholismo y en una serie de depresiones, como pudo hacer para superarlas y seguir adelante con su vida. En 1989 escribió “Man Form Earth” (Hombres de la Tierra) este libro era una vision del drama humano durante los primeros años de la exploración al espacio. Mas tarde en 1995 Aldrin escribe su primer libro de ciencia ficción “The Tíbet Encounter”. Algo que el publico en general desconoce es que Aldrin fue uno de los productores de la Película Toy Story y que el personaje Buzz Lightyear fue moldeado como su alterego. Saturno V , éste es el cohete más poderoso fabricado por el hombre, su altura de 111 metros lo hace verse imponente, algunos lo consideraban la pirámide tecnológica del siglo XX. La nave constaba de tres etapas, en el tope de la tercera (S-IVB) se encontraba la nave Apolo, conformada por el Módulo de Comando y Servicio ( CSM ) y el Módulo Lunar ( LM ). En la punta del cohete viajaban los astronautas, aquí se encontraba el CSM , detrás de éste, en un compartimiento especial se encontraba el LM . Éste no sería liberado hasta que los astronautas se encontraran en camino a la Luna. El conjunto del Saturno V/Apolo, mas el combustible, pesaba unas 2.913 toneladas para el momento del despegue. El Saturno V consumiría 4.535 Kg por segundo de combustible (kerosene y oxígeno liquido), y el empuje de la nave sería de unas 3.410.000 Kilogramos. El gigantesco Saturno estaba condenado a desaparecer poco a poco, este se iría desarmado a medida de que las etapas fuesen consumiendo y el cohete ganando altura. A una altura de 67 Km. la primera etapa S-IC , habría cumplido su función, sería desechada. La segunda ( S-II ), segundos después comenzaría a funcionar hasta alcanzar los 186 Km. Finalmente se encendería la tercera etapa ( S-IVB ) y los astronautas entrarían en órbita terrestre. Después de verificar que todos los sistemas estuviesen en orden la tercera etapa pondría a la nave Apolo y a los astronautas en ruta de Inserción Lunar ( TLI ). Una vez en camino se procedió a realizar la maniobra de extracción del LM y se programó a la tercera etapa, en ruta para impactar contra la superficie de la Luna. The knees, elbows and shoulders were protected by Chromel-R. On the left upper arm, a pocket for pens and penlights is stitched. These visors and shades are adjustable. lunar overshoe Lunar overshoe was made from the same material with ITMG. Metal-woven fabric or Chromel-R forms the outer shell of the boots to resist high lunar surface temperatures. Then silicone rubber sole was consisted. This boots are slip-on assemblies put on over the ITMG. pressure glove & extravehicular glove Two type of gloves, 'Intravehicular:IV' and 'Extravehicular:EV' are provided for each PGA. This glove were formed to fit each crewman's hand. Pressure glove is made from one layer rubber. and outer gauntlet and palm restraint system is added out of this. Extravehicular glove was worn over the pressure glove. This is covered by Metal-woven fabric or Chromel-R, and the fingertips are fitted with silicone rubber caps. This outer glove extends over the pressure glove - TLSA juncture. PLSS:back pack A life-support system for APOLLO is approximately 26kg in weight. and called Apollo Portable Life Support System (PLSS). Oxygen was supply from this System then keep astronaut's life for about seven hours continuously. 1.05 pound oxygen was housed in 46.6 square ibch tank with 900 psi. Oxygen was supply from Inlet gas connectors to helmet directly with temperature of 7.2 - 10 degree Celsius (45 - 50 degree Fahrenheit). And directed through ducts to the exhaust gas connectors with temperature of 26.6 - 29.4 degree Celsius (80 - 85 degree Fahrenheit). The impurities in the exhaust gas are removed by PLSS, then used for breathe again. It passes through a canister containing deactivated charcoal and lithium hydroxide, which absorbs the carbon dioxide and purifies the gas. Liquid Cooling Garment (LCG) is also donned under the space suit. It consists of a nylon Spandex material which supports a network of Tygon tubing through which water from the PLSS. Water or coolant is put through from PLSS, absorb body temperature, refrigerated in PLSS again. Two 16.8 volt battery provided electrical power. These battery were 4 pound weight each. The upper part of PLSS houses emergency oxygen tank and communication unit. Astronaut can extend life time for 30 minutes with this emergency oxygen tank. A life-support system used by SkyLab project was called Skylab Astronaut Life Support Assembly (ALSA). REMOTE CONTROL UNIT(RCU) Astronaut wore this REMOTE CONTROL UNIT on his chest for control PLSS, communication system, electric power system. All equipments include PLSS were controled by this RCU.

Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin y Michael Collins son los protagonistas de la primera expedición humana hacia otro cuerpo celeste. La odisea de la Apolo 11 comenzó el 16 de julio de 1969, en una mañana clara, donde miles de personas se encontraban en los alrededores de Centro Espacial John F. Kennedy ( KSC ), conocido también como Cabo Cañaveral, en el centro de Florida, USA. Tomó ocho años y unos mil millones de dólares convertir la isla silvestre de Merritt en el KSC , base que había sido el centro de lanzamientos de los programas Mercury y Gemini. Con el lanzamiento de Apolo 11, el KSC cumpliría el objetivo, para el que había sido creado, la puesta del primer hombre sobre la Luna. En el instante en que el sol aparecía sobre el Atlántico, la tripulación del Apolo 11 se encontraba desayunando con el típico menú de un astronauta antes de su vuelo. Carne, huevo, tocino, café y jugo de naranja acompañando de rebanada de torta decorada con el emblema de la misión . Mientras esto ocurría, unos 3.500 periodistas de casi todas las naciones del mundo, reportaban al mundo en evento más importante del siglo XX. Nunca antes el ser humano había podido presenciar un suceso de esta naturaleza por televisión, se estima que una de cada cuatro personas del planeta presenciaron la caminata del hombre en la Luna. La televisión se convertiría en el gran aliado del programa espacial norteamericano. Una vez finalizado el desayuno, los astronautas comenzaron el proceso de colocarse los pesados trajes espaciales. Estos eran de color blanco, en el centro del pecho llevaban el nombre del astronauta, a la izquierda el escudo de NASA y a la derecha el emblema del Apolo 11. Los trajes poseían 15 capas de tejidos espaciales (teflón, plástico y una tela especial conocida como Super Beta) estos mantendrían al astronauta en una temperatura agradable, pero lo más importante es que serían su atmósfera portátil para su estadía en la Luna. El traje sería capaz de proteger al astronauta de una lluvia de micrometeoritos y de las temperaturas extremas de la superficie de la Luna y del espacio interestelar. Cada traje fue revisado meticulosamente por un equipo de técnicos antes de que el astronauta se lo colocase, después que cada tripulante lo vistiera y comprobara que le quedaba bien, los técnicos llevaron a cabo la ultima prueba antes de darle en visto bueno. Cada astronauta tenía tres trajes, uno de práctica y dos de vuelo, en el caso de que uno fallase siempre habría uno de repuesto. Al finalizar este proceso, en su recorrido por los pasillos del Edificio de Operaciones el personal de NASA, familiares, amigos y la gente de la prensa aplaudió y expresó sus mejores deseos a los tripulantes de misión. Finalmente, Armstrong, Aldrin y Collins abordaron un vehículo tipo “van”, e iniciaron su recorrido hacia el complejo 39A, en él se encontraba el gigantesco Saturno V iluminado por docenas de luces. Opuesto a él se hallaba el Edificio de Ensamblaje de Vehículos Espaciales ( VAB ). Éste es uno de los edificios más grandes del mundo mide unos 160 metros de altura y ocupa una superficie equivalente a la de cuatro campos de fútbol. En el interior de él, se encontraba las etapas de los Saturno, para ese momento se estaba ensamblando el siguiente cohete que iría a la Luna, la nave Apolo 12. Hoy en día su función es la misma, pero los vehículos que ensamblan son más pequeños, es la casa del Transbordador Espacial . Dentro del VAB existe un sistema climatológico muy especial, debido a las condiciones de la zona el sistema de ventilación debe ser calibrado con mucha precisión, de lo contrario se forman nubes dentro del edificio y llueve en su interior. En el camino hacia la plataforma 39A los astronautas podía ver al Saturno V , éste es el cohete más poderoso fabricado por el hombre, su altura de 111 metros lo hace verse imponente, algunos lo consideraban la pirámide tecnológica del siglo XX. La nave constaba de tres etapas, en el tope de la tercera (S-IVB) se encontraba la nave Apolo, conformada por el Módulo de Comando y Servicio ( CSM ) y el Módulo Lunar ( LM ). En la punta del cohete viajaban los astronautas, aquí se encontraba el CSM , detrás de éste, en un compartimiento especial se encontraba el LM . Éste no sería liberado hasta que los astronautas se encontraran en camino a la Luna. El conjunto del Saturno V/Apolo, mas el combustible, pesaba unas 2.913 toneladas para el momento del despegue. El Saturno V consumiría 4.535 Kg por segundo de combustible (kerosene y oxígeno liquido), y el empuje de la nave sería de unas 3.410.000 Kilogramos. El gigantesco Saturno estaba condenado a desaparecer poco a poco, este se iría desarmado a medida de que las etapas fuesen consumiendo y el cohete ganando altura. A una altura de 67 Km. la primera etapa S-IC , habría cumplido su función, sería desechada. La segunda ( S-II ), segundos después comenzaría a funcionar hasta alcanzar los 186 Km. Finalmente se encendería la tercera etapa ( S-IVB ) y los astronautas entrarían en órbita terrestre. Después de verificar que todos los sistemas estuviesen en orden la tercera etapa pondría a la nave Apolo y a los astronautas en ruta de Inserción Lunar ( TLI ). Una vez en camino se procedió a realizar la maniobra de extracción del LM y se programó a la tercera etapa, en ruta para impactar contra la superficie de la Luna.
