Lewis B.Sc (Pret); Post-graduate diploma in Market Research and Advertising (S.A.); M.B.L. (S.A.) (Cum Laude); D.B.L. (S.A.); Formerly Professor Extraordinarius, UNISA Graduate School of Business Leadership; Formerly Professor Corporate Strategy, De Montfort University, Sandton. Dr. Lewis attended an advanced programme in Executive Reinvention with Goss Reid Associates, in Austin, Texas, USA in February and March of 1997. Over the following 2 to 3 years he developed the BMI-BRSCU Leadership - Reinvention Programme, an intensive two-day workshop guaranteed to reinvent and transform participants. This multi-disciplinary and multi-functional workshop has been attended by more than 500 participants since 1999 and is regularly offered for individuals from different companies, as well as for customised in-company programmes. Dr. Lewis has also offered a number of Master classes on Leadership in South Africa, the UK and Portugal. He also lectures on the topic at under- and post-graduate level. Participants, who commit themselves to this powerful methodology, gain an awareness of the fundamental links between their view of the world at any moment, and the ultimate scope of their achievements and failures. strategy@bmi-brscu.co.za jennifer@leadershipreinvention.co.za www.strategicforum.co.za STRATEGY, LEADERSHIP AND ORGANISATIONAL REINVENTION PROGRAMME In the Context of the Building-, Construction- and Property Environments High performance leadership in turbulent environments
  • THE LEADERSHIP AND ORGANISATIONAL REINVENTION PROGRAMME High Performance Leadership in turbulent environments This programme has been developed and refined over a period of years based on extensive reading, application in leadership-, organizational reinvention and strategy workshops. Over the past 10 years several hundred middle to senior management executives have participated in the programme which has been continuously modified based on new insights and the feedback received. The Leadership and Organisational Reinvention concepts are powerfully illustrated through personal anecdote and strategic application within the context of the Building-, Construction- and Property-Industry environments. Powerful strategic concepts such as Stakeholder Analysis, Culture, Paradigms and Paradigm Shift, the Value Chain and Strategic Capabilities are interwoven into the course. There is a lot of talk these days about REINVENTING - the Organisation, or the Industry, or even just a process or a product. The concept is used superficially and indiscriminately, without the vaguest appreciation of what reinvention really entails. Suffice it to say that you cannot reinvent your Organisation, Industry, Community, Country, Profession, or Products, WITHOUT FIRST REINVENTING YOURSELF. When people glibly talk about reinventing an organisation, the process, as far as they are concerned, typically involves improvement of some kind. There is a focus on DOING, on fixing, or improving this or that. This is a consequence of the sixteenth-century Newtonian mechanistic and deterministic view of the universe that still guides much thinking today, but which has become increasingly dysfunctional in these times of interdependence, rapid change and even chaos. Typically, re-engineering, incremental improvement, benchmarking, best practice and even Paradigm Shift, fall under the umbrella of the so-called Universal Human Paradigm, with its preoccupation on doing, fixing, or improving. There is no denying that all these processes are useful, and at times necessary – but they cannot remotely be classified as reinvention. For example, in order to shift a paradigm, you have to have one, whereas to reinvent a paradigm, you have to CREATE one that doesn’t exist in your current reality. Therefore the executive who would master reinvention must journey into a largely unfamiliar, and at times, uncomfortable territory. In this territory a crucial dimension is hidden until we learn to distinguish it. This is the territory or domain of BEING. Reinvention entails the creation of a new context. It embraces the art and craft of continuously engineering SHIFTS IN BEING, which in turn produce sustainable, unprecedented results, which could even be designated as IMPOSSIBILITIES. The capacity to discover and participate in our unfolding future has more to do with our BEING – our total orientation of character and consciousness – than with our DOING. FORMAT: Interactive learning Individual and group learning via the strategic conversation Use of inquiry as a learning tool Review of existing assumptions, challenging old paradigms, old ways of doing Transformation, liberation from addiction to interpretation Operating beyond the limits of existing Winning Strategy The programme offered is based on the book by Tracy Goss, and the Executive Reinvention Programme attended by the Consultant during February and March of 1997, in Austin, Texas, at the invitation of Tracy Goss*. The particular programme offered has been developed over a period of years, informed by the Tracy Goss programme and book, and a wide and diverse range of strategic leadership concepts, incorporated into a holistic, systems view of the business, in interaction with its task and remote environments. A comprehensive list of books and articles provides the interested participant with additional sources of reference. (* Tracy Goss: The last word on power. Executive reinvention for leaders who must make the impossible happen: Judy Piatkus Publishers Ltd: 1996) DEVELOPING A SUPPORT NETWORK: Continuing support is provided via quarterly meetings of The BMI Strategic Forum, where the reinvention conversation is continued, as well as via the BMI Strategic Forum web site where topical articles, conversations and reports of previous forum discussions can be accessed and discussed.

  • STRATEGY, LEADERSHIP AND ORGANISATIONAL REINVENTION Within the context of the Building-, Construction- and Property-Industry System Transformation Topics: Change and Transformation The Universal Human Paradigm: What do we listen for, how does it influence our actions and why does it? Uncovering our Winning Strategies The compensating power principle : suppressing what is really desired but not possible Acting from the Universal Human Paradigm Categories of Winning Strategies Identifying Leadership Winning Strategies Limitation of Winning Strategies Leadership tantrums, payoffs and costs arising from Winning Strategies Power in the Universal Human Paradigm Power in the Reinvention Master Paradigm Making the Impossible happen Context : Way of Being Towards reinvention and transformation Seven transformations: Freedom from past constraints and Building capacity to make the impossible happen Action under the Reinvention Master Paradigm Creating an invented future in the area of Content, Process and Context Strategic Applications: Scenarios: World, South Africa, Property Industry Context, Mindsets, Industry Recipes Stakeholder Power and Influence of Industry Players Paradigms, Rules of the Game Paradigm Blind-spots The Cultural Web of Industry Stakeholders The Value Chain of Industry Stakeholders The Business Idea of Industry Stakeholders Strategic Intent, Vision, Mission, Slogan, Values Redefining Industry Boundaries Breaking the Silo Paradigm Reconfiguring the Value Chain Paradigm Shift Paradigm Reinvention Changing the Rules of the Game Strategies Strategy Development Directions Unique Resources, Core Competencies Future Business Idea to intercept the future Future Paradigm Towards Cultural Transformation Future Structure (follows strategy) WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Executives who have already succeeded according to the conventional standards of their industry or profession; Executives who face a future of getting still better at what they already do very well. Executives who have a restless inquisitiveness, a relentless curiosity that has them always seeking the next challenge; Executives who must be transformational catalysts in their organisation and who are questioning whether, what has enabled their success to date, will suffice to accomplish what they and their organisations are committed to for the future; Executives whose accountability and commitment to the future of their organisation is such that they are inquiring into or already engaged in a redesign of their leadership to match their commitments. According to Tracy Goss (The last word on Power: 1996: 13), the situation even of corporate leaders in business today is that “They take on ‘top gun’ missions of complete corporate reinvention but without any training.” Only the top one-percent of managers reaches the senior position at the helm of an organisation. Since they are the “best of the best”, it is assumed they already know what they need to know. It is not acknowledged that reinvention requires that even leaders must learn new skills if they want to transform their organisations. The Leadership Reinvention programme is designed for upwardly mobile key leaders throughout an organisation who are secure in their own success, yet willing to acknowledge and explore the limits of that success to challenge what they have become for the possibility they can be.
