4. In 1885 The Niagara
Parks Commission was
formed with the mission to preserve and enhance
the natural beauty of the Falls and the Niagara
River corridor for the enjoyment of visitors, while
maintaining financial self-sufficiency. From its
inception, Niagara Parks has been a completely
self-funding agency of the Provincial government,
operating at no cost to the Ontario taxpayer.
Over the years the Ontario Niagara Parks system
has grown to cover 1,720 hectares (4,250 acres)
extending along the entire length of the Niagara
River from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The properties
that we own and operate include Falls attractions
such as the world-famous Journey Behind the
Falls, restaurants, golf courses, heritage sites, a
horticultural school and a butterfly conservatory.
Environmental Stewardship &
Responsible Tourism
Niagara Parks has an enviable record of
environmental stewardship, based on its
Environmental Mission Statement – “to improve
environmental quality and sustainable development
throughout our vast parks system for the benefit of
visitors, employees and our associates.”
Niagara Parks uses the revenue raised through its
commercial operations to provide numerous FREE
activities and facilities for the enjoyment of visitors,
as well as to support significant stewardship and
preservation initiatives. We continue to educate the
public on what we do and partner with other world-
renowned cultural and tourism destinations to
promote the benefits of tourism and how it allows
us to preserve and enhance the great treasures for
which we are responsible for future generations.

5. The sound is like thunder, the sight awe-inspiring! Take a journey deep
below and behind the heart of Niagara and stand in the mist where the
mighty Canadian Horseshoe Falls tumbles from 13 stories above!
Experience the awesome spectacle of one-fifth of the world’s fresh water
crashing down to the basin below. Your Journey Behind the Falls visit will
take 30 to 45 minutes. In the spring and summer months, you’ll receive a
free souvenir biodegradable rain poncho as protection from the mist of
the Falls. Elevators descend 150 feet through bedrock to tunnels that lead
to the Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal which is one third of the
way behind the massive sheet of water, then on to the Upper and Lower
Observation Decks at the foot of the Falls.
During the winter months, the mist of the Falls freezes in spectacular ice
formations on every tree and building. Viewing the Falls in winter should
not be missed!