A dos mil pies ( 609,6 metros ) sobre el Mar de la Tranquilidad, una pequeña nave, parecida a una araña, se desplazaba velozmente en búsqueda de un sitio para su descenso. De color gris, oro, plata y negro, se podía observar como una gigantesca llama brotaba del motor principal, en la etapa de descenso. El nombre de esta extraña nave: “Aguila” . En su interior se encontraban dos astronautas, quienes escribían uno de los momentos cúspides en la historia de la exploración espacial, mientras descendían hacia la superficie lunar. Los astronautas guiaban su descenso a través de una serie de números provenientes de la computadora en la nave y de referencias visuales, a través de dos pequeñas ventanas triangulares, desde donde podían ver su objetivo. Al cabo de unos pocos minutos y con asombro para los tripulantes de la nave, el lugar elegido para el descenso mostraba una cara muy diferente a la programada por los ingenieros de vuelo de la misión Apolo 11 . No era un campo liso y libre de obstáculos sino que por el contrario, el sitio se encontraba lleno de gigantescas rocas del tamaño de un automóvil. Para la tripulación esto no era más que una variación del plan original, algo común para un astronauta, el Comandante de la Misión Neil Armstrong tomó los controles de extraño artefacto, mientras que el Piloto del Módulo Lunar, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin se ocupaba de verificar todas las lecturas en la computadora para así poder “navegar” sobre la Luna. En 1966, durante la misión Géminis 8, Armstrong y su compañero David R. Scott, estuvieron a punto de convertirse en las primeras víctimas en el espacio, al atascarse uno de los motores de posición de su cápsula, causando, una serie de giros descontrolados, que hacían que él y su compañero casi perdieran la consciencia. Pero debido al temple de Armstrong, y luego de batallar con la situación por casi una hora logró salvar la vida de su compañero y la de él. Esta serenidad ante cualquier situación de peligro, la había adquirido Armstrong a través de sus años como piloto de pruebas en la Base Edwars. Fue aquí donde Armstrong por primera vez se enfrentó a los cohetes, piloteando aviones cohete como el X-1B y el X-15. Muchas de horas de vuelo, simulaciones y análisis de sus vuelos, llevaron a Armstrong a poseer nervios de acero, haciendo que esta situación fuese sólo un imprevisto y no un obstáculo para completar su objetivo, el primer descenso de un hombre a la Luna. Este problema no era completamente inesperado para los astronautas, ya Armstrong y Aldrin se habían dado cuenta que algo andaba mal al observar el terreno, cuando ellos avistaron al cráter Maskelyne, notaron que deberían alunizar fuera de sitio programado. Aparte de esto la comunicación con la Tierra se interrumpía en intervalos, creando gran tensión en el Control de la Misión en Houston. Sin ayuda de estos sería casi imposible alunizar, tal vez habría que abandonar el intento y la meta del presidente Kennedy. En la computadora del “ Aguila ” sonó una alarma y titiló el número “1202”, esto indicaba que los bancos de memoria de la computadora del LM se habían sobrecargando. De continuar así, la máquina tendría problemas para calcular la altitud y la velocidad haciendo que ni el piloto automático ni el astronauta completaran un descenso seguro. La telemetría en la Tierra indicaba que la altura del “ Aguila ” sobre la superficie de la Luna variaba rápidamente, en el Control de la Misión se escuchaba la voz serena de Aldrin leyendo los instrumentos. “Vamos, agárrense... dos mil pies ( 609,6 metros )”. La telemetría continuaba en descenso…mil seiscientos pies ( 487,68 metros )…mil cuatrocientos ( 426,72 metros ), a esta altura la computadora da una nueva alarma esta vez titila el número “1201” está nuevamente sobrecargada, pero ambos astronautas no hablan de esto... El “ Aguila ” descendía a una velocidad de 23 pies por segundo ( 25/Km/h ). ...setecientos pies ( 213,36 metros ) Aldrin continuaba leyendo los instrumentos del Módulo Lunar (LM) con la misma serenidad que lo había hecho antes. Al llegar a los cuatrocientos pies ( 121,92metros ) el LM comenzó a desplazarse horizontalmente y su ritmo de caída había descendido a unos 9 pies por segundo. A los trescientos treinta pies ( 100,58 metros ) el ritmo descendió más, a 3,5 pies por segundo... Los controladores de la misión no lo podían creer, algo andaba mal, esto no se ajustaba a los planes, el LM se movía solamente en horizontal a unos 47 pies por segundo, ahora no les quedaba nada más que observar los instrumentos y dejaba que Neil tomase todas las decisiones. En el Centro de Control se oían susurros, “Bájalo Neil, bájalo” y a pocos segundos comenzó el descenso nuevamente. Aldrin informaba... “ Vemos la Sombra... bajamos a 2,5, 19 adelante. Bajando 3,5. Doscientos veinte pies ( 67,05 metros ). 