  3. 3. Causes of Re-urbanisation <ul><li>Redevelopment of urban areas </li></ul><ul><li>More expensive in rural areas due to increase in popularity </li></ul><ul><li>Nearness of employment </li></ul><ul><li>Supportive attitudes of council members </li></ul>
  4. 4. Case Study- Manchester <ul><li>Salford quays </li></ul><ul><li>The dock basins and surrounding areas were left vacant after counter urbanisation. A development plan was introduced in 1985 and so the following land uses were created: </li></ul><ul><li>Residential </li></ul><ul><li>Commercial offices </li></ul><ul><li>Leisure and recreation areas </li></ul><ul><li>(water sports, restaurants. Cinemas) </li></ul>
  5. 5. Castlefield <ul><li>In the 1970’s the centre city was being deserted by industries leaving behind derelict buildings. Due to the historical wealth of the area it was declared a conservation area in 1979. Since investors have converted the area into a commercial, residential and leisure area but with a focus on tourism: </li></ul><ul><li>The grand studio’s tour </li></ul><ul><li>Museums </li></ul><ul><li>Numerous outdoor events </li></ul>
  6. 6. Gentrification <ul><li>The process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents </li></ul>
  7. 7. Differences between gentrification and re-urbanisation <ul><li>Re-urbanisation is used to attract more people into cities and away from urban areas while as gentrification is to attract middle classes into the area. </li></ul>
