Editor's Notes
My role is subject specialist within a team of subject specialists for all our support areas. It’s a new role as of this year, based within our customer services division.
Previously I worked in a variety of roles with the Jisc regional support centre for Wales, working for a number of years supporting further education libraries, and more recently working to support universities on e-learning projects. Before that I worked as an academic librarian for several years in Oxford, London and Swansea.
I’ll begin with a brief overview of what Jisc has to offer, aimed at librarians working in university satellite campus libraries. We’ll then have some time to listen to the issues you’re facing in your work and possible areas you may like to work with us.
Has anyone come across Jisc before – in what context?
Jisc is here to serve you, and is owned by you.
In recent months Jisc has been developing some new ways of working.
One of the main innovations is in the formation of a new customer services division, spread across the whole UK, mostly home-based.
7 regions including Jisc in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Customers can engage with Jisc via three channels – account managers, customer contact centre and website/self-service online tools
6 regional/national heads supported by a group of account managers each assigned to a number of customer organisations
Community engagement/peer support
Backed by our team of subject specialists working across the UK
Suite of coherent platforms
Joined up services
In recent months we’ve been setting up our new customer services structure and the account managers have been starting to get out and meet senior staff including university library directors
We’re also meeting customers at events – our events and other conferences and meetings.
We also engage with library sector bodies including Sconul and RLUK who help to shape our priorities.
Libraries and research – covers Jisc’s digital resources and library services, scholarly communications (including Open Access), research support and research data management (RDM)
Accessibility and inclusion and legal expertise runs across all subject specialist provision
Student experience includes learning, teaching and assessment, digital literacy and related topics
Infrastructure includes e.g. Bring your Own Device, Access and identity management (eg Shibboleth)
Organisational management includes e.g. strategy development, learning spaces
All subject specialists work together as needed
Our support takes many forms and is evolving according to your requirements
My role is developing a focus on Jisc library services and digital resources, and on projects that have a library focus
I work across all our supported sectors: mostly HE and FE, and also Skills to some extent
I provide support in response to requests from the account managers
Also I respond to requests that come into our customer services helpdesk or via social media
I talk to customers at events such as library conferences and meetings like this one.
A big part of providing that support is helping to put people in touch with the right bit of Jisc to solve their problem.
R&D is carried via a co-design process
We work with partners including library bodies Sconul and RLUK, and other organisations such as NUS
Work in small groups to share your ideas
Put each idea on a post it
Post its will be captured as digital images
Report back to the group
If you would like to have the contact details for your university’s account manager, let me know and I’ll put you in touch.
If you’d like us to update your details on our customer records for your university, please supply your info