13 adelante…11 adelante.. . descendiendo suavemente... doscientos pies ( 60.96metros )… 3,5 bajando adelante… 5%... Este cinco por ciento indicaba que sólo le quedaban 94 segundos de combustible. Todos en Control de la Misión sabían que se había encendido la luz roja, existía una posibilidad de aborto si Neil no posaba al LM en la superficie. De ser necesario el aborto, tenía que ser rápido. Deberían desprenderse de la Etapa de Descenso y darle potencia total al motor de la Etapa de Asenso con el fin de contrarrestar la caída, y así, poder regresar a la órbita, para encontrase con el "Columbia" (Módulo de Comando y Servicio (CSM)), piloteado por Michael Collins . El CAPCOM (Comunicador de la Cápsula), el astronauta Charles M. Duke, les advertía que tan sólo les quedaban 30 segundos de combustible, mientras que cada hombre dentro del Control de la Misión contenía la respiración. Un fracaso sería un duro golpe para NASA, en especial en estos momentos, faltando poco más de cinco meses para que finalizara la década y con todo el mundo siguiendo el evento por televisión. Apolo 11 había tenido un vuelo libre de problemas, y el no alunizar comprometería al programa espacial. En el tablero de mando y en la consola del Control de misión se encendió la luz de falta de combustible, ahora se podía oír a los ingenieros del Control de la Misión decir: “bájalo Neil, bájalo”. Aldrin anunciaba “Adelante. Moviendo un poco a la derecha… luces de contacto… (las sondas de las patas del LM habían tocado ya la superficie)… OK. Paro del Motor…Modo de control Apagado, brazo del motor apagado. “ 413...” Con tan solo 20 Seg. de combustible el “ Aguila ” se había posado en la superficie de la Luna, entonces se oyeron las famosas palabras de Comandante Armstrong “Houston, Base de la Tranquilidad. El Aguila ha descendido” . La voz de alegría del CAPCOM les llegaba a los astronautas junto con los gritos de los controladores de la misión “Roger, Tranquilidad, copiamos que ustedes están en superficie, aquí hay un montón de tipos que se estaban tornado azules. Pero ya estamos respirando otra vez. Muchas gracias”.
Un pequeño Paso. A los controladores de la misión les tomó unas horas en averiguar el punto exacto del alunizaje. Estaban 7,40 Km. más lejos del punto previsto para el descenso. El éxito del alunizaje había dependido totalmente de la sangre fría de Armstrong. El primer alunizaje del programa Apolo, fue el más difícil. Los astronautas y los controladores de vuelo se habían entrenado para casi cualquier situación durante el descenso, pero las condiciones de la Apolo 11 eran únicas. Aparte de la tensión del primer descenso, las alarmas que se activaron sólo se habían presentado dos veces durante las simulaciones. Se pensaba que eran errores de programación, técnicamente esto no podría ocurrir durante el vuelo. Sin embargo los nervios de acero y el instinto del piloto de pruebas tomaron el control de la situación, desactivando la computadora y tomando el control manualmente. Una vez más quedo demostrada la habilidad del hombre para adaptarse a cualquier situación. Los astronautas describieron la superficie de la Luna como “una hermosa desolación”, cubierta de pequeñas rocas de diferentes tamaños, formas, ángulos y granulosidades. Los colores eran diversos, pero reinaban los matices de gris y marrón dependiendo del ángulo con el que se miraran. Armstrong y Aldrin se ocuparon de ajustar todos los sistemas de la nave. Asegurando el motor de la Etapa de Ascenso y los sistemas eléctricos del LM . Después de colocar la nave en modo de estadía en superficie lunar, los astronautas consumieron su primera comida en la Luna. Lo hicieron con sus ojos pegados a las ventanas . NASA les ordenó que descansasen, debían dormir antes de la caminata. Esto era absurdo, ¿quien podría descansar en uno de los momentos más emocionantes de la humanidad?. Armstrong pidió autorización al Control de la Misión para adelantar la caminata lunar. Una vez que esto fue aprobado, los astronautas se colocaron las sobre-botas lunares, las mochilas que llevaban el oxigeno, agua y sistemas de comunicaciones, éstas son conocidas como Sistemas Portátiles de Soporte de Vida (PLSS ). Éstos y sus trajes serian la atmósfera que llevaría cada astronauta para el paseo por la Luna. Una vez comprobados todos los sistemas de los trajes espaciales y verificar que todo estaba en orden, se procedió a depresurizar la cabina del LM . La primera “Caminata Lunar” (EVA, Actividad Extra Vehícular) estaba a punto de comenzar. Seis horas después del alunizaje se abrió la escotilla del “ Aguila ” y el comandante de la Apolo 11 inició su descenso de espalda hacia el porche de la nave. Al contrario de todos los héroes de ciencia-ficción, Armstrong se encontraba agachado y con sus pies tanteando los primeros peldaños de la escalerilla del LM. Antes de bajar se detuvo, por un