Hi Jon - my camera only take 10 minutes of video.

A video of the first 9 minutes of the talk is available at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1581751353210348142 Brian Kelly (also a speaker at the NDAP 2008 conference).

Thanks for the comment. I gave a talk at UCISA in 2006 to 300+ senior IT managers arguing IT services departments needed to evolve. This talk not only convinced Michael Nolan, but, as I found out later, other IT directors agreed with this need for change. And an advantage with the UK HE environment is that we are small enough (nos. and distances) for us to learn from each other. Note that my previous slides are at: http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/web-focus/presentations and my blog is at: http://ukwebfocus.wordpress.com/ I'm working on the the quick elevator pitch :-)

Yes, yes, yes, ... but especially yes to the final bullet point. Thanks for this, Andy.

Agreed - and this is norhing new. We're just adding another level of redirection -something computer scientists always do. And have we thought of talking to the Web 2.0 services about OAI support?

The social aspect of Slideshare has been very useful for me - people finding my stuff, which helps me find theirs and the other resources they use. Interestingly this approach to resource discovery doesn't need metadata.

Very much agree with your final bullet point. The accessibility issue is very interesting. It shouldn't just be about WCAG 1.0 (currently being replaced) more more holistic. For example see "Accessibility 2.0: People, Policies and Processes" at http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/web-focus/papers/w4a-2007/. The paper is available on Scribd - which provides multiple formats, including MP3.

Yes, the Web is missing from this vision. Several computing science communities (hypertext, knowledge representation, etc.) tried to ignore the Web for several years, until they realised that it wouldn't go away, and they needed to enage with the Web. I think the Digital Library community needs to do this too.

"Develop aggregation services ..." What if the aggregation services are already available? Why reinvent the wheel?

What if the complexity means the service is too complex for users (information providers and end users) to use? Then need for simplicity is something we need to learn from successful
