OUR STORY

“Might I have a bit of earth?”
To plant seeds in. . .
To make things grow. . .
To see them come alive. . .
—The Secret Garden, by F. H. Burnett

Our story begins with a bit of earth.
A bit of earth so barren it was called the “Desolate Savanna.”
And a dream to make things grow there.
To start, we renamed our bit of earth the “Savanna of Hope.”

We formed a community to plant trees.
Mango trees.
Papaya trees.
Soursop trees.
And the earth came alive.

Word soon spread.
Other communities gathered
to plant trees.
They hoped to restore the soil.
And to stop the summer rains from washing mud and rocks down the mountainsides.
And to grow food for their families.

The people also began to grow
a special tree called jatropha.
The seeds of this tree can be crushed to release oil.
The oil can be used as
biofuel.

The biofuelcan power. . .
. . . trucks to bring the fruit to market.
. . . generators to supply electricity for schools and hospitals.
. . . cookstovesso no more trees will be cut down and burned.

grown in 5 main nurseries
and 4 small nurseries

17 people employed in the nurseries
More than 500 people involved in planting trees in their communities

Planting and weeding = $1,000
Nursery attendants = $1,000

Assistant manager = $450
Food for workers = $150
Digging of canals = $130

Well construction = $3,000

Fuel for running pumps = $338

for 2012is to
buy an oil press.
This will allow us to
complete the circle from
seed to sustainable fuel.