instante, en el porche de la nave para halar de un gancho el cual se activó el MESA (Estructura Modular de Almacenamiento de Equipos), en él se encontraban los instrumentos científicos, bolsas, martillos, palas especiales para la recolección de muestras. Además, se encontraba la cámara de TV que transmitió las primeras imágenes del hombre en la superficie de la Luna. Gracias a esta cámara, millones de televidentes nunca olvidaran la llegada del primer hombre a la Luna. Armstrong: “Me encuentro en el pie de la escalera, las patas del LM apenas se han hundido unos pocos centímetros en el suelo”, “a pesar de que la superficie parece muy fina, con un ligero granulado. Si uno se acerca comprueba que es como un polvo muy fino parecido a la pólvora, es muy suave”. Armstrong se encontraba parado en una de las patas del tren de aterrizaje del Aguila”. Armstrong: “ Voy a alejarme del LM”, Armstrong alzó su pie izquierdo y adelantándolo ligeramente imprimió la pisada más famosa en la historia de la humanidad. Armstrong: “Un pequeño paso para un hombre, un gran salto para la humanidad”. Con éstas palabras, siempre recordaremos el momento en que el hombre pisó por primera vez la Luna. A Neil Armstrong le llamó la atención, la facilidad con la que el polvo de la superficie lunar se adhería a su bota, que apenas se deprimía unos pocos centímetros sobre la misma. Lo siguiente, después de hacer una breve descripción del terreno, fue seleccionar una muestra de contingencia. Neil la guardó en un bolsillo de su pantalón, después de todo, si por cualquier circunstancia debían abandonar la “Base de la Tranquilidad”, Neil tendría que hacerlo con su pantalón puesto. Minutos más tarde, Aldrin se reunió con su compañero. Los astronautas pronto descubrieron que moverse en 1/6 de la gravedad terrestre era más fácil que lo que habían practicado en el simulador. La manera más sencilla era desplazarse con saltos de canguro. Los trajes resultaban más cómodos en la Luna que en los entrenamientos y no les estorbaban tanto para caminar. Comenzaron a desplegar los instrumentos científicos y la cámara de TV. Millones de personas pudieron presenciar a través de sus televisores, el trabajo que desempeñaba la tripulación de la Apolo 11.
Ciencia en la Luna. Con el fin de estudiar la edad de la Luna, el origen de ella y su composición, la tripulación de la Apolo 11 , y las tripulaciones posteriores, llevaron consigo una serie de aparatos e instrumentos científico capaces de analizar algunos de los fenómenos que se realizan en la superficie de nuestra compañera celestial. En la Luna los tripulantes de la Apolo 11 instalaron un experimento que estaba destinado al estudio del “Viento Solar”. Este “viento” que no es más que partículas ionizadas de gas, que salen del Sol, bombardean todos los planetas del Sistema Solar. En la Tierra estas partículas sólo pueden ser vista en las zonas polares del planeta, aquellos afortunados que han podido presenciar este espectáculo, lo conocen como la “Aurora Boreal”. Con el fin de detectar si la Luna era geológicamente activa Armstrong y Aldrin colocaron una sismómetro para medir la intensidad de los “Lunamotos”. Esté resultó ser tan potente que pudo registrar los pasos de los astronautas al caminar sobre la superficie. Desafortunadamente el instrumento solo sobrevivió una tarde y una noche sobre la superficie, éste no estaba lo suficientemente protegido para soportar las temperaturas que oscilan los 133ºC y los –152ºC en la superficie lunar. Una de las tareas más difíciles para los astronautas era la selección de rocas. Estas debían ser escogidas en una variedad que pudiese “narrar” a los científicos, la historia desde el punto de vista geológico del Mar de la Tranquilidad. Un buen muestreo, daría una gran información a los geólogos del programa Apolo. La zona del descenso se encontraba cubierta de miles de rocas, la selección sería la clave para una buena historia del el “Mar de la Tranquilidad”. Durante la corta estadía de la tripulación de la Apolo 11 , se recogieron 22,67 Kg de rocas. Estas fueron almacenadas en dos baúles de aluminio y solo fueron abiertas otra vez en los laboratorios de Houston. Otro de los experimentos que instalaron los astronautas durante su paseo, fue un espejo especial. Este fue apuntado con un láser desde la Tierra y sirvió para medir la distancia exacta entre ambos cuerpos durante las diferentes fases de la Luna. Una de las tareas más importantes fue el levantamiento fotográfico de la zona del descenso. Esto aparte de ser un testimonio histórico, también sirvió a los científicos para analizar la zona del alunizaje, evitando así que se les pudiese pasar por alto algún detalle durante la misión. Estas imágenes fueron reproducidas en libros, periódicos y revistas, ayudando así a la difusión de la odisea de la Apolo 11 . Éste es el mayor testimonio de este viaje.

