  2. 2. Lady Jane Grey , a grandniece of Henry VIII of England reigned as uncrowned Queen Regnant of the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Ireland for nine days in July 1553, and for that reason is called "The Nine Days Queen".It is the shortest rule of England in its history, and England's first ever female monarch regnant . Jane's accession, pursuant to the willof Edward VI breached the laws of England as under the Third Succession Act Mary Tudor was the legitimate and rightful heir to the Crown. Mary had been declared illegitimate by her father, Henry VIII. Mary subsequently had Jane executed for treason Lady Jane had a reputation as one of the most learned women of her day, and the historical writer describes her as one of "the finest female minds of the century". At the time of her death, she was 16. http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/STUDENTS/Bracewell/e6.htm Henry VIII deepest wish came true on 12 October 1537 with the birth of his only son, Edward. With his death, the nine year old prince became king. But since he was only a minor, he was put into the protection of his uncle. Edward talked his advisors into letting him take control of England at his 16th birthday. But in the beginning of 1552, Edward became sick with the measles and with small pox. By this time, Edward was in the control of the Duke of Northumberland, a selfish man greedy for power. He pressured Edward into writing his two sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, out of the succession, replacing them with Jane Grey, his daughter-in-law. On 6 July 1553, Edward died. MARY I (r. 1553-1558) M ary I was the first Queen Regnant. Courageous and stubborn, her character was moulded by her early years.,Mary restored papal supremacy in England. Mary also revived the old heresy laws to secure the religious conversion of the country; As a result, around 300 Protestant heretics were burnt in three years, these heretics were mostly poor and self-taught people.Aged 37 at her accession, Mary wished to marry and have children, thus leaving a Catholic heir to consolidate her religious reforms, and removing her half-sister) from direct succession. Mary's decision to marry Philip, King of Spain from 1556, in 1554 was very unpopular; The marriage was childless, Philip spent most of it on the continent, England obtained no share in the Spanish monopolies in New World trade and the alliance with Spain dragged England into a war with France. tation as
