FUELING HAITI'S FUTURE Reforesting Haiti while replacing charcoal and diesel with locally produced biodiesel.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Haiti is the most deforested nation in the Western Hemisphere, with less than 2% of its original forest cover remaining.
The rampant deforestation contributes to devastating floods, widespread erosion, and loss of biodiversity.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
Over 70% of energy needs in Haiti are met by charcoal and other wood-based fuels.
The use of charcoal for cooking leads to serious respiratory illnesses, particularly among women and children. According to the World Health Organization, indoor air pollution is responsible for 2.7 percent of the global burden of disease.

PROJECT BACKGROUND HAITIAN ECONOMY
Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, with a per capita GDP of only $1400 per year. The second poorest nation, Nicaragua, has a per capita GDP of $3000 per year.
Over 2/3 of the Haitian labor force lacks formal employment. Most Haitians make a subsistence living from farming.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION We plan not only to reforest Haiti's barren landscape but also to attack the root cause of the country's deforestation—charcoal production. We will achieve this by planting oil-producing trees, such as jatropha and castor, which will supply the feedstock for local biofuel production. In addition, we will replace charcoal stoves with locally manufactured biodiesel stoves.
PROJECT GOALS ECONOMIC GOALS ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS SOCIAL GOALS
Restore the degraded Haitian soils
Reduce the severity of hurricanes and other natural disasters
Reduce the siltification of rivers and ocean harbors
Reimburse Haitian farmers for the cultivation of biofuel crops
Employ Haitians in the manufacture of biodiesel and of biodiesel stoves
Employ Haitians in the distribution and sale of biodiesel and biodiesel stoves
Educate Haitians about environmental stewardship
Serve as a model for projects that address environmental and economic concerns in a unified manner
Youth seminars in environmental science and environmental stewardship
Public demonstrations of biodiesel stoves
Hands-on seminars in nursery construction and tree planting
Establishment of nurseries to cultivate oil-producing trees and other useful species
Partnerships with peasant associations to plant fields of jatropha and castor
Construction of factories to crush the seeds and convert the oil into biodiesel
Construction of factories to fabricate biodiesel stoves and generators
Publicize the products through radio, TV, and other media
Distribute the products regionally, nationally, and internationally