The disk carries the goodwill statements by Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Jophnson and Nixon and messages from leaders of 73 countries around the world. The same process used in making integrated circuits produced the message disk. First the messages were photographed and the photo reduced 200 times. The resulting image was transferred to glass which was used as a mask through which ultra-violet light was beamed on-to a photosensitive film on the silicon disc. After a photo development step, the disc was washed with hydroflouric acid which accomlished the final etching. The words on the disc - which is about the size of a U.S 50 cent piece willremain readable through a miscroscope. At the top of the disc is the inscription: Goodwill messages from around the world brought to the Moon by the astronauts of Apollo 11. Around the disc you can read: From Planet Earth -- July 1969 The disk was transported in an aluminium capsule and is (hopefully) still in the capsule on the lunar surface. Top Ten Scientific Discoveries Made During Apollo Exploration of the Moon The Moon is not a primordial object; it is an evolved terrestrial planet with internal zoning similar to that of Earth. Before Apollo, the state of the Moon was a subject of almost unlimited speculation. We now know that the Moon is made of rocky material that has been variously melted, erupted through volcanoes, and crushed by meteorite impacts. The Moon possesses a thick crust (60 km), a fairly uniform lithosphere (60-1000 km), and a partly liquid asthenosphere (1000-1740 km); a small iron core at the bottom of the asthenosphere is possible but unconfirmed. Some rocks give hints for ancient magnetic fields although no planetary field exists today. The Moon is ancient and still preserves an early history (the first billion years) that must be common to all terrestrial planets. The extensive record of meteorite craters on the Moon, when calibrated using absolute ages of rock samples, provides a key for unravelling time scales for the geologic evolution of Mercury, Venus, and Mars based on their individual crater records. Photogeologic interpretation of other planets is based largely on lessons learned from the Moon. Before Apollo, however, the origin of lunar impact craters was not fully understood and the origin of similar craters on Earth was highly debated. The youngest Moon rocks are virtually as old as the oldest Earth rocks. The earliest processes and events that probably affected both planetary bodies can now only be found on the Moon. Moon rock ages range from about 3.2 billion years in the maria (dark, low basins) to nearly 4.6 billion years in the terrae (light, rugged highlands). Active geologic forces, including plate tectonics and erosion, continuously repave the oldest surfaces on Earth whereas old surfaces persist with little disturbance on the Moon. The Moon and Earth are genetically related and formed from different proportions of a common reservoir of materials. The distinctively similar oxygen isotopic compositions of Moon rocks and Earth rocks clearly show common ancestry. Relative to Earth, however, the Moon was highly depleted in iron and in volatile elements that are needed to form atmospheric gases and water. The Moon is lifeless; it contains no living organisms, fossils, or native organic compounds. Extensive testing revealed no evidence for life, past or present, among the lunar samples. Even non-biological organic compounds are amazingly absent; traces can be attributed to contamination by meteorites. All Moon rocks originated through high-temperature processes with little or no involvement with water. They are roughly divisible into three types: basalts, anorthosites, and breccias. Basalts are dark lava rocks that fill mare basins; they generally resemble, but are much older than, lavas that comprise the oceanic crust of Earth. Anorthosites are light rocks that form the ancient highlands; they generally resemble, but are much older than, the most ancient rocks on Earth. Breccias are composite rocks formed from all other rock types through crushing, mixing, and sintering during meteorite impacts. The Moon has no sandstones, shales, or limestones such as testify to the importance of water-borne processes on Earth. Early in its history, the Moon was melted to great depths to form a "magma ocean." The lunar highlands contain the remnants of early, low density rocks that floated to the surface of the magma ocean. The lunar highlands were formed about 4.4-4.6 billion years ago by flotation of an early, feldspar-rich crust on a magma ocean that covered the Moon to a depth of many tens of kilometers or more. Innumerable meteorite impacts through geologic time reduced much of the ancient crust to arcuate mountain ranges between basins. The lunar magma ocean was followed by a series of huge asteroid impacts that created basins which were later filled by lava flows. The large, dark basins such as Mare Imbrium are gigantic impact craters, formed early in lunar history, that were later filled by lava flows about 3.2-3.9 billion years ago. Lunar volcanism occurred mostly as lava floods that spread horizontally; volcanic fire fountains produced deposits of orange and emerald-green glass beads. The Moon is slightly asymmetrical in bulk form, possibly as a consequence of its evolution under Earth's gravitational influence. Its crust is thicker on the far side, while most volcanic basins -- and unusual mass concentrations -- occur on the near side. Mass is