Slide 4: Question: How can I save my EndNote library at home & continue at the library? • Make a research folder on your USB memory stick • Save your EndNote library here along with other papers you want to keep in this folder • Take this USB memory stick with you • When at a computer in library, insert the memory stick into the computer’s USB drive • Go to My Computer and select the USB drive • Open the EndNote library you saved from home • EndNote X1 program on the library computer opens Endnote Questions 4

Slide 5: Question: How do I get EndNote references into Word for a STAND-ALONE BIBLIOGRAPHY? Exporting Bibliographies from EndNote 1. Open: EndNote library 2. Select: output style (i.e. APA) 3. Highlight: references to be exported to Word 4. From EndNote Click: File and Click : Export 5. Save: designate folder and save bibliography 6. Name File: example filename, networking.rtf Adding Rich Text File .rtf extension works well within Word (example filename: networking.rtf). 7. Open this file in Word and save as a .doc Endnote Questions 5

Slide 6: Question: can I insert the EndNote Bibliography into an existing Word document? 1. Open new or existing Word document 2. Put cursor where you want the bibliography to go 3. Click: Import from the Endnote toolbar in Word File 4. Select the .rtf bibliography previously saved 5. And, there it is as promised! Ready for a bit of editing and re-saving 6. Slide 8: Question: Can I move/copy a reference from one library to another? • More than one library can be open at a time • Use the “Window” option from top toolbar to go from one library to another – Open the library with the citation to copy – Right click and select “copy” – Open library that needs the copied citation – Within the citations window, right click and select “paste” – The copied reference from library #1 was just pasted into the reference list of library #2 – Double-click on the reference to open the complete record for this citation Endnote Questions 8

Slide 10: Question: Where is ASME • Asked by a mechanical engineering student: Will EndNote support ASME citation format? • Answer: Thompson Publishing response: “We do not have an output style for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. I would suggest having you and the other people you are working with request that the style be created on our website. New styles are created based on the number of requests for new styles, so if more people are requesting an ASME output style, it will increase the probability of the style being created. Requests for new styles can be made at: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstylereq.asp” Endnote Questions 10

Slide 11: Question: Adding page numbers to EndNote citations within the Word document • In Word, click anywhere on the citation you want to edit • From Tools menu, go to EndNoteX submenu and then Edit Citation • The Edit Citation box appears • The citation is highlighted in the left hand window • Look at right hand window See: Pages • Type the pages you want to add to the citation • example: Pages 34-35 • Click OK (NOT insert like I did a million times) • Look at the edited citation in Word. Any suggestions? • Author is National Association of Social Workers [NASW] • EndNote needs to know this is one name, a last name of author • Put a comma after association’s name and EndNote is happy: National Association of Social Workers, or NASW, • The reference cite: National Association of Social Workers. (1999). • First text citation: (National Association of Social Workers NASW, 1999) • Subsequent text citations: (NASW, 1999) Endnote Questions 16

Slide 17: Question: I don’t have Word Will CWYW work for me? • Do you use a word processor other than Word, or an older version of Word? • save your document as an .RTF file and use Format Paper • See Chapter 11 of the EndNote Manual (it downloaded with the software). Endnote Questions 17

Slide 18: Does academic.live.com link to EndNote like Google Scholar? • YES . . . Export citations • Live Search Academic Beta displays search result citations in the preview pane. You can export the citation to EndNote, or RefWorks so that you can store, format, and manage citations for your research. • To export a citation: • Go to http://academic.live.com. • Type keywords or a question about what you want to find, and then click the Search button . • Point to a search result, and then locate the abstract in the preview pane. • In the preview pane, click BibTeX, EndNote, or RefWorks. • In the preview pane, do one of the following: – If you're using EndNote, or RefWorks, click the export link to automatically export the citation to your software. – If you're using BibTeX, copy the coded text from the preview pane, and then paste the code into BibTeX. Slide 19: Question: How do I export files from Health & wellness resource center into EndNote? • “Currently there is no specific export feature included in Health and Wellness Resource Center.” Thomson Gale Technical Support Analyst • This database provider does not support exporting citations into EndNote. You will need to manually enter the citation into Endnote. • How did I know? Remember the Best Tip? Slide 23: Using EndNote with CSA: • Click: Save citations in CSA and save file • From PAIS go to Help Index and type endnote and this is what you will get: • After you have saved your citations, go to the EndNote Import Filters page www.endnote.com/support/enfilters.asp, select the appropriate CSA filter by right clicking on the FTP link (CSA PAIS International 1/7/2005 FTP) and selecting Save Target As. Make sure it is saved as an .enf document. • Open a library in EndNote, • Select Import from File menu, select the CSA file you just saved (Import Data File) Endnote Questions 23

Slide 24: CSA databases . . . con’t select the CSA file you just saved (Import Data File) and the CSA filter you want to use (Import Option) Click on the Import button and your citations will be downloaded into the EndNote database. Filter is compatible with all CSA Life Sciences databases, including Biological Sciences, and Environmental Science and Pollution Management, and is the best option for the Materials Sciences databases. The Sociological Abstracts filter may be used with Social Services Abstracts and Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts. The most up to date filters may be downloaded from the EndNote website at http://www.endnote.com/support/enfilters.asp. Endnote Questions 24