not distributed uniformly inside the Moon. Large mass concentrations ("Mascons") lie beneath the surface of many large lunar basins and probably represent thick accumulations of dense lava. Relative to its geometric center, the Moon's center of mass is displaced toward Earth by several kilometers. The surface of the Moon is covered by a rubble pile of rock fragments and dust, called the lunar regolith, that contains a unique radiation history of the Sun which is of importance to understanding climate changes on Earth. The regolith was produced by innumerable meteorite impacts through geologic time. Surface rocks and mineral grains are distinctively enriched in chemical elements and isotopes implanted by solar radiation. As such, the Moon has recorded four billion years of the Sun's history to a degree of completeness that we are unlikely to find elsewhere. Apollo 11 Objectives Spacecraft Primary Objective 1. Tres enormes paracaídas blanquirojos marcaban el fin de viaje y el éxito de la misión. The Loss of 'Helicopter 66' June 4, 1975 Check-Six is currently researching a possible recovery effort of the world-famous "Helicopter 66" "Helicopter 66", or US Navy Bureau Number 152711, is one of the most widely-recognized helicopters in history. It is the prime recovery helicopter for five of the Apollo missions. A Sikorsky SH-3D Sea King, it served with Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 4 (HS-4). From late 1968 through the spring of 1970, the Black Knights of HS-4 participated in and pioneered techniques for the Apollo capsule recoveries. HS-4 was on scene for Apollo missions 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13. The helicopter's flight number was changed from '66' to '740' (The Navy had switched to a three number squadron designator - but the chopper was repainted with the number 66 for each recovery thereafter for PR reasons). On June 4th, 1975, the helicopter departed the Naval Auxiliary Air Field at Imperial Beach, CA, at 1900 hours, enroute to the Helicopter Offshore Training Area to conduct a scheduled night anti-submarine sonar training flight. The flight's pilot-in-command was LT Leo S. Rolek and the copilot was LTJG Charles D. Neville. Twenty minutes later, the crew reported their position and commenced operations with four approaches to sonar hover and four night/low visibility and wind-line rescue patterns with hover trim practice until dusk. After sunset (1953 hours), the crew conducted four more approaches to sonar hovers while practicing dip-to-dip navigation with the pilots alternating approaches. Complying with reporting it every half-hour, the practices proceeded normally until 2133. With the sonar dome lowered down to 100 feet below the water's surface, the hover of the helicopter became unstable. The two sonar operators, AWH3 Brady W. Turner and AWH3 Peter C. Cassidy, sank the sonar dome deeper in the ocean, hoping the stability would improve and, for a brief moment, it worked. But, then the sonar dome began to pull Helo '740' downward to 30 feet above the waterline. The helicopter, being pulled backwards, impacted the water, sinking quickly. The four crewmen all egressed and when picked up by a Coast Guard HH-3F shortly before midnight. They were taken to the Naval Hospital at San Diego. Three of the crewmen was released from the hospital in the days that followed. But the pilot, who suffered from a ruptured spleen from the mishap, died of his injuries a couple of weeks later. The crash report indicates that the wreck of 152711 is located at a depth of over 800 fathoms. However, we have heard from divers who report the helo's depth at 220 feet, and in good structural shape.

Apenas estamos comenzando la exploración espacial; han pasado 30 años desde que el hombre se posó por primera vez en la superficie de la luna, pero ¿Dónde estamos hoy en día?, ¿Hacia donde vamos? La última misión tripulada en visitar la Luna fue la Apolo 17 , en diciembre de 1972. Los planes originales de la conquista del espacio indicaban que para los años noventa tendríamos bases en la Luna y se suponía que ya habríamos visitado Marte. Pero en lugar de esto, parece que hemos abandonado el sueño de viajar hacia las estrellas. Nos hemos dedicado a la guerra y a la contaminación del planeta, sin contar con que hemos irrespetando a los demás seres vivos que conviven con nosotros en este mundo. El hombre cree ser un dios, amo absoluto de un pequeño mundo azul, éste sólo ocupa la tercera posición dentro de nuestro sistema planetario. Somos sólo unos inquilinos, si quisiéramos no podríamos crear un mundo igual. Tan sólo doce hombres han observado a la Tierra desde la superficie de otro cuerpo celeste. Ellos nos cuentan que la Tierra se ve tan frágil, sobre el terciopelo negro del Cosmos, dando la impresión de que ellos podían sostenerla entre sus dedos. Los astronautas y cosmonautas de todas las naciones coinciden que nuestro planeta muestra su fragilidad desde el espacio. También nos dicen que desde allí, no se ven fronteras que dividan al planeta. Las naciones no existen, sólo se ve un pequeño mundo azul, aquí simplemente enemigos y amigos habitamos todos. Toda esa cultura que es conocida como humanidad se encuentra aquí. No hay país o fuerza política que emane de éste punto. Sólo está presente su frágil hermosura y sus vivos colores. Tal vez, ésta es una de las enseñanzas más importantes que nos ha dado el programa espacial. Pero, ¿ hacia donde vamos?. En los años 70 las estaciones espaciales Sayult y Skylab revolucionaron al mundo con sus descubrimientos en órbitas terrestres, la ciencia espacial nacía. En 1975 tuvimos la oportunidad de ver como la ultima nave Apolo, diseñada para vencer a los Soviéticos se unía en órbita con su contraparte la Soyuz. Este fue el primer programa conjunto de los dos grandes rivales. (Programa de Pruebas Apolo-Soyuz ). A finales de los 70 y durante toda la década de los 80 las sondas Voyager nos revelaron los planetas gigantes del Sistema Solar. En 1981 el primer vehículo espacial reusable entraba en órbita, el Transbordador Espacial “ Columbia ”. En 1986 recordamos una vieja lección, el acceso al espacio es peligroso. En los 90 el Telescopio Espacial Hubble comenzó a redefinir los límites conocidos del Universo. Mostrándonos imágenes de los sitios más lejanos de nuestra Galaxia. En los últimos años de este siglo el Transbordador Espacial realizó una serie de visitas a la Estación Espacial Mir , marcando los inicios de una verdadera cooperación espacial. En 1996 científicos de NASA y otras instituciones anunciaron la posibilidad de una vida bacteriana en el pasado remoto de Marte. En éstos últimos cinco años se ha logrado la colaboración de varias naciones para la fabricación de la primera Estación Espacial Internacional . En noviembre y diciembre de 1998 se lanzaron y acoplaron los dos primeros módulos de esta estación. Este es un esfuerzo conjunto el cual debe culminar en el 2004, con el nacimiento de un nuevo milenio. Esta estación será el triunfo tecnológico de nuestros tiempos una nueva pirámide. Si estudiamos nuestra historia, ya sabremos que las pirámides no se construyeron en un día. Y sin un apoyo constante no lograremos nuestras metas. Muchos preguntan por que invertir tanto en el espacio, el desarrollo de estas tecnologías se traduce en empleos, empleos aquí en el tercer planeta del sistema solar. Otros dicen que por que no invertir lo mismo en los mercados ya establecidos. Kennedy no imaginó nunca los Spinoff (las Tecnologías derivadas del Programa Espacial). ¿Sabía usted... ...que la tela de lycra, desarrollada para el programa espacial, no sirvió para calentar a los astronautas en el espacio?. ...que los zapatos deportivos con aire en las suelas proviene de la misma tecnología de las botas que emplearon los astronautas para caminar en la Luna? ...que las bombonas de oxígeno que emplean los bomberos, son derivadas de los PLSS empleados para el Programa Apolo? ...que las fibras de carbono empleadas en lentes, raquetas de tenis y aviones son provenientes del estudio de nuevos materiales para las cápsulas espaciales? Algo que también le puede interesar, es que el hombre llegó a la Luna con una computadora que poseía menos memoria que su agenda electrónica, en realidad la Pentium en que estoy escribiendo este documento habría sido la Giga computadora del Programa Apolo. Los ordenadores que existen en su casa u oficinas son familia del DYSK , la computadora del Módulo Lunar y el Módulo de Comando. En cada una de nuestras casas existen objetos que son derivados directos de la tecnología espacial, esta llega a todos, ¿Cree usted que valga la pena la inversión?. Hoy día, los costos de la conquista espacial son tan elevados, que ninguna nación puede por si sola enfrentar los mismos. Los 10 descubrimientos más Importantes de Programa Apolo 1. La Luna no es un objeto primario. 2. La Luna es antigua y preserva gran parte de su historia, la cual debería ser como la de la mayoría de los demás cuerpos. 3. Las rocas lunares son virtualmente tan antiguas como las viejas rocas terrestres. 4. La Luna y la Tierra están formadas a partir de una reserva común de materiales. 5. La luna no contiene organismos vivos, fósiles o componentes orgánicos nativos. 6. Todas las rocas lunares sufrieron procesos a altas temperaturas con una baja o nula participación de agua. Se pueden dividir en tres tipos: basaltos, anorthositas y breccias. 7. La luna se derritió a grandes profundidades formando un océano de magma. 8. La Luna ha sufrido gigantescos impactos de meteoritos que crearon depresiones rellenadas después por fluidos de lava. 9. La Luna es ligeramente asimétrica en su forma, posiblemente como consecuencia de su evolución bajo la influencia de la gravedad terrestre. 10. La superficie de la Luna esta recubierta de cascotes y fragmentos de roca y polvo, llamados regolito lunar. Este contiene una abundante historia de la radiación solar, la cual es muy importante para la comprensión de los cambios climáticos terrestres. Algo que no se menciona pero debería ser igual de importante, es que los astronautas fueron los primeros en ver lo frágil que es nuestro planeta

Los USA hicieron 192 placas conmemorativas con polvo lunar para dárselas a diversos mandatarios gubernamentales y naciones amigas
El 40 Aniversario de la misión AS 11 La última misión tripulada en visitar la Luna fue la Apolo 17 en diciembre de 1972. Los planes originales de la conquista del espacio indicaban que para los años noventa tendríamos bases en la Luna y se suponía que ya habríamos visitado Marte. Pero en lugar de esto, parece que hemos abandonado el sueño de viajar hacia las estrellas. La decisión de ir a la Luna, siempre fue una decisión política, la ciencia no tuvo nada que ver con la motivación para el viaje. Entre los años de 1968 y 1972, treinta y tres hombres volaron en el Programa Apolo, 24 de ellos orbitaron la Luna y de éstos sólo 12 caminaron en su superficie. Los tripulantes de La Apollo 11 se encuentran vivos. Todos han escrito libros sobre su increíble viaje.
